However, things changed over the last 18-20 months due to few factors including significant FII (foreign institutional investors) inflows into Indian government bonds and expectations of a rate cut cycle. Devang Shah, Head Fixed Income, Axis Mutual Fund, said, “For 2025, we believe the RBI will cut rates, driving performance of bond markets. We expect a 50-basis points rate cut in the next six months. The reasons for this would be slower GDP growth, as seen in the lower Q2 GDP, with Q3 and Q4 also expected to be lower. This would prompt the RBI to change its course and start cutting rates”. Manish Banthia, CIO Fixed Income, ICICI Prudential AMC said, “The outlook for silver in 2025 is shaped by two key factors: its relationship with gold as a proxy in the precious metals space and its industrial demand dynamics”. The year 2025 presents a challenging macroeconomic environment in the United States, characterized by elevated debt levels and a substantial fiscal deficit. Gold, traditionally seen as a hedge against risk, is likely to benefit from these uncertainties, and this positive sentiment could extend to silver, given its dual role as a precious and industrial metal Banthia added. Secondly, the ongoing surge in power sector investments and electric vehicles (EVs) investments continues because of new age applications demand for silver may remain robust. Should these trends persist, silver’s industrial value will likely remain strong Banthia explained. Silver, in rupee term, delivered a CAGR return of 13.7 per cent in the last five years. The state government will commission a new mobile filtration plant to clean up tap-water supplies in the Blue Mountains that have been tainted by a plume of cancer-linked “forever chemicals”. The additional filtration is already being installed at the Cascade Water Filtration Plant in Katoomba, which supplies drinking water to nearly 50,000 residents across the area on the World Heritage List. A new mobile water filtration plant will be installed at Katoomba to remove cancer-linked PFAS contaminants from tap-water supplies. The per- and polyfluoroalkyl chemicals (PFAS) were discovered at elevated levels in Blue Mountains drinking-water supplies after the state government was pressured into testing by a Herald investigation in June. The article challenged authorities’ assumptions there were “no known PFAS hotspots in our drinking-water catchments” . After initially dismissing the Herald’s reporting, authorities quietly commissioned tests that revealed the true extent of contamination. Levels have been detected in the Cascade Water Filtration Plant that would breach Australia’s proposed new drinking-water guidelines for forever chemicals, set to be finalised by April next year. The new filtration technologies are expected to significantly reduce PFAS levels and ensure Sydney Water can comply with the new guidelines. “It is important that communities are confident in the knowledge that they have access to safe and secure water, and this new technology will help us in those efforts,” NSW Minister for Water Rose Jackson said. “We will continue to support our water authorities across the state to deliver the highest-quality drinking water to every home and business.” Jon Dee, who leads the local STOP-PFAS action group, saw the move as proof the state government knew it needed to act to make the region’s drinking water safe again. “This is a great win for the Blue Mountains community and The Sydney Morning Herald’s push to reduce our community’s exposure to forever chemicals,” he said. Jerry RaydenbowLINCOLN — The Board of State Canvassers certified nearly all of Nebraska's 2024 elections results Monday with little fanfare. The board, which consists of Gov. Jim Pillen, Secretary of State Bob Evnen, Attorney General Mike Hilgers, State Auditor Mike Foley and State Treasurer Tom Briese, unanimously certified the results of all but one local race that triggered an automatic recount. Several close races in the state Legislature and among Nebraska's congressional delegation were approved without objection. For Nebraska's first general election after implementing a new voter ID law, Deputy Secretary of State Wayne Bena said ballots were processed smoothly, and praised the state's election workers for this feat. He said there were about 345 ballots that were rejected because voters did not comply with the law, plus approximately 654 early mail-in ballots rejected because voters didn't properly fill out their information. "This election, from all metrics, went very well," Bena said. The one automatic recount was triggered in a four-candidate Dawson Public Power District race, where the second and third-place finishers were separated by 20 votes, with the race slated to award the top two finishers seats on the board. Automatic recounts are triggered when there is a margin of less than 1% in the results, based on the number of votes the winner received. The canvassing board will now meet on Dec. 10 to certify the results of this recount. There was some question about whether the board would certify the results of Nebraska's ballot initiatives, particularly a pair of measures that are slated to legalize medical marijuana. Both Hilgers and Evnen have made efforts to invalidate the measures, which both passed with roughly 70% support, alleging that petition circulators and notaries with the campaign engaged in fraud or did not follow proper protocol. Last week, Lancaster District Court Judge Susan Strong dismissed several challenges made against the measures by Evnen and former State Sen. John Kuehn. However, that case is expected to be appealed to the Nebraska Supreme Court. Regardless, both Evnen and Hilgers had said earlier that they would certify the results of the medical marijuana initiative. The issue was not mentioned during the board's meeting. The Onion's bid to buy Infowars goes before judge as Alex Jones tries stopping sale The Onion's bid to buy conspiracy theorist Alex Jones' Infowars has returned to a Texas courtroom. A federal judge in Houston is hearing arguments Monday on whether a bankruptcy auction was run properly as Jones alleges collusion and fraud. The hearing is expected to continue into Tuesday. The Onion satirical news outlet was named the winning bidder last month over a company affiliated with Jones. The auction was held to help pay nearly $1.5 billion in defamation judgments that Jones was ordered to pay families of victims of the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. Juan Soto agrees to record $765 million, 15-year contract with Mets, AP source says DALLAS (AP) — A person familiar with the deal tells The Associated Press that star outfielder Juan Soto and the New York Mets have agreed to a record $765 million, 15-year contract. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the agreement, first reported by the New York Post, was subject to a successful physical. Soto’s deal is the largest and longest in Major League Baseball history, topping Shohei Ohtani’s $700 million, 10-year contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Fernando Tatis Jr.’s $340 million, 14-year contract with San Diego. TikTok asks federal appeals court to bar enforcement of potential ban until Supreme Court review TikTok on Monday asked a federal appeals court to bar the Biden administration from enforcing a law that could lead to a ban on the popular platform until the Supreme Court reviews the case. The legal filing was made after a panel of judges on the same court sided with the government last week and ruled that the law, which requires TikTok to divest from its China-based parent company or face a ban as soon as next month, was constitutional. If the law is not overturned, both TikTok and its parent company ByteDance have said the popular app will shut down by mid-January. Members of the Hemingway Look-alike Society visited the author’s favorite bar in Havana, La Floridita, where the music immediately picked up, and tourists and locals gathered around to take photos. The visit comes as Cuba and the United States are in the midst of tense relations. Hemingway lived in Cuba from 1939 to 1960.
