Betting On The Future: Why Evolution Gaming Is A Strong Play For Long-TermDALLAS (AP) — More than 60 years after President John F. Kennedy was assassinated , conspiracy theories still swirl and any new glimpse into the fateful day of Nov. 22, 1963, in Dallas continues to fascinate . President-elect Donald Trump promised during his reelection campaign that he would declassify all of the remaining government records surrounding the assassination if he returned to office. He made a similar pledge during his first term, but ultimately bended to appeals from the CIA and FBI to keep some documents withheld. At this point, only a few thousand of the millions of governmental records related to the assassination have yet to be fully released, and those who have studied the records released so far say that even if the remaining files are declassified, the public shouldn't anticipate any earth-shattering revelations. “Anybody waiting for a smoking gun that’s going to turn this case upside down will be sorely disappointed,” said Gerald Posner, author of “Case Closed,” which concludes that assassin Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone. Friday's 61st anniversary is expected to be marked with a moment of silence at 12:30 p.m. in Dealey Plaza, where Kennedy's motorcade was passing through when he was fatally shot. And throughout this week there have been events marking the anniversary. When Air Force One carrying Kennedy and first lady Jacqueline Kennedy touched down in Dallas , they were greeted by a clear sky and enthusiastic crowds. With a reelection campaign on the horizon the next year, they had gone to Texas on political fence-mending trip. But as the motorcade was finishing its parade route downtown, shots rang out from the Texas School Book Depository building. Police arrested 24-year-old Oswald and, two days later, nightclub owner Jack Ruby fatally shot Oswald during a jail transfer. A year after the assassination, the Warren Commission, which President Lyndon B. Johnson established to investigate the assassination, concluded that Oswald acted alone and there was no evidence of a conspiracy. But that hasn't quelled a web of alternative theories over the decades. In the early 1990s, the federal government mandated that all assassination-related documents be housed in a single collection in the National Archives and Records Administration. The collection of over 5 million records was required to be opened by 2017, barring any exemptions designated by the president. Trump, who took office for his first term in 2017, had boasted that he'd allow the release of all of the remaining records but ended up holding some back because of what he called the potential harm to national security. And while files have continued to be released during President Joe Biden's administration, some still remain unseen. The documents released over the last few years offer details on the way intelligence services operated at the time, and include CIA cables and memos discussing visits by Oswald to the Soviet and Cuban embassies during a trip to Mexico City just weeks before the assassination. The former Marine had previously defected to the Soviet Union before returning home to Texas. Mark S. Zaid, a national security attorney in Washington, said what's been released so far has contributed to the understanding of the time period, giving “a great picture” of what was happening during the Cold War and the activities of the CIA. Posner estimates that there are still about 3,000 to 4,000 documents in the collection that haven’t yet been fully released. Of those documents, some are still completely redacted while others just have small redactions, like someone's Social Security number. “If you have been following it, as I have and others have, you sort of are zeroed in on the pages you think might provide some additional information for history,” Posner said. There are about 500 documents that have been completely withheld, Posner said, and those include Oswald’s and Ruby’s tax returns. Those files, the National Archives says on its website, weren't subject to the 2017 disclosure requirement. Trump's transition team hasn’t responded to questions this week about his plans when he takes office. From the start, there were those who believed there had to be more to the story than just Oswald acting alone, said Stephen Fagin, curator of the Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza, which tells the story of the assassination from the building where Oswald made his sniper's perch. “People want to make sense of this and they want to find the solution that fits the crime," said Fagin, who said that while there are lingering questions, law enforcement made “a pretty compelling case” against Oswald. Larry J. Sabato, director of the University of Virginia Center for Politics, said his interest in the assassination dates back to the event itself, when he was a child. “It just seemed so fantastical that one very disturbed individual could end up pulling off the crime of the century," Sabato said. “But the more I studied it, the more I realized that is a very possible, maybe even probable in my view, hypothesis.”FORT WORTH, Texas — When Arizona trekked to Texas last year, the Wildcats celebrated a come-from-behind victory in the Alamo Bowl to cap a historic season. The only celebratory moment in Arizona's 49-28 loss to TCU at Amon G. Carter Stadium on Saturday was UA star wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan setting the program's all-time receiving yards record. Arizona's setback officially puts the Wildcats out of bowl contention. Arizona (4-7) won't participate in the postseason for the sixth time in seven seasons. Brent Brennan is the third straight Arizona head coach to miss out on a bowl game in his first season at the helm. Arizona quarterback Noah Fifita's pass attempt to McMillan running an out route was intercepted on the first play from scrimmage on Saturday. TCU running back Trent Battle scored a 4-yard rushing touchdown to give the Horned Frogs a 7-0 lead; he scored again on TCU's opening drive of the second half. (AP Photo/LM Otero) TCU quarterback Josh Hoover, the Big 12's leading passer, was pressured by UA defensive end Lance Keneley and threw an interception on the Horned Frogs' second drive. Arizona free safety Jack Luttrell intercepted the pass for his third pick of the season, which tied sophomore Genesis Smith for a team-high this season. Despite the first-quarter interception, the Wildcats failed to reach TCU territory on the first three drives and fell behind 14-0. TCU running back Trent Battle (17) runs for a touchdown past Arizona defensive back Johno Price (21) during the first half of an NCAA college football game Saturday, Nov. 23, 2024, in Fort Worth, Texas. (AP Photo/LM Otero) Arizona clawed its way back to a one-possession deficit after Fifita connected with tight end Sam Olson, who ran a seam route, for a 51-yard gain to the red zone. UA redshirt sophomore wide receiver Chris Hunter completed the drive with a 17-yard touchdown catch, stretching out his body and tapping his toes to stay in bounds. Since becoming a starter last month, Hunter has emerged as the Wildcats second-best pass-catcher behind McMillan. Arizona's dime defense used a similar tactic it used last week against Houston, showing blitz with multiple defensive backs in the box and two defensive linemen in a two-point stance. The Wildcats either pressured Hoover or dropped back in coverage against TCU's high-powered passing attack. Arizona forced back-to-back three-and-out possessions, but failed to convert TCU's empty possessions into touchdowns. Arizona kicker Tyler Loop made a 53-yard and 43-yard field goal and trimmed the deficit 14-13. With a chance for more momentum just before halftime, TCU converted on three third-down plays, including a third-and-18 and third-and-25. The Horned Frogs also had an intentional grounding that knocked them out of field goal range, but Hoover's 24-yard pass to wide receiver JP Richardson set up TCU receiver-converted-running back Savion Williams for a 20-yard touchdown run to take a 21-13 lead. Arizona wide receiver Chris Hunter (16) takes a hand off from quarterback Noah Fifita (11) during the first half of an NCAA college football game against TCU, Saturday, Nov. 23, 2024, in Fort Worth, Texas. (AP Photo/LM Otero) Williams' touchdown was the first of a five-touchdown streak for TCU. Arizona's only offensive touchdown of the second half was Hunter's goal-line catch in the back of the end zone. Hunter had eight catches for 45 yards. Third-year defensive end Sterling Lane II returned a fumble 68 yards with a minute left. McMillan's 8-yard catch with just under 10 minutes left in the game officially put him as Arizona's all-time leading receiver with 3,335 yards. McMillan passed current UA wide receivers coach Bobby Wade for the record. Arizona will now face red-hot in-state rival Arizona State for the Territorial Cup. The Wildcats have won the last two Territorial Cups. Extra points: Contact Justin Spears, the Star's Arizona football beat reporter, at jspears@tucson.com . Sports ReporterA new year means new laws for Texans, and several will go into effect starting Jan. 1. Some of these laws will affect drivers and internet users, while others will affect court operations and school funding. Changes to the laws were passed during the 88th Texas Legislature and were signed by Gov. Greg Abbott. Here’s an outline of those new state laws and how they will affect Texans in 2025. Safety inspections will no longer be required for Texans to register a vehicle, with the exception of commercial ones, according to The Texas Department of Public Safety. All non-commercial vehicles will, however, be required to pay a $7.50 inspection program replacement charge when registering with the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles. Cars that have not been registered in Texas or another state will have to pay a $16.75 initial inspection program replacement charge to cover two years. A safety examination is still necessary for commercial vehicles. There won’t be any replacement costs for such cars. The cost of registration will not change, and a non-commercial vehicle must still undergo an emissions test if it is registered in a county where it is mandated. The following counties require emissions tests: Brazoria, Collin, Dallas, Denton, El Paso, Ellis, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris, Johnson, Kaufman, Montgomery, Parker, Rockwall, Tarrant, Travis and Williamson. Emissions tests will be required in Bexar County starting in 2026. Texans will be able to decide if a company is allowed to collect and process their personal data in 2025, under the updated Texas Data Privacy and Security Act. House Bill 4 already let Texans authorize someone else or technology to opt out of having a company process their personal information. This new safeguard starting on Jan. 1 enables Texans to use browser settings, extensions and device functionalities to opt out of data sales, targeted advertising and profiling based on personal data. Opting out must be the user’s choice rather than a default setting, according to the law, and that must be made clear by companies. Three new courts will be established in Texas counties, as outlined in House Bill 3474. Denton County will be home to the 477th judicial district court, and cases in Edwards, Gillespie and Kimball counties will be heard by the new 499th judicial court. Kendall County will be home to the 498th judicial district court. Under Senate Bill 2, more money will be available to school districts if they run out of their budgets after regular state funding and local taxes are calculated in 2025. Districts will be able to apply for extra funds in an effort to make up for the loss of tax revenues due to limitations on tax increases for elderly and disabled homeowners. The Texas Education Agency must also publish the highest compressed rate for every school district starting in January. The Texas Code of Criminal Procedure will undergo revisions that will provide clarity for the public and legal experts. The modifications will make legal statutes easier to understand without affecting their structure or readability. These changes aim to bring the state’s legal system up to date.
Martin St. Louis Torches the Officials Repeats Same Fiery Answer to Five Questions in One-Minute PresserRob Pelinka executed a major move today, as he sent D'Angelo Russell and Maxwell Lewis, along with three second-round picks, to the Brooklyn Nets , in exchange for Dorian Finney-Smith and Shake Milton. With the deal now being official, Pelinka put out a statement thanking Russell and Lewis, along with sharing optimism and excitement for the new players coming in. “We want to thank D’Angelo for his second stint with us, where we celebrated some great moments and accomplishments on the court together. We want to wish him and Maxwell Lewis well in their future endeavors with the Brooklyn Nets." "With this trade, we are thrilled to add the physicality, toughness, and elite shooting that Dorian Finney-Smith will bring to our core. We also greatly value the playmaking of Shake Milton. We are excited for our fans to get both of these players out on the court.” Dorian Finney-Smith is a major get for the Lakers , as he adds great size, defense, and three-point shooting to the Lakers, three things that the team has struggled without this season. For the season, Finney-Smith is averaging 10.4 points, 4.6 rebounds, 1.6 assists, 1.6 steals, and 0.9 blocks, while shooting 45.9% from the field, 43.5% from deep (a career-high), and 62.5% from the free-throw line. As for Shake Milton, he has also played well in the limited minutes he has gotten this season, averaging 18.2 minutes, 7.4 points, 2.4 assists, 1.9 rebounds, and 0.6 steals per game, while shooting 46.5% from the field, 38.9% from deep, and 75.8% from the free-throw line. His strong three-point shooting is also set to give the Lakers a massive boost from range. The Lakers desperately needed a move like this, that gives them everything they're looking for right now. On top of that, with the way he had been playing, moving D'Angelo Russell had become a bit of a priority. His performances had been poor, and with his expiring contract, they risked losing him for no return whatsoever. The Lakers Must Make More Moves While Rob Pelinka did a good job with this deal, he must be active. As his former client and Los Angeles Lakers legend Kobe Bryant once said, 'Job's not finished'. Pelinka must go out and get more reinforcements if he is serious about helping the team achieve contender status. One of the crucial things to note about this deal is the fact that the Lakers didn't give up any of their first-round picks. They currently have their 2026, 2028, 2029, and 2030 first-round picks, which they can use to land another strong player and help improve the team going forward. It was reported this week that Pelinka wants to bring in young players who not only contribute at a high level right now but can be future stalwarts for JJ Redick when the team eventually moves on from LeBron James . Perhaps this is why the team refuses to include Austin Reaves in a potential deal for Zach LaVine . We had suggested a monster trade for the Lakers to land De'Aaron Fox just a few days ago. But with the departure of Russell, who was on a decent $18.7 million salary, that deal will be difficult to pull off. Regardless, expect the Lakers to be active on the trade front in the coming weeks, as we fast approach the February 6th deadline. A harsh national spotlight has fallen swiftly upon her. "They may try to misgender me, they may try to say the wrong name, they will do what we can predictably assume they might do," she told the TransLash podcast last month ahead of her resounding election victory on November 5. "They are going to do that to get a rise out of me and my job will be to not give them the response they want," the Democrat from Delaware explained. Ahead of her arrival in the House of Representatives on January 3, McBride was targeted by a resolution this week from a right-wing Republican colleague that would ban transgender women from women's toilets in the Capitol. "Just because a Congressman wants to wear a mini skirt doesn’t mean he can come into a women’s bathroom," South Carolina firebrand Nancy Mace wrote on social media as she led a highly personal campaign against McBride. House Speaker Mike Johnson, after initially seeking to buy time to debate the issue, came out in support of a ban, saying that all single-sex facilities would be "reserved for individuals of that biological sex." McBride -- who wears knee-length dresses, not miniskirts -- issued a statement saying that she said would respect the rules "even if I disagree with them." "I'm not here to fight about bathrooms," said the politician and activist, who transitioned as a 21-year-old and told her parents on Christmas Day 2011. Donald Trump repeatedly raised transgender issues in the closing stages of his presidential campaign, with aides noting how questions around trans identity struck a nerve with swing voters. Two of the biggest issues -- at the heart of ongoing "culture wars" between conservatives and progressives -- are whether transgender women should be allowed in women's toilets and be admitted in women's sport. Mocking transgender athletes and "woke ideology," Trump promised to get "transgender insanity the hell out of our schools, and we will keep men out of women’s sports." McBride has long been an advocate for trans rights and she helped campaign for a law banning gender discrimination in her home state of Delaware, during which she was publicly called a "freak" and the "devil incarnate". "Listening to that was demeaning and dehumanizing for my child," her mother Sally told The Washington Post in a 2018 profile. "I still have a hard time coping with that." Undeterred, McBride rode the blows and was elected as the first US transgender state senator in 2020. She has been open about her mental health struggles growing up as a boy named Tim and the personal tragedy that has marked her life since, writing a memoir called "Tomorrow Will Be Different" in 2018. "I remember as a child praying in my bed at night that I would wake up the next day and be a girl," she told a TED talk in 2016. She first gathered major public attention with an open letter while a student leader at American University in Washington that announced her transition. She went on to encounter President Joe Biden and his family, also Delaware natives, when she became active in grassroots politics there. After interning at the White House under President Barack Obama, she secured an invitation to speak at the 2016 Democratic Party convention. The White House was also the scene of her first encounter with her late husband, Andrew Cray, a transgender man and LGTBQ+ activist. They married two years later shortly before Cray died from cancer. Knowing the attention she is destined for in the US Congress, she says her aim is to be an effective congresswoman focused on everyday voter priorities such as housing and inflation. But she knows she will be constantly pushed to be a spokeswoman -- and defender -- of the trans community. "I can't do right by the trans community if I'm not being the best member of Congress that I can be for Delaware," she told TransLash. "It's the only way that people will see that trans people can be good doctors, can be good lawyers, good educators, good members of Congress. I can't be there to put out a press release and tweet every time someone says something." adp/bgs
