Sure, you could build a box fort on top of your kitchen table, but a standing desk and comfortable office chair don’t have to be excessive splurges. Investing in good ergonomic equipment can be affordable—at least, it can during Black Friday. Deals in these categories don’t always fly as fast and furious, but a solid handful are worth looking at. We’ve pulled together our list based on user reviews, technical specs, price trends over the year, and feedback from the PCWorld staff. If none of these suit you, keep checking back. More bargains could emerge closer to the big date, which this year is November 29. Black Friday 2024 deals on office chairs It may come as a surprise, but Staples makes some very popular desk chairs—and they’re all down to their lowest prices for Black Friday. Its Hyken model is a fan favorite on Reddit, with the Dexley as an alternative if you need a wider variant. Meanwhile, if you need more comfort, the FlexiSpot A5 offers adjustable support comparable to far more expensive chairs. And speaking of luxe, the Steelcase Leap is on rare discount right now. If you need its level of support and adjustability, you’ll save $300 during Black Friday. Not willing to go that high? Hon’s Ignition chair is on sale through Costco. (Non-members are eligible for the deal but must pay a 5 percent surcharge.) Black Friday 2024 deals on standing desks Flexispot is a popular brand on Amazon, and for good reason—their standing desks start at much lower prices than competitors. While a single-motor model, the EN2 offers a roomy tabletop and includes a power surge protector that clamps to the desk. No need to dangle cables from the floor to any accessories you’re charging. Interested in having more say over the components of your standing desk? Monoprice’s reliable dual-motor frame can be had for under $200 right now. You’ll have to DIY your own tabletop (Reddit users like buying and countertops to pair with their standing desk frames), but you’ll generally end up with a nicer, sturdier desk for less. Standing desks and office chairs FAQ A dual motor and programmable controls make for a smoother experience overall. With this motor type, the table won’t wobble as much when going up and down. The frames used for dual-motor desks usually are sturdier, too. Meanwhile, having programmable controls lets you easily switch between different specific height positions. It’s a quality-of-life improvement that influences how much you like having a standing desk—manually overseeing the height adjustments can become tedious and even a little annoying over the long haul. This question is a little tricky to answer, but there are two main things to consider. First, you want enough back support to avoid hunching, while also feeling relaxed while sitting. You also want to avoid pressure on your lower back while in the chair. Office chairs designed for long sitting will have backs and seats shaped to address these issues, in contrast to the flatter surfaces of kitchen and casual desk chairs. Arm rests, head supports, and mesh fabric can also contribute to comfort, depending on your size and how warm you run. When possible, try out these features on a chair a friend owns or on display in a store first, in order to see if you need them. The mesh is particularly good for those who sweat easily. Wheeled legs are also good for easily getting in and out of the chair. You can often upgrade the casters, as , for an even smoother experience. Be aware that for hard floors, you may need a rug to protect from scratches, and for deep-carpeted floor, you might need a mat for unhindered rolling. For the deals chosen by PCWorld, both the quality of the product and the deal are considered. First and foremost, the desk or chair should be well-regarded. Prices should also be among the lowest we’ve seen, especially within context of a product’s historical cost. If you’re weighing a deal on your own, be aware that many standing desks are rebranded models with slight variations, and so too for cheaper desk chairs. Read the product reviews, and when available, also look at the AI summaries of user reviews—skip anything with a known flaw or high return rates. Ideally, a desk or chair should have both independent reviews and high marks from users. But for the more tech-savvy among us, the journey home could also mean we'll be called on to provide a backlog of tech support to parents, grandparents and other family members. And with generative AI being used to supercharge some major cyber scams this year, it's also a good time to teach and not just fix. Here are some tips on how to manage your tech encounters this holiday season: Set devices up for automatic updates Whether it's Windows, macOS, iOS or Android, simply keeping your operating system and apps up-to-date will help protect your family's computers and devices against a surprising number of security threats, such as malware, viruses and exploits. People are also reading... Most operating systems, especially those for mobile devices and their app stores, typically have auto-updates turned on by default. Be sure to double-check the device to make sure it has enough storage space to carry out the update. (More on this below.) Keeping apps updated may also reduce the number of "Why isn't this app working?" type of questions from your relatives. Freeing up storage space Chances are someone in your family is going to have a completely full mobile device. So full, in fact, that they can no longer update their phone or tablet without having to purge something first. There are many approaches to freeing up space. Here are a few you can easily take without having to triage data or apps. What's my password? According to some admittedly unscientific studies, the average person has hundreds of passwords. That's a lot to remember. So as you help your relatives reset some of theirs, you may be tempted to recycle some to keep things simple for them. But that's one of the bad password habits that cybersecurity experts warn against. Instead, try introducing your forgetful family member to a password manager. They're useful tools for simplifying and keeping track of logins. And if you want to impress a more tech-savvy cousin or auntie, you could suggest switching to a more secure digital authentication method: passkeys. KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Nico Iamaleava threw for 209 yards and four touchdowns to lead No. 10 Tennessee to a 56-0 victory over UTEP on Saturday. The Volunteers (9-2) overcame a sluggish start to roll up the impressive win. Both teams were scoreless in the first quarter, but Tennessee found its rhythm. Grad student receiver Bru McCoy, who hadn't caught a touchdown pass this season, had two. Peyton Lewis also ran for two scores. Tennessee's defensive line, which had no sacks in last week's loss to Georgia, had three against the Miners. UTEP (2-9) struggled with two missed field goals and three turnovers. Tennessee's offense came alive with 28 points in the second quarter. In the final four drives of the quarter, Iamaleava completed 11 of 12 passes for 146 yards and touchdowns to Squirrel White, Ethan Davis and McCoy. UTEP was the dominant team in the first quarter. Tennessee managed just 37 offensive yards and, thanks to an interception near the end zone and a missed field goal by the Miners, both teams were scoreless after 15 minutes. POLL IMPLICATIONS Tennessee’s convincing victory, coupled with losses by Mississippi and Indiana, should put the Volunteers in a good position when the next College Football Playoff poll is released. The Vols were ranked No. 11 going into this week’s games. THE TAKEAWAY UTEP: The Miners will head into a very winnable game against New Mexico State having won two of their last five games. First-year coach Scotty Walden will try to build on that success in the offseason to help enhance his roster. Tennessee: Even a lopsided win won’t carry much weight where it means the most — in the College Football Playoff rankings. The Vols will have to rely on a convincing win against Vanderbilt next week, a team that has shown a lot of improvement this season, to help their standing for those coveted spots. UP NEXT UTEP: The Miners will finish their season at New Mexico State Saturday. Tennessee: The Vols will finish their regular season at Vanderbilt next Saturday. SMITHFIELD, R.I. (AP) — Malik Grant rushed for 204 yards and three touchdowns and Rhode Island beat Bryant 35-21 on Saturday to capture its first league title in 39 years. Rhode Island (10-2, 7-1 Coastal Athletic Association) secured the program's seventh title, with each of the previous six coming in the Yankee Conference. The Rams tied a program record for total wins in a season with 10, first set in 1984 and matched in 1985. Hunter Helms threw for 209 yards with one touchdown and one interception for Rhode Island. Grant also added his first touchdown reception of the season. Grant rushed for 47 yards on the first snap of the second half. He ran for 56 yards on the drive that ended with his 4-yard touchdown catch for a 20-14 lead. An interception by Braden Price on the ensuing Bryant possession set up another Grant rushing touchdown. Bryant scored in the fourth quarter to make it a one-score game, but a 15-play, 72-yard drive ended with a 3-yard touchdown run by Grant. Grant's 13 rushing touchdowns are tied for Rhode Island's single-season record set last season by Ja’Den McKenzie. Brennan Myer threw for 189 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions for Bryant (2-10, 0-8). Dylan Kedzior rushed for 80 yards and a touchdown, and Landon Ruggieri caught eight passes for 105 yards and a score. Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season. AP college football: https://apnews.com/hub/ap-top-25-college-football-poll and https://apnews.com/hub/college-footballFollowing the election of Donald Trump and his to make swingeing cuts to the federal government, civil servants are said to be quitting in droves. Government insiders said employees were already resigning and looking for work in the private sector amid concern that their roles will be “politicised” under Mr Trump’s second administration. Others fear they will be sacked. Mr Trump has drawn up unprecedented plans to , promising to bring back “Schedule F” – a controversial order he introduced at the end of his first term, which would have made it easier to remove civil servants who disobey him. The move is one measure he has proposed to take on the Washington “swamp”, which he says blocked many of his policy plans between 2017 and 2021. “Either the deep state destroys America, or we destroy the deep state,” the president-elect told supporters at his first rally of the 2024 election cycle. “The thugs and criminals who are corrupting our justice system will be defeated, discredited and totally disgraced.” , Mr Trump has appointed the billionaire Mr Musk and Vivek Ramaswasmy, an entrepreneur and former Republican primary contender, to run a Department of Government Efficiency. Mr Musk has said he intends to “delete” around 75 per cent of federal agencies, and has railed against bodies he says “serve no purpose apart from the aggrandisement of bureaucrats” with “fake jobs”. He has also called for an in the federal government. His pseudo-agency, “DOGE”, will recommend cuts to be enacted by Mr Trump by executive order. In a recent op-ed for the Wall Street Journal, Mr Musk and Mr Ramaswamy said they plan to reduce the size of the government without passing any new legislation. Among so-called swamp-dwellers, the reaction has been one of blind panic. Jaqueline Simon, the policy director of the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE), said Mr Trump’s victory and his appointment of Mr Musk meant many of the union’s members were planning to desert their posts. “Schedule F would involve reclassifying positions in the civil service and essentially turning them into political appointments,” she said. “People would be fired or hired at will, they could be fired for any reason or no reason, including [their] politics and questions about an individual’s loyalty to Donald Trump.” “I’ve heard people say that if they are ‘Schedule F-d’, they are retiring.” The AFGE was one of the most prolific complainants in judicial reviews against Mr Trump during his first term, challenging his decision to alter collective bargaining clauses in federal workers’ contracts. The organisation is thought to be planning more legal challenges in Mr Trump’s second term, when he will have control of both branches of Congress and a conservative majority on the Supreme Court bench. Meanwhile, Randy Erwin, president of the National Federation of Federal Employees (NFFE), said he and his colleagues were when asked about Mr Musk and Mr Ramaswamy’s plans. The federal government employs almost three million people, many of whom work in Washington DC. The size of the government peaked during the Second World War, then fell sharply in the 1950s before trending upwards into the mid-1990s. It has since declined marginally. The federal debt, however, has continued to rise more sharply than ever before, spurred by stimulus packages and economic life support programmes during the Covid-19 pandemic. It now stands at more than $35 trillion, or $104,000 per person. Mr Trump’s election could see the sharpest reduction in the civil service headcount and spending in decades. But of those who stay, many are planning to fight. “Trump-prepping” is now widespread among government employees, with some citing concerns about working on some of his more controversial policies, including the mass deportation of illegal migrants. The American Civil Liberties Union, a civil rights nonprofit that filed more than 400 challenges to Mr Trump’s policies during his first term, has announced plans to “fight back” against his second administration. Anthony Romero, the organisation’s president, said on the day after the election that it would focus on the four policy areas of , anti-LGBTQ discrimination, abortion rights and legal protections for whistleblowers. The outgoing Biden administration is also trying to , including by passing legislation that would reduce the effectiveness of a second Schedule F if it is passed after Mr Trump’s inauguration. It has also attempted to spend the remainder of a budget allocated to military aid for Ukraine, and to bake in federal grant programmes for green energy and semiconductors that form part of Mr Biden’s “Bidenomics” industrial policy. Jesus Soriano, a federal government scientist at the US National Science Foundation, told The Telegraph he was concerned that Mr Musk would recommend the closure of some research agencies and cut grant funding. Mr Musk’s DOGE has taken to his social media platform, X, to criticise the US government’s decision to fund some research. The agency claimed the government had handed out grants for “$100,000 to study if tequila or gin makes sunfish more aggressive” and “nearly $1 million to study if cocaine makes Japanese quail more sexually promiscuous”. It’s not clear if this was genuinely the case. However, Mr Soriano said a major reduction in federal research funding could see the US slip behind competitors in , semiconductors and other technologies. “The effects will be progressive, when it comes to the lack of development that occurs when the scientific enterprise is disrupted,” he said. “In the long term, it will be difficult to redress.” He added that many of his colleagues are “starting to look for jobs” or “preparing Plan Bs” because of . “There is self censure and fear, so employees are keeping their opinions to themselves, but I do know that many are planning and taking steps to leave through retirement or attrition, which represents a very expensive brain drain,” he said. “Although no reform has been enacted, just the public comments alone are already having an effect.” When Mr Trump takes office on Jan 20, are planning to launch a war on the state with immediate effect. Allies at the America First Policy Institute and Heritage Foundation have spent years preparing hundreds of executive orders to be signed on his first day in the White House – many of which are designed to reform the government. Mr Trump’s plans for revenge on the administrative state are already in motion. But who will win round two?
