Former MP Prof. Charitha Herath has weighed in on recent comments made by Industries and Entrepreneurship Development Minister Sunil Handunneththi, who accused public sector officials of obstructing the Government’s efforts by clinging to outdated systems. Herath called for a more constructive approach, emphasising the need for systemic reform rather than blaming public officials. Minister Handunneththi, speaking at a program held in Colombo recently, expressed frustration over the challenges faced in implementing Government policies, alleging that some public officials continue to operate within a “corrupt old system.” He claimed this resistance hindered efforts to provide relief to the people, protect their rights, and support local industries. Handunneththi further noted that his current struggle lies with the Ministry of Finance, particularly over issues like tax policies, which he said fail to align with the new Government’s vision. In response, Herath took to social media platform ‘X’ to defend the role of public officials. “It is not correct to view public officials as adversaries of the Government. Their role is to operate within the framework of the laws, regulations, and policies in place,” Herath said. Herath clarified that when officials highlight contradictions between the Government’s directives and existing laws or policies, they are not obstructing but pointing out administrative constraints. An Idaho beauty salon owner said she is seeing customers “dropping like flies” after calling supporters of President-elect Donald Trump “racist, homophobic, and misogynistic.” Tiffney Prickett of Voiage Salon in Coeur d’Alene said she is “suffering the consequences of my own action” in a TikTok video posted days after the November election, saying that one of her longtime clients demanded a refund after she went on an anti-Trump tirade: It is the right thing to do. Undergraduate occupational and environmental health and safety programs at Utah State University, Brigham Young University, the University of Utah and Weber State University have formed a first-of-its-kind partnership to collectively promote their degrees and career opportunities. The partnership’s effort has included hosting informational sessions for prospective students featuring all four universities, a unified marketing campaign and collaborative management. The occupational and environmental health and safety field focuses on protecting the health, safety and well-being of workers by identifying, assessing and managing workplace and environmental risks. From 2018-2022, the most recent five-year data available from the U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics, 257 people died in occupational fatalities in Utah and 161,400 people suffered workplace injuries Reducing both numbers by producing well-trained graduates is a core objective of all four of the partner occupational and environmental health and safety programs. Academic advisor for USU’s Public Health program , Carl Farley, said the Occupational and Environmental Health field has incredibly high job placement, and starting salaries for bachelor’s-level professionals range from $68,000 to $100,000. Farley said they could easily double the number of program graduates and still have 100% job placement, but attracting students has always been a challenge. “Unfortunately, it’s the best kept secret. And we’re trying to change that,” Farley said. He said most of their students find out about the program by word of mouth, which is how USU senior Ethan Fullmer found the program. Fullmer is a pre-dental student from Hyde Park. He said he started as a human biology major, which is common for pre-medical students, but a student in the public health program recommended it to him. “I talked to Farley, and it seemed like a degree with lots of career options, smaller class sizes and opportunities to get my hands dirty outside of the classroom,” Fullmer said. He said he likes that the program is so hands on, and every student has to do an internship, so they get real world experience. The field encompasses a range of disciplines, such as industrial hygiene, ergonomics, occupational health psychology, occupational medicine, occupational health nursing, occupational safety and mining safety. “We’ve had graduates work in every field from oil and gas to hospitals and technology,” said program director Scott Bernhardt. “We’ve had students work at Intel, Amazon, Tesla, you name it.” Program lecturer John Flores said for incoming freshmen interested in STEM, public health is a good place to start. “If they decide they don’t like it, the foundation they will have from entry level classes will meet any other science requirements,” Flores said. Tori Joy, who is leading the partnership as the occupational and environmental health and safety pathways coordinator at Weber State, said students don’t often learn about these types of jobs in high school or grade school. She said they want students to learn about the field, get excited about it and enroll in one of these programs, no matter which university they choose to go to. “The enthusiastic involvement of all four undergraduate programs — which ostensibly compete against one another — sends a rare and powerful message,” Joy said. “It speaks to the importance of what we’re doing and our shared commitment to both students and workers. It’s a key component of cultural heritage: How food is prepared, served, and shared is oftentimes communal and ritualistic. Food tells us stories — be they personal, historical, or social. And food culture is a form of art. The Art of Dining: Food Culture in the Islamic World , currently on view at the Detroit Institute of Arts, transforms meals into narrative experiences, showing how food connects people not only to their roots, but also to each another. The exhibition showcases almost 230 pieces, spanning centuries and ranging from cooking vessels to paintings, from 30 public and private collections across the world. Our introduction to this realm comes initially from a map of the Southwest Asia and North Africa (SWANA) region, which greets the visitor as they enter the show. Several cities are highlighted on this map: Istanbul, Cairo, Mecca, Baghdad, Isfahan, and Delhi. The captions explain that these sites have been significant for trade, artistic production, and pilgrimage. They were also both culturally and historically important for Islam, the exhibition posits, and they hold a special place for the food culture that was nurtured in historically Muslim-majority regions of the world. What makes this show truly commendable is its expansive perspective on food. The works on view emphasize everything associated with the craft of dining. Steel fruit sculptures (pear, quince, melon) made for the processions commemorating the martyrdom of Al-Ḥusayn ibn ʿAlī (626–80), a grandson of the Prophet Muhammad and the third Shia imam , are on display. The exhibit also features different types of spice dishes, tin-glazed plates with peacock feather patterns, glazed porcelain bowls, copper alloy cauldrons, flasks, and drinking vessels. It draws our attention to the processes of preparation, presentation, and enjoyment associated with food culture, such as the hospitality of hand washing, demonstrated via an ewer from Iran or Iraq circa the 1200s; a basin from Egypt dating from the 1300s; and even a description of dining etiquette from the Sunni polyhistor and mujaddid (or “one who brings renewal to the religion”) Al-Ghazali (1058–1111). In one large room, a table invites us to a digitally created sufra (floor spread) meal where adapted historical dishes, prepared by chef Najmieh Batmanglij , are projected at the center of each plate. There is even a cooking display with multiple televisions where you can watch the preparation of different dishes live on a screen. Cookbooks, handbooks for health, and a glimpse into the kitchens and pantries that supported food culture throughout the Islamic cultures emphasized in the show are dispersed throughout the galleries. Stories around food further narrate the visitor’s journey. Medieval illuminated manuscripts draw attention to images of picnics; depictions of scenes known as maqama (meaning “assembly” in Arabic) that would have been read out loud at social gatherings; and banquet scenes from a copy of the Shahnama (Book of Kings) of Firdawsi. Together, these works foreground the importance of hospitality in class and political power. They illustrate how culinary traditions and communal meals serve as vital expressions of identity and social cohesion within various cultural and class contexts. These books are placed alongside musical instruments — a kamancha made from fish skin from the 1800s, the taus (meaning “peacock” in Persian) from 19th-century India, the oud of the Greek Maol (Emmanuel Venios) — calling to mind the practices of entertainment present in these cities and in Islamic courts. At one point, the viewer is also invited to join the table by sharing on circular, blank white pages “how food connected you to people, places, and memories.” The exhibition ends with a contemporary multimedia installation by Iraqi-born artist Sadik Kwaish Alfraji titled “A Thread of Light Between My Mother’s Fingers and Heaven.” This captivatingly layered piece is influenced by the artist’s memories of his mother and the bread she baked as they gathered as a family around their table in Baghdad. The black and white sketched animations reflect how memories and food intertwine to create a tapestry of shared experiences, evoking nostalgia and a profound sense of identity that transcends time and place. Though not all the objects on display serve religious functions, the show paints a well-rounded picture of food culture in Islam. The Art of Dining was originally organized and displayed by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. For the DIA iteration, the curators made modifications in response to feedback that called for a more multicultural perspective, as opposed to one that overly homogenizes what’s referred to here as the Islamic world. This approach is evident as the exhibition acknowledges how the everyday lives of different ethnoreligious cultures in these regions were informed by different or varying practices. While looking at food cultures through the lens of intercultural connection added complexity that was presumably lacking in the LACMA version, the DIA’s presentation would have been made stronger by recognizing the non-Islamic peoples who lived in these cities and across the SWANA region. Although these communities — for example, Greek, Chaldean, and Armenian — may not have practiced the Islamic faith, their customs around food were influenced by these same practices. Though a section of the exhibit acknowledges shared cultures in tableware from this region, identifying Chinese porcelain, Ottoman ceramics, and Italian pottery as points of connection, there are many other examples of commonalities around food that could have helped represent links between communities across these geographies. The city of Istanbul — with its far-reaching Byzantine, Cilician Armenian, Jewish, and Parthian presence — is one such example where multiple influences collectively shaped the cultural identity of its premodern history. Using the term “Islamicate,” coined by historian Marshall Hodgson, could have alluded to the importance of Islam as a cultural force that influenced non-Muslims in the region, while also acknowledging their presence and contribution to the development of a sociopolitical and economic cosmos there. Doing so would have also reinforced the exhibit’s already strong foundation by showcasing Islamicate civilization as an integral component of world history and Islam’s influence upon it — especially through the exquisite ways in which it highlighted the history of food culture as a unifying element within this narrative. Is a liberal arts degree useless if you want to succeed in life? Not at all.Jon M. Chu counted himself a fan of “ Wicked ” long before he was hired to direct the big-budget movie adaptation of the popular Broadway musical. So it was a question of where, not if, he should pay homage to Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth, who originated the stage roles of Elphaba and Glinda, in the two-part film, the first of which landed in theaters on Nov. 22. After much deliberation among Oz’s powers that be, it was decided they would appear in the movie as the stars of Wizomania, an expanded show within the show that plays out when Elphaba ( Cynthia Erivo ) and Glinda ( Ariana Grande ) visit the Emerald City during the song “One Short Day.” “I told them, ‘I want you to experience for the first time what you gave us.’ I saw Idina and Kristin as they were workshopping the show at the Curran Theatre [in 2003]. I’ll never forget being blown away by their performances,” Chu recalls, lounging on the couch at Manhattan’s Bowery Hotel in an appropriately green sweater. “When they were on set, I think reality hit them and it was very full circle for them.” “Wicked,” which introduced such classics as “Defying Gravity,” “Popular” and “For Good” into the Broadway pantheon, recounts everything that happens before Dorothy lands in Oz and saunters down that iconic Yellow Brick Road. The story takes place before, during and after “The Wizard of Oz” and charts the unlikely friendship of the green-skinned Elphaba (later known as the Wicked Witch of the West) and the perky, pink-loving Glinda (eventually dubbed Glinda the Good). “Part One” chronicles their time together at Shiz University, where they are forced to be roommates and eventually become besties. The second movie, which debuts on Nov. 21, 2025, picks up after Elphaba is fully in control of her powers and has been declared an enemy of the state by the Wizard (Jeff Goldblum) and Madame Morrible (Michelle Yeoh). As “Wicked: Part One” opens on the big screen, Chu indulged Variety in a spoiler-filled chat about Menzel and Chenoweth’s cameos, sacred lines that were (and weren’t) cut from the script... and whether we’ll see more of Dorothy in “Part Two.” “ Wicked” was originally being developed as one movie. What did those earlier versions look like? When I walked in, everyone was already in high-octane mode of debating: Do we need to do this in two movies? Other scripts that were trying to fit it into one movie were stripping many songs and changing the story in ways that didn’t quite make logical, emotional sense. You can get away with that on stage, but movie audiences are tougher. As we picked apart every script, I would ask certain questions that opened a lot of discussion. It became inevitable that we had to commit to two movies. I imagine it didn’t take convincing to get Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel in the movie. But how did you find the right moment to include them? They weren’t just going to come to do whatever . Our inner circle thought of all sorts of things to present to them. Does Kristin play Glinda’s mom? Are they one of the people who says “The Wizard will see you now”? It always felt underwhelming. We had to give them something big. We had this section in “Wizomania” that needed backstory that we didn’t need in the show: What is the Grimmerie? And an understanding of how the Wizard came to Oz. I was like, ‘What if we do this section as a play? It was supposed to be an amusement park ride like “It’s a Small World,” which was a fun concept. But if it’s a show, then it’s sort of meta. Idina and Kristin play the two most famous actors in Oz. They get to be glamorous and people get to applaud them. Stephen Schwartz immediately knew what to do and added Idina’s Elphaba war cry and interplay of pushing each other out of the way. It’s fun playing off the lore of two mega stars in the show . Some quotable lines and lyrics, like “we’ll be late for Wizomania,” were cut. Were those difficult decisions given how intimately fans know the show? When you don’t have a live audience to play off, some of the comedy doesn’t quite work. I remember when Ari read that we didn’t have the line “the Wizard will see you now!” There was a reason for it; they were more progressed in the geography. In rehearsals, we didn’t have it and every time that moment would happen, they would sing it anyway. Ari was like, “I promise you, we have to have it.” So I was like, “OK, let me figure it out. We built it in so there are two entrances now, but it was worth it.” There were debates all the time. In the beginning, when Glinda says “It’s good to see me, isn’t it?,” in the show she says, “No need to answer. That’s rhetorical.” But in the movie when she said the line, the joke didn’t land. Not because of the way she performed it. But because there’s no audience to give the feedback for it. We put fake Ozian reactions, but it was too meta, too early. That was a scary one to cut because it’s like a Bible line. Why did you include a “The Wizard of Oz” homage with Dorothy, the Tin Man, Scarecrow and Cowardly Lion walking down the Yellow Brick Road? “The Wizard of Oz” is potentially a dream. It’s a world where there are no real stakes. Knowing that Elphaba and Glinda live in a world of real stakes, we had to reestablish with the audience that this was real. So we dropped everyone into the crime scene, maybe the most famous crime scene ever in cinema and literature, of the iconic hat in the puddle. We see the full landscape of Oz. It’s this living, breathing place with real cultures, so we immediately establish this is not a dream world. Seeing those four characters also triggers something in your mind; you connect those characters with this place. And we will revisit those characters in movie two. Will Dorothy be a character in “Part Two”? In the show, Dorothy is around. They have to intersect, and you can only tease it so much. I won’t say whether she’s a character, necessarily, in movie two. There’s a part of me that wants everyone’s Dorothy to be the whatever Dorothy they want. And yet, there is interaction and some crossover. So I’ll leave that up to “Part Two.” Is it true that MGM has the copyright to the Yellow Brick Road and the ruby slippers? Did you need permission to reference them? We had boundaries of what we could reference or not. We never use the ruby slippers. Nessa has on crystal slippers as in the Frank L. Baum book, Gregory Maguire book and the show. I don’t think the phrase “yellow brick road” is copywritten, but definitely the shape of the road is. We couldn’t do the spiral. We had to do a circle that continues to show it’s not where the road ends. How did you decide where to add new characters and expand the plot? We moved backward from “Defying Gravity.” What is Elphaba’s superpower? Her superpower is her relationship with nature and gravity. OK, so then you need to know more about her growing up. We added a scene where she’s young. Is it because she’s green or she has this power that everyone’s scared of her? It’s a bit muddy in the show. It has to be because of her power and her green. So then we had to show the power. So when she’s born, everything flies up. She expresses her frustrations and anxiety through this relationship with gravity. When she’s a kid and she’s bullied, she doesn’t know how to control it yet. We also see that Glinda says “I know that was you down there” to Elphaba [about her powers] even though everyone believed Madame Morrible. It shows Glinda is actually smart and aware. She’s not this ditzy character. Those things were important to build characters. You also have to show passage of time, which is hard to do in the show and took space to do. When first-look images of the film were released, people on social media were vocal about those photos being dark. Yes. Tell them to turn up their brightness on their phone! I was curious about your reaction, knowing the movie is bright and colorful and not necessarily reflective of those pictures. I chose those images specifically. It was so early, and we had just started shooting. I wanted images that were evocative and provocative to show it’s not some bright, poppy story. We didn’t even have the effects done. The background was blue. I had to have VFX put in the sky. I was coloring it on my iPhone. We’re not doing this through a real process. I love playing in the shadows, but I did have my iPhone brightness very high. When I released the photos, literally from my iPhone, I realized, “Oh, everybody really doesn’t turn up their brightness that high.” I felt bad because I did that. There was no going through the studio. How did you decide how to stage and slow down parts of “Defying Gravity”? The nightmare of my life has been thinking about “Defying Gravity.” In the show, it’s very fast. She walks [away from] Wizard and goes into “I hope you’re happy.” It goes so fast that it doesn’t feel like the end of the movie and it doesn’t feel earned. Her whole journey leads to this. Doing it live was helpful. I didn’t know how long it would be until they acted those lines. We can’t add more words to “Defying Gravity.” So, what if when she thinks she’s ready to fly, she’s not, and she falls? That changed things for us. It was very scary. The whole time I was like, “OK, we’ll test this and see how offended people are by this.” We definitely crunched it in to not spread it out so much. My own brain was like, “I just want to make sure the fast version isn’t actually working now.” We did those versions too, and we’re like, “No, we actually need all of this. This is much bigger than just a song. This is about the ending of a movie and journey of a character that we’ve invested in it so much.” [Producer] Marc Platt was like, “Wow, you’re really breaking the song up....” We had those moments. We kicked the tires up all the time. There was not one stone unturned, not one thing that we did not question, because we knew how important this was. That’s why it kept me up at night. Is there a number you felt benefitted going from stage to screen? “Something Bad” is hard to do on stage. It’s in the classroom, and Dr. Dillamond has nothing to do. So this idea that they were having a secret meeting with all these animals, and the animals were not upright, creepy human animals, but actually animals, help us empathize with them more. There’s a community that’s being affected by this, and they’ve been keeping a secret record of all these incidents that are happening. There’s a darker underbelly to Oz. Marketing for “Wicked” has been next level. How will you sustain the momentum for “Part Two” in November 2025? I don’t know, but “Part Two,” I will say because I’ve cut “Part Two” together, is a doozy. You getting the meat. I did not know the context of where we’d be in society right now. It becomes eight times more relevant than before when you’re talking about truth and consequences of making the right or wrong choices. It’s intense.
