NATO and Ukraine to hold emergency talks after Russian attack with hypersonic missile

Spokesman of the Emeka Beke-led All Progressives Congress (APC) Rivers State, Mr Darlington Nwauju, has warned the National Working Committee (NWC) led by Alhaji Abdullahi Ganduje of the dangers of disregard for the rule of law. This is as he accused the National Chairman of APC, of alleged disregard for court orders, injunctions and judgments relating to the party both in Rivers State and others warning that such contributed to the huge election losses suffered by the party in Rivers State in 2015, 2019 and 2023 He added that Ganduje was frustrating efforts of lasting peace in the leadership of the party in the state. Speaking with Journalists on Monday, Nwauju accused Ganduje of dictatorial leadership style, urging him and Okocha’s leadership to stop desecrating the judiciary and de-marketing the party. Nwauju expressed sadness over an alleged conspiracy to delete the memories of the supporters of Emeka Beke’s leadership of APC “who unfortunately lost their bid to rewrite the history of the party here in Rivers and ensure that justice is not served on sponsors and perpetrators of those barbaric crimes that took place in 2015, 2019 and 2023”. Recall that a Port Harcourt High Court last week nullified the party’s recent LG and State congresses organised by the Tony Okocha-led Caretaker Committee, saying they were in utter disrespect of court order and Court judgment. The High Court, presided over by Justice Godswill Obomanu, nullified the LGA and State congresses and awarded a cost of N10 million against the defendants (APC & Alhaji Ganduje), the National Chairman of the party. Nwauju regretted that the party had suffered avoidable media bashing in recent weeks and months “due to the dictatorial leadership style of Alhaji Ganduje who seems to be in such a hurry to rewrite our painful history”. He said “It would not be out of place for any journalist in this room today to confidently construct beautiful headlines that will pull by the nose given the notorious fact that, Alhaji Abdullahi Ganduje, who promised internal democracy for the party on August 3, 2023 after his ratification by NEC, has managed the Rivers State chapter exactly like a workman quarrelling with his tools. “We are worried that Alhaji Ganduje is doing everything possible to bully the very principles of progressivism upon which our party was founded and to even imagine the peculiarity of the Rivers state chapter of the party where tons of human beings had their lives cut short for their membership of the APC“. Nwauju stressed that since the High Court judgement is on appeal and the Court of Appeal fixed 4th and 12th February 2025 to hear the matter, “what is the rush in countering the order of Court? He said that if the APC under Ganduje had any respect for the rule of law, it would have waited for the determination of the cases in court before going on with the congresses again and injunction of the court. Speaking about the alleged plan to suspend their supporters, he said “expelling Chief Emeka Beke and the rest of us who are rightful officers of the party in the state and accusing us of collaborating with the Governor of Rivers State to embarrass the APC? If we may ask which of the APCs? The one they sabotaged in 2015, 2019 and 2023? Is it the same APC that they abandoned to join the SDP and jumped ship to openly campaign for the PDP and Governor Fubara? Nwauju questioned. READ MORE FROM: NIGERIAN TRIBUNE

A common misconception that surrounds the notion of "Trump 2.0" is the belief that such leaders are destined to succeed in the political arena. Professor Ouyang Hui highlights the unpredictability of electoral outcomes and the influence of external factors on leadership trajectories. While figures may rise to prominence with a similar style or rhetoric to Trump, their ultimate success hinges on a myriad of internal and external variables that cannot be predetermined. However, reports have emerged indicating that scalpers have been buying up these vouchers in bulk, often using automated bots to secure large quantities before regular citizens have a chance to access them. Check out the report card from Nebraska's 44-25 win against Wisconsin on Saturday at Memorial Stadium. Who can name Nebraska's last 100-yard rusher in a game, before Emmett Johnson achieved the feat Saturday? Johnson ran like he had something to prove, repeatedly shedding the first Badger to get to him. His best run of the day may have been a 19-yard burst in the third quarter when he patiently followed pulling linemen Ben Scott and Henry Lutovsky. Dante Dowdell has a knack for the end zone, scoring three times. (Trivia answer: Chubba Purdy ... against Wisconsin last year). Dylan Raiola has his rhythm back. He spent most of the game hovering around a 70 percent completion rate, which is reminiscent of his first four or five games. The ball is getting out of his hands quicker, and those pitch-and-catches are finally going for big gains. One of his best throws of the day was originally ruled a touchdown on a fade ball to Isaiah Neyor, but replay confirmed he didn't get a foot down. Jahmal Banks had a great TD snag in which he leaped, snared the ball and got his toes down. John Bullock's second tackle for loss of the game stopped Wisconsin's Tawee Walker on fourth-and-1 midway through the third quarter, and it felt like an early dagger for the home team. Bullock was a standout on senior day. The Huskers had some open-field tackling issues but held their own on third- and fourth-down situations. Darrion Dupree was a nice change-of-pace option for the Badgers, averaging 7.5 yards on his seven attempts. Wisconsin found success early on slant passes, including one that went to Vinny Anthony for 42 yards after Isaac Gifford whiffed on a tackle. After that, Braedyn Locke was able to open it for deep balls, including touchdown tosses of 24 and 58 yards. Wisconsin's Vinny Anthony had a big day, racking up six catches for 128 yards and Locke threw for more yards than he has in his past five games. A cool moment for DeShon Singleton, who came down with an interception in his final game at Memorial Stadium. Brian Buschini is having a great season, and Saturday was another notch on his belt. First, he ripped a 52-yard punt that flipped field possession, and he followed that up with a 49-yard boot that went out of bounds at the Wisconsin 3-yard line. Equally as impressive was kicker John "ol' reliable" Hohl, who made all three of his field goals and stayed clean on extra points. Oh, and how about Jacory Barney's 55-yard kick return to open the game? NU's third phase is trending up after a turbulent stretch. A question we might not ever get an answer to: Why was Matt Rhule forced to use a challenge to review Wisconsin's first-quarter touchdown? Don't all scoring plays get reviewed automatically? In a similar situation later in the game, Wisconsin was spared from using a challenge for officials to take another look at a Nebraska touchdown, which was reversed. Also, the unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on Micah Mazzccua for spiking the ball on a touchdown felt unnecessary. Nebraska scored a touchdown on its first possession of a game for the first time since the Northern Iowa game. A true tone-setter. There's plenty to unpack from Holgorsen's play sheet — it's no coincidence it only took him two games to pop a 100-yard rusher. And, 44 points for a team that has scored 20 (twice), 17, 7 and 14 in its past five games. That'll do. For the first time in 49 days, Nebraska won a football game. That was a long 49 for everyone involved. This one is a little more cathartic than usual, too, as the Huskers finally wrapped their arms around a bowl berth. It also takes a big bite out of the pressure NU faces on Black Friday vs. Iowa, which is no longer a "must-win." Get local news delivered to your inbox!

(AP Photo/John Minchillo, File) NEW YORK (AP) — The founder and former CEO of the failed cryptocurrency lending platform Celsius Network could face decades in prison after pleading guilty Tuesday to federal fraud charges, admitting that he misled customers about the business. Alexander Mashinsky , 58, of Manhattan, entered the plea in New York federal court to commodities and securities fraud. He admitted illegally manipulating the price of Celsius’s proprietary crypto token while secretly selling his own tokens at inflated prices to pocket about $48 million before Celsius collapsed into bankruptcy in 2022. In court, he admitted that in 2021 he publicly suggested there was regulatory consent for the company's moves because he knew that customers “would find false comfort” with that. And he said that in 2019, he was selling the crypto tokens even though he told the public that he was not. He said he knew customers would draw false comfort from that too. “I accept full responsibility for my actions,” Mashinsky said of crimes that stretched from 2018 to 2022 as the company pitched itself to customers as a modern-day bank where they could safely deposit crypto assets and earn interest. U.S. Attorney Damian Williams said in a release that Mashinsky “orchestrated one of the biggest frauds in the crypto industry” as his company's assets purportedly grew to about $25 billion at its peak, making it one of the largest crypto platforms in the world. He said Mashinsky used catchy slogans like “Unbank Yourself” to entice prospective customers with a pledge that their money would be as safe in crypto accounts as money would be in a bank. Meanwhile, prosecutors said, Mashinsky and co-conspirators used customer deposits to fund market purchases of the Celsius token to prop up its value. Machinsky made tens of millions of dollars selling his own CEL tokens at artificially high prices, leaving his customers “holding the bag when the company went bankrupt,” Williams said. An indictment alleged that Mashinsky promoted Celsius through media interviews, his social media accounts and Celsius’ website, along with a weekly “Ask Mashinsky Anything” session broadcast that was posted to Celsius’ website and a YouTube channel. Celsius employees from multiple departments who noticed false and misleading statements in the sessions warned Mashinsky, but they were ignored, the indictment said. A plea agreement Mashinsky made with prosecutors calls for him to be sentenced to up to 30 years in prison and to forfeit over $48 million, which is the amount of money he allegedly made by selling his company's token. Sentencing was scheduled for April 8. Larry Neumeister, The Associated Press See a typo/mistake? Have a story/tip? Proper handling of your turkey means paying attention to temperatures during thawing and cooking. To prepare the turkey, remove the neck and giblets from the cavity before roasting — these can be cooked separately to make gravy. Wash your hands thoroughly after touching the turkey to avoid spreading germs in your kitchen. Put your completely thawed turkey breast-side up in a large roasting pan with 2 to 2 1/2-inch sides. If you have a rack for roasting, you can place it in the bottom of the pan, but this is not essential. If desired, place some quartered onion or apple or a small bunch of herbs inside the turkey. You may also coat the skin with some oil, salt, and pepper. To keep the turkey moist, add 1/2-1 cup of water to the pan and place the pan in the oven. Set the oven temperature to 325°F and check the turkey every couple of hours. An 8- to 12-pound turkey will need 23/4 to 3 hours before it is done. Using a food thermometer, check several places on the turkey. The thermometer should register 165°F in the innermost part of the thigh, the innermost part of the wing and the thickest part of the breast. If you have stuffed your turkey, the center of the stuffing should also be at 165°F. Remove the fully cooked turkey from the oven and let it rest for 1520 minutes before carving. Due to food safety concerns, cooking your stuffing in a casserole dish apart from the turkey is recommended. If you do choose to stuff your turkey, loosely fill the cavity immediately before placing the turkey in the oven. As instructed above, before removing the turkey from the oven, the center of the stuffing should be 165°F. Turkeys can be roasted safely and more quickly in a roasting bag at 350°F. A defrosted, unstuffed 12–16-pound turkey will take 2 to 2 1/2 hours. Check that a safe internal temperature of 165°F has been reached at the innermost part of the thigh and wing and the thickest part of the breast. Be cautious when opening or puncturing the bag to avoid burns. For whole, unstuffed turkeys in oven roasting bags, cook at 350°F for the following approximate times: 8–12-pound turkey: 1 1/2 1/2 1/2 1/2 Refer to the manufacturer-provided instructions on the oven bags for specific timetables. When buying a turkey, allow 1 to 11⁄2 pounds per person. Thaw turkey in the refrigerator or cold water. A thawed turkey may be stored in the refrigerator and cooked within one to two days. See table for details. When thawing turkey in cold water, wrap it securely so that water is not able to leak through; change the water every 30 minutes. When thawing turkey in a microwave oven, check owner’s manual for the size turkey that will fit in your microwave oven, the minutes per pound and the power level to use for thawing. Remove all outside wrapping and any metal clips and place turkey in a microwave safe dish to catch drips. Cook turkey immediately; do not refrigerate or refreeze. Turkey is done when the innermost part of the thigh and wing and the thickest part of the breast reach the minimum internal temperature of 165°F. Refrigerate all leftovers within two hours. Discard any turkey, stuffing or gravy left at room temperatures longer than two hours. Use refrigerated turkey and stuffing within three to four days. Use gravy within one to two days. Leftover turkey and gravy can also be frozen for longer term storage. This institution is an equal opportunity provider. Here is a dressing you may want to use if you do not have a favorite. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Spray a 9 by 13 pan with cooking spray. In a large skillet, sauté the onions and celery in the butter until soft. Place the bread cubes in a large bowl. Pour the melted butter, onion and celery mixture over the bread cubes. Add the salt, pepper, poultry seasoning, chicken stock and eggs. Mix well. Spread the stuffing evenly in the prepared baking pan. Bake 30 to 35 minutes or until golden brown. You can use old bread, biscuits or buy bread cubes for the recipe. Make sure to use enough bread cubes to soak up the liquids. The Pulaski County Extension Office will be closed Thursday and Friday for the Thanksgiving Holiday. Mike Tyson returned to the ring last month after a 19-year break - only to face defeat against Jake Paul . The professional bout, which ended in a unanimous decision win for Paul , occurred on November 15 at the AT&T Stadium and left fans underwhelmed - some didn't bother to stay until the end. The once-formidable 'Iron Mike' couldn't clinch a knockout victory over the spry social media star-turned-boxer, who elegantly navigated the match over eight rounds. Following the anticlimactic event where the former heavyweight champion struggled to land a punch, calls for Tyson to return to retirement intensified. But Evander Holyfield has thrown down the gauntlet for a third fight with Tyson, fuelling speculation of their long-awaited trilogy. Holyfield took to Instagram posting a mock-up fight poster reading "The trilogy Tyson VS Holyfield" - attaching a tantalizing caption: "The fans want it #unfinishedbusiness." It seems despite the drawbacks, the thirst for a classic ring rivalry remains unquenched, and Holyfield is keen to deliver just that. However, Tyson quickly shot down the idea of a rematch with Holyfield, saying: "I love you brother, but the trilogy is our friendship." Fans rallied behind Tyson, with one commenting: "We love you, so we don't want to see it," and another saying: "After Tyson's performance, rather not see him step in the ring anymore... now everybody wanna try and pick on Tyson." Holyfield had recently expressed interest in a third fight with Tyson on 'The Big Podcast with Shaquille O'Neal', stating: "When I said that, I would do it, you know? But we asked him a long time ago and he decided not to do it and it was okay." Reflecting on the possibility of a trilogy fight, Holyfield shared: "The thing is, I'm a supportive person. I don't have nothing against none of the boxers. I know what it is, what it takes to do it and even though I tried to handle myself... "My mama told me 'you've got to have this look on your face all the time and even when you feel there's people wanna talk you into bragging, don't brag'. And I kinda felt that I did everything great, and I become the person that I am." The two boxing legends have a long history, with Holyfield defeating Tyson by an 11th-round TKO in November 1996, when Tyson held the WBA heavyweight title. The infamous rematch in 1997 ended with Tyson being disqualified. Holyfield quickly took control of the fight, which led to Tyson infamously chomping down on his right ear in sheer frustration. The fight was briefly stopped and Tyson faced a two-point deduction, yet the match continued. Not long after, Tyson bit Holyfield’s left ear before they slugged it out until the third round concluded. Replays ensured Tyson's disqualification, allowing Holyfield to retain his WBA title. Despite their tumultuous past, Holyfield and Tyson are now good friends.Grades: Nebraska 44, Wisconsin 25

Saints hope to ride the Rizzi factor back to relevance after their bye weekCentre has created only 25 LMT rice space: MinMason Falslev scores 25, grabs 12 rebounds to lead Utah State to 77-69 victory over IowaLike clockwork, ( ) delivered another round of explosive growth in its , but investors seemed to be missing the most impressive part of the performance. The company didn't mention it in the earnings call or press release, consigning it instead to the "CFO Commentary" section of its earnings report. By now, most investors know that the data centre segment is driving Nvidia's growth. While Nvidia's business spans everything from gaming to autonomous vehicles to visualisation tools like the Omniverse, its success in the data centre business, driven by the explosive growth of , has stolen the narrative and now makes up the vast majority of Nvidia's revenue. While overall revenue in the fiscal 2025 third quarter jumped 94% from a year ago to $35.1 billion, growth in the data centre segment was even stronger, climbing 112% from a year ago to $30.8 billion. However, Nvidia breaks down its data centre revenue into two categories. It brings in revenue from "networking" and "compute." Compute refers to the components that run applications on a server, such as processors and memory chips. Networking includes components like switches and routers that provide the connectivity and the security needed for the applications to run. AI training and inference are driven by the compute components so it makes sense that compute makes up the bulk of that revenue. Data centre networking revenue in the third quarter grew just 20% year over year to $3.1 billion, while data centre compute revenue was up 132% to $27.6 billion. The data centre compute figure looks like the best reflection of the underlying growth in Nvidia's business, even with the discrepancy between as the company said several times on the earnings call that the business is supply-constrained and it expects those constraints to continue for the next several quarters, especially on the Blackwell platform. Data centre compute revenue also grew 22% sequentially, above 17% overall sequential growth for the whole company. and 17% sequential growth in the data centre. The chart below shows the performance in data centre compute revenue over the last several quarters. The data centre compute platform is at the core of Nvidia's AI offering. It accelerates the most compute-intensive workloads, and it includes a wide range of products such as APIs, software development kits (SDKs), its DGX Cloud, which is an AI training-as-a-service platform, and GPUs, DPUs, and AI enterprise software. All of that makes it very difficult to compete with Nvidia and helps explain why the data centre business is growing so fast. Revenue growth is heating up The other telling data point in the table above is that while Nvidia's year-over-year revenue growth in the data centre compute segment continued to decelerate, sequential revenue growth, which is arguably a better barometer of growth, accelerated from 17% to 22%, lifting a similar acceleration in overall revenue from 15% to 17%. Sequential growth of 22% would translate to a 122% year-over-year growth rate if the business grew at that pace over four quarters. Given the and management's commentary about demand outstripping supply for the next several quarters, the company could maintain a growth rate similar to that over the next year. What's next for Nvidia? Nvidia stock fell slightly on the earnings report. Investors seemed to think guidance was underwhelming as the company called for year-over-year revenue growth to slow to 70% in the fourth quarter, with the top line reaching $37.5 billion, plus or minus 2%. However, Nvidia has a long history of topping its guidance, and it looks like a good bet to do so again in the fourth quarter, given the scorching growth from the data centre compute business and locked-in demand for its Blackwell platform. Don't be surprised to see Nvidia top that forecast again three months from now. The business is on fire. It continues to deliver stellar results, and there's little in the way to slow it down.

Securities and Exchange Commission Chair Gary Gensler, who was aggressive in his oversight of cryptocurrencies and other financial markets, will step down from his post on Jan. 20. Gensler pushed changes that he said protected investors, but the industry and many Republicans bristled at what they saw as overreach. President-elect Donald Trump had promised during his campaign that he would remove Gensler. But Gensler on Thursday announced that he would be stepping down from his post on the day that Trump is inaugurated. Bitcoin has jumped 40% since Trump’s victory. It hit new highs Thursday and was nearing $100,000. Bitcoin moved notably higher still after Gensler's resignation was announced. Gensler's stance on the rise of cryptocurrencies was captured during a speech he gave during the first year of his chairmanship in 2021 where he described the market as “the Wild West.” “This asset class is rife with fraud, scams, and abuse in certain applications,” he said in a speech at the Aspen Security Forum. “There’s a great deal of hype and spin about how crypto assets work. In many cases, investors aren’t able to get rigorous, balanced, and complete information.” Under Gensler, the SEC brought actions against players in the crypto industry for fraud , wash trading and other violations, including as recently as last month when the commission brought fraud charges against three companies purporting to be market makers, along with nine individuals for trying to manipulate various crypto markets. Yet access to cryptocurrencies became more widespread under Gensler. In January, the SEC approved exchange-traded funds that track the spot price of bitcoin. With such ETFs, investors could get easier access to bitcoin without the huge overlays required to buy it directly. Gensler, however, acknowledged the SEC had denied earlier, similar applications for such ETFs, including Grayscale Bitcoin Trust, among the first to eventually be approved by the SEC. “Circumstances, however, have changed,” Gensler said, pointing to a ruling by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia that said the SEC failed to adequately explain its reasoning in rejecting Grayscale’s proposal. Even there, Gensler made sure not to endorse the merits of bitcoin. He pointed to how ETFs that hold precious metals are tracking prices of things that have “consumer and industrial users, while in contrast bitcoin is primarily a speculative, volatile asset that’s also used for illicit activity including ransomware, money laundering, sanction evasion, and terrorist financing.” Gensler was tested early in his tenure with the rise of the meme stock phenomenon that shocked the financial system in early 2021. Earlier this year, the SEC under Gensler pushed Wall Street to speed up how long it takes for trades of stocks to settle, one of the areas where the commission’s staff recommended changes following the reckoning created by GameStop , one of the first meme stocks. In the depths of the COVID-19 pandemic, hordes of smaller-pocketed and novice investors suddenly piled into the stock of the struggling video-game retailer. During the height of the frenzy, several brokerages barred customers from buying GameStop after the clearinghouse that settles their trades demanded more cash to cover the increased risk created by its highly volatile price. In May 2024, new rules meant broker-dealers have to fully settle their trades within one business day of the trade date, down from the previous two. Critics of the SEC under Gensler have called many of the agency's proposals overly burdensome. The investment industry, for example, is pushing against a proposal to force some advisers and companies disclose more about their environmental, social and governance practices, otherwise known as ESG. Critics say the proposal is overly complex and increases the risk of investor confusion, while imposing unnecessary burdens and costs on funds. On Thursday, Gensler stood by the SEC's track record under his direction. “The staff and the Commission are deeply mission-driven, focused on protecting investors, facilitating capital formation, and ensuring that the markets work for investors and issuers alike," Gensler said in prepared remarks. “The staff comprises true public servants." Gensler previously served as Chair of the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission, leading the Obama Administration’s reform of the $400 trillion swaps market. He also was senior advisor to U.S. Senator Paul Sarbanes in writing the Sarbanes-Oxley Act (2002) and was undersecretary of the Treasury for Domestic Finance and assistant secretary of the Treasury from 1997-2001.online casino free bonus

As a matter of routine last spring, University of Montana graduate student Erin Dozhier would settle into their home office on the north end of Missoula and prepare for a barrage of questions about houseplants and parrots. The queries came from public school kids hundreds of miles away, their worlds temporarily connected to Dozhier’s through a version of Zoom often utilized by therapists for virtual counseling. Usually, Dozhier would start with their most tried-and-true strategy for building rapport with young clients. “Number one, if you want students to talk to you, ask them about their pets or show them your pet,” said Dozhier, whose parrot Alfie often made appearances in such sessions. Dozhier is one of a growing number of students from UM’s social work, school counseling and mental health counseling programs who have delivered such services for K-12 children in Montana’s far-flung rural districts. What began as an experimental effort to address the mental health side of school safety has, over the past five years, evolved into a fixture both for the university’s Safe Schools Center and for the small schools it serves. Dubbed VAST — short for Virtually Assisted School Teams — the program now boasts six grad students and 22 participating districts stretching from the Bitterroot Valley to the North Dakota border. The free counseling services VAST has made available to young Montanans highlight a growing focus among leaders across the state’s education continuum on student mental health. According to Montana’s latest Youth Risk Behavior Survey, 43% of responding high school students reported feeling sad or hopeless for two or more weeks in a row, and more than a quarter had seriously considered suicide — the highest annual rate since 1991. Educators often point to rising rates of youth anxiety and depression as a contributor to the steady decline in statewide academic performance, and for schools large and small, financial and hiring difficulties frequently stand in the way of providing robust mental health resources. Even outside the K-12 system, such support for students in Montana’s more rural communities may be dozens if not hundreds of miles away. RELATED COVERAGE These Native tribes are working with schools to boost attendance Native American students miss school at higher rates. It only got worse during the pandemic Tensions rise as teachers remain on the picket line in 3 Massachusetts communities For program leader Tammy Tolleson Knee, who serves as school support liaison for UM’s Safe Schools Center, the issues VAST was crafted to address have only become more pressing since the pandemic and speak to social and societal forces at work well beyond a school’s hallways. She told MTFP that as of this week, 53 K-12 students in Montana have been referred to the program for one-on-one counseling, with more than a dozen more referrals expected. “One of the great hardships for families is just what’s happening with the economy,” Tolleson Knee said. “And when families are stressed, kids become stressed.” Some districts, including in the northeast Montana town of Bainville, have been relying on VAST for years to meet the needs of their most vulnerable students. Other districts such as the Broadus Public Schools have only recently joined the program but are already reporting an impact. Broadus school counselor Dori Phillips told Montana Free Press that in the two months since the district formalized its participation, she’s already referred six students to one-on-one tele-counseling through VAST. “I don’t know where I would be without the help with those particular kiddos,” Phillips said. When Dan Lee first envisioned the VAST program in 2019, he saw tele-counseling as the preventative prong in a larger effort to address student safety. As then-head of UM’s Safe Schools Center , Lee heard time and again from educators that shortages of mental health professionals in rural communities posed a significant hurdle to getting children the help they needed before their personal struggles reached a critical level. The challenge, Lee told MTFP, was in developing an initiative that didn’t reinforce misconceptions — tied to school shootings — about mental health as a public safety concern. “One of the concerns we had was we can’t criminalize mental health,” said Lee, now the dean of UM’s College of Education, which houses the campus’ various counseling programs as well as the Safe Schools Center. “We can’t say if you are depressed, you are a threat. You can’t do that. When you’re depressed, it doesn’t mean you’re a threat to anybody. So we didn’t like the idea of classifying mental illness as a threat to schools because it’s not.” VAST, which kicked off during the 2020-21 academic year with two participating schools, fit neatly into a collection of services Lee and his cohorts developed for Montana schools, providing a compassion-centric therapeutic tool to complement the center’s more site-specific threat assessments, staff training and its 24/7 school safety hotline. At the same time, Lee said, the initiative began giving UM students greater access to the clinical hours needed to obtain their degrees and licenses, hours that can be difficult to get. In the years since, VAST has increasingly filled a void in rural communities with participating schools. Tolleson Knee recalled the story of one student who had previously received counseling in a community an hour away from home, until the family’s finances could no longer sustain the costs of travel and treatment. Her colleague, Safe Schools Center Director Emily Sallee, added that even if families are able to sustain private mental health services, outside professionals may not be effective at coordinating with in-school staff. By comparison, VAST relies on teachers and school counselors — the latter a state-mandated position in public schools — to coordinate with UM-side practitioners and keep them informed about any developments in a student’s life that may go unseen or unacknowledged in a tele-counseling session. “There’s this huge wraparound piece that’s often missing when kids are accessing counseling outside of schools,” Sallee said, “and it’s a huge part of how all these people can be supporting this kiddo, not just the counselor.” For Deborah Ith, the team-centered aspect of the program has been an important facet of her VAST experience this fall. A doctoral student in UM’s school psychology program, Ith currently has three teenage students in rural schools that she meets with remotely at least once a week via a paid, HIPAA-compliant version of Zoom. Their struggles have primarily been interpersonal ones, Ith said, and on a couple of occasions have risen to the level that Ith has reached out to the school counselor and parents to develop a group plan of support. “Sometimes that means trying to support parents because that’s really scary,” Ith continued. “When you’re a parent and you have somebody call you up and be like, ‘Hey, this came up, this is going on, you need to know about it, this is what we talked about as a way to support and this is what you can do to support them,’ that’s really hard to hear sometimes.” Even as VAST participants continue to provide such day-to-day services for a growing collection of rural schools, Tolleson Knee is identifying opportunities to expand the program’s offerings even further. She told MTFP that starting this spring, the Safe Schools Center plans to try out a hybrid version of VAST in one Bitterroot Valley school that will include a monthly in-person counseling session for students on top of three monthly tele-counseling sessions. The University of Montana isn’t alone in recognizing the challenges rural schools face in providing adequate mental health support for their students. The nonprofit Montana Small Schools Alliance has developed its own 24/7 crisis support app , which mental health resources director Cindy Fouhy said has so far been accessed by more than 20,000 students across the state. In addition, the alliance — in partnership with the Montana Professional Learning Collaborative — has developed a free tele-counseling model of its own. Like VAST, the focus is primarily on Montana’s smallest and most resource-starved schools where dedicated one-on-one intervention simply isn’t available. “You go to these small schools and they may not even have a certified counselor,” Fouhy said. “If they do, he or she is also teaching classes and doing 500 other things.” The factors that make mental health support in rural communities so difficult can also fuel the very stressors that necessitate such support in the first place. Consider Broadus, a town of fewer than 500 people anchored to the vast prairie of southeastern Montana. The local K-12 school boasts a student population of roughly 225, some of whom travel up to 70 miles one way to attend Power River County’s sole high school. According to data from the Office of Public Instruction, more than a third of the student population is classified as economically disadvantaged. Politics, drought, alcohol use — there are a lot of issues influencing local families, said Broadus school counselor Dori Phillips, and those pressures “trickle to our students.” Professional help is more than 80 miles away in every direction. Stress and geographic isolation are exacerbated by a persistent social stigma around seeking mental health treatment, one that Phillips has struggled, family by individual family, to overcome. “Getting our families to commit to taking their kids for help is almost impossible in many cases,” Phillips said. “I have very few students on my caseload. I think there’s three total that actually travel out of town to get help.” Broadus Public Schools used to offer more robust mental health services for students through the state-sponsored Comprehensive School and Community Treatment program, or CSCT. But the district’s access dried up about two years ago following legislative changes to how services were administered , and the availability of a part-time school psychologist has largely served during emergencies or as a backup on days when Phillips isn’t working. So when Phillips heard of VAST in a statewide association email, she instantly saw the prospect of free, in-school tele-counseling as a carrot for local families. “I can work with kids on friendship issues, I can help kids if they’re having trouble managing homework or learning organizational skills, those types of things,” said Phillips, whose school counseling license is distinct from the licenses granted to clinical therapists. “But when you have a family who deals with the loss of a parent or a caregiver, you have a family who goes through even a nasty divorce or a child who has a lot of trauma from their early years, those are things that they really need a private counselor for. Someone who’s licensed and knows how to work with kids.” In just two months, the number of Broadus students receiving tele-counseling services through VAST has grown to six, and Phillips said she’s working to connect three more students with the program. A few hundred miles to the north, Bainville school counselor Amy Iversen said the number of students she’s referred to VAST has grown from two students in 2022 to seven last school year. She described the ag-and-oil community as similarly small, with 172 students across all grades, and similarly isolated, with the closest larger population center lying across the state line in Williston, North Dakota. For Iversen, UM’s program came along at a critical time for several students who showed signs of behavioral issues or depression and whose families lacked the resources for private counseling. “They can come in and talk to me about it, but then you know what? They’re going to see me again in class in two days and they’re going to be like, ‘Oh, crap, is she going to say something?’” Iversen said. “They probably don’t want me to know all their secrets. I’ve got kids in the school, some of them are friends with my own kids. It’s awkward for them, so when you’re in a small school, it helps with that confidentiality.” In some cases, parents have commented to Iversen on a noticeable difference in their child’s confidence, self-esteem or coping skills as a result of ongoing therapy. And while school-based counseling has its limits — like the services provided by traditional school counselors , VAST is not offered during the summer break — Iversen hopes the mental health skills students glean during the school year can see them through the off months. “That’s better than not getting anything,” Iversen said. Dozhier, the UM grad student, didn’t have to look much farther than their own childhood in a small Oregon timber town to understand the issues facing the young Montana clients they counseled last spring. Kids are smarter and more observant than people think, Dozhier said, which means when pressures like joblessness, food insecurity or substance abuse weigh on a household, children pick up on it. They may act out or isolate themselves, sometimes without knowing why, and the last thing such a student can focus on is learning. “Their thinking brains are off,” Dozhier said. Dozhier’s parrot Alfie may help break the ice, but helping a child navigate issues they may not fully understand requires more than just talking about pets and plants. In sessions with VAST, Dozhier said they primarily utilize a style of counseling called play therapy, allowing a student to play freely with whatever toys they choose. Their actions may give the counselor some subtle insight into what’s going on in their lives, Dozhier said. Fighting between toys could, for example, be indicative of difficult relationships with siblings or other family members and help guide a counselor’s questions. “Even though it looks like play, we find that pertinent themes come up in play, even without specifically saying, ‘Hey, how’s your relationship with your brother?’” Dozhier said. “It’s almost like watching a theater play that doesn’t have a lot of words and kind of using that to draw conclusions.” Ith’s work with older students this fall has also underscored the added stress coming to age in a smaller community can place on a 21st-century teen. She acknowledges that the rural nature of the schools she serves through VAST can help reinforce a sense of support, giving some students an awareness that others around them recognize the experiences they’re going through. But it’s a “double-edged sword,” she said, one that can make it difficult to find new peer groups or move past incidents of bullying. At the Montana Small Schools Alliance, Fouhy notes that social media and technology can exacerbate such issues in ways older generations may not fully understand. “The kids can’t get away from stressors,” Fouhy said. “In the 80s, kids could go home and if they had to fight at school, they wouldn’t have to worry about it again ’til Monday. But now it just goes on and on, and the conflict and the stress that’s just in their pocket is significant.” Remote delivery of the one-on-one services that can help students process such situations does pose challenges, and leaders at VAST are quick to note that the program isn’t a solution for budgetary shortfalls or hiring challenges. Dozhier and Ith both credit the effectiveness of their work to individuals in the communities they’ve served — school counselors, teachers, parents. Tele-counseling initiatives haven’t sought to replace those voices but rather to create oases in Montana’s rural desert of outside mental health services, and Tolleson Knee has heard from past participants that the anonymity of therapy was a key motivator. “When you do live in those small communities, it’s just so hard to be objective,” Tolleson Knee said. “I heard students and family saying it was so nice to know we weren’t going to like have this intense session where we’re talking about really personal stuff and then run into (the counselor) in the grocery store.” The experience of meeting such a need fits well with Dozhier’s long-term professional goal of returning to rural Oregon as a counselor, and they are slated to return to the VAST cohort of practitioners-in-training this spring as it branches into in-person service. But while the program is great at doing what it’s doing, Dozhier recognizes even private counseling has its limits. A few sessions with a therapist won’t erase the issues that arise for a child when, say, a parent is overworked, stretched thin and struggling just to put food on the table. When it comes to improving mental health, Dozhier said, the challenge is far more systematic than one school, one university or one counselor can handle alone. “The answer to all of this kid’s woes is maybe not counseling for a year,” Dozhier said. “The answer maybe to so many of these woes would be to reduce stress on the family, and that’s something that our systems aren’t set up to do.” ___ This story was originally published by Montana Free Press and distributed through a partnership with The Associated Press.

The Taliban's supreme leader has reportedly ordered a ban on women attending nursing and midwivery institutes, closing a rare avenue they had to pursue an education beyond the sixth grade. Human Rights Watch says the ban was ordered by Taliban leader Haibatullah Akhundzada and conveyed to the Ministry of Public Health on Monday, then communicated to private medical training institutes soon after. Although the ban has yet to be formally announced, two government officials who spoke to NPR on condition of anonymity, because of the matter's sensitivity, confirmed it. In addition, several nursing and midwivery students told NPR that this week, they were not allowed to attend classes. The European Union has condemned the ban, while the United Nations chief mission in Afghanistan said it was "extremely concerned about a reported directive" that was preventing women and girls from attending private medical institutions. The state of education for girls under Taliban rule The ban reflects an ongoing Taliban effort to curtail education for girls beyond grade six. Despite the Taliban's policies, girls and women still have some options. In certain parts of the country, Taliban officials have quietly ignored the ban, allowing a small number of girls to take classes offered by private educational institutes and charities. And in February 2024, an important loophole opened for women. Officials in the Ministry of Public Health successfully lobbied the hardline Taliban leaders to allow women to take nursing and midwifery courses in a handful of mostly private training institutes and learning centers, according to Ashley Jackson , who closely tracks developments in Afghanistan as co-director of the Center on Armed Groups, a think-tank based in Switzerland. One motivation for this February decision was that in some provinces, the Taliban does not allow women to seek treatment from male medical professionals. "This new decree [banning women from nursing and midwifery training] will result in unnecessary pain, misery, sickness and death for the women forced to go without health care," said Sahar Fetrat of Human Rights Watch, in a statement. Students turned away from classes Human Rights Watch says the ban was ordered by Taliban leader, Haibatullah Akhundzada and conveyed to the Ministry of Public Health on Monday, then communicated to private medical training institutes soon after. Five Afghan women who were studying nursing and midwifery told NPR that they were turned away from their respective private institutions this week. They spoke to NPR on condition of anonymity to avoid being identified by authorities. One 22-year-old nursing student said she learned about the ban when her friends began calling to express their condolences. "Are you telling the truth?" she said she asked them. The young woman went to her institute in case her friends were misinformed. One of her teachers "told us to go home. The institute is closed until further notice," she said. One 22-year-old, who was studying economics before all women were banned from university study in 2022, told NPR she signed up for nursing classes, desperate to continue studying. She, too, rushed to her classes on Tuesday after word of the ban spread on social media, hoping it was a false rumor. She said the teachers were apologetic, "but unfortunately, we were not allowed to enter," she said. "Unfortunately, we could not do anything." "This is bad news for all Afghan people," she said angrily. "Because men cannot become midwives in Afghanistan." Men are not allowed to be midwives because of strict gender segregation customs. Challenges for medical education institutions Even before this week's news, medical education institutions have found it challenging to include women. "Medical schools have not been functioning as they should in the last three years," said Pashtana Durrani, founder of Learn Afghanistan, an organization operating secret schools in Afghanistan as well as a maternal health clinic where they trained midwives. "All they are doing now is closing any loopholes" of the ban on higher education for females, she said. "Many of us have faced increasing harassment from the authorities," she said. "In just the last two weeks, our staffs were detained and they [the Taliban] asked us for money to be allowed to stay open," she told NPR, adding that the constant harassment forced her organization's schools to transition to online lessons. "We don't have any in-person classes at all because they forced us into shutting down the last of our training program." "When we trained the younger women, I had hoped that maybe all these girls would graduate and establish their own institutions someday. But now that seems unlikely," Durrani said. "People often say that under the Taliban women are just left to reproduce. Well, now with this new ban, women are left to reproduce and then die on that same table because there will be nobody to help them. That's what it has come to," Durrani said. Indeed, Afghanistan is one of the most dangerous places in the world for a woman to give birth. According to a December 2023 statement from Stéphane Dujarric, spokesman for the U.N. Secretary-General, a woman dies every two hours across Afghanistan in birth-related complications. And the United Nations Population Fund, which tracks women's healthcare globally, reports that the country needs at least 18,000 more trained midwives to ensure basic maternal care to Afghan women. The ban on women studying basic nursing skills "makes absolutely no sense. Even according to the Taliban's own logic," says Jackson of the Center on Armed Groups. She said that even during the Taliban's rule in the 1990s, considered more extreme than the present government, they allowed women to take some medical courses. Jackson also notes that previous exceptions — allowing women to study nursing and midwivery — shows that "there are people inside the system fighting for more sensible policies who realize that Afghanistan needs midwives, it needs female doctors, it needs female nurses." But ultimately, the commands of Akhundzada, their spiritual leader, take precedence. "We know that his beliefs are radical to the extreme," Jackson says. "There's a real paranoia and a fear of losing control, and I think one of the ways that he, as well as the Taliban in the past, have expressed that, is through the control of women's bodies." Even as officials were turning away young Afghan women from health-care education this week, other Afghan women were hoping that soon, there would be some accountability for the Taliban's denial of their human rights. This week, the International Criminal Court's chief prosecutor, Karim Khan , said he could announce that " very considerable progress has already been made in the investigation of allegations of gender persecution" in Afghanistan. "I am confident that I will soon be in a position to announce concrete results," said Khan. One researcher at Human Rights Watch, Fereshta Abbasi , believes that Khan's statement indicates that he would "soon request applications for arrest warrants" for Taliban officials. Abbasi is from Afghanistan and currently lives in the United Kingdom. "Justice will prevail," she wrote on X. A Virginia zoo is celebrating the arrival of an adorable newborn pygmy hippo who made her debut just before Christmas. The baby hippo, a girl who has not yet been named, was born to parents Iris and Corwin at Metro Richmond Zoo on Dec. 9. She's their third female calf in under five years. The zoo said Iris was all smiles on Christmas morning. "Most people don't get a hippopotamus for Christmas at all, so we feel lucky to have received two over the years," the zoo said. Iris and Corwin's previous calf was born on Dec. 6, 2022. Iris delivered her latest newborn after a seven-month gestation, zoo officials said. She gave birth in an indoor pool. "The baby's natural instincts kicked in and she started moving around in the water immediately," the zoo said on its website. The mom and newborn are currently being kept in an enclosure that is not on exhibit to give them privacy while they bond. "Iris is an experienced mother and very protective of her calf," the zoo said. "The calf is nursing and growing quickly." The new pygmy hippo was weighed when she was 5 days old and came in at a healthy 15 pounds, the zoo said. She could grow to weigh up to 600 pounds. Her birth will help preserve the species, which is endangered. Fewer than 2,500 mature pygmy hippos remain in the wild, according to the zoo. The species is native to the swamps and rivers of West Africa, where it's threatened by poaching and loss of habitat. Pygmy hippos do not live in groups, so after they grew up, Iris' two previous calves were moved to other zoological facilities "to live with future mates and continue contributing to the conservation of their species," the zoo said. The species is nocturnal, and the zoo says they can live up to 55 years. Earlier this year, a newborn baby hippo in Thailand named Moo Deng became a global sensation when a zookeeper started sharing her cutest moments on social media. (AP) — This isn’t a week when coach Todd Bowles feels he needs to find the right words to ensure his Tampa Bay Buccaneers are motivated to face the last-place Carolina Panthers. The Bucs (8-7) have won eight of the last nine meetings between the NFC South rivals, including the past three with Baker Mayfield at quarterback. It hasn’t exactly been smoothly sailing against the Panthers (4-11), though, for the three-time defending division champions. And, with at least a share of first place on the line Sunday, Bowles and his players say they are focused solely on rebounding from last week’s disappointing loss to the Dallas Cowboys. “We know it’s going to be a tough ballgame. It went overtime last time. They’re coached very well; they play very hard,” Bowles said, referencing Tampa Bay’s 26-23 win at Carolina on Dec. 1. “We know what’s at stake for us. It doesn’t need to be talked about. Everybody understands that,” Bowles added. “We’ve got to clean up our own mistakes, and we’ve got to play an error-free football game.” The Bucs are tied with Atlanta for the best record in the NFC South, however the Falcons (8-7) hold the tiebreaker after sweeping the season series between the teams. To claim a fourth straight division title, Tampa Bay needs to win remaining home games against the Panthers and New Orleans Saints while Atlanta loses at least once in the last two weeks of the regular season. If the Falcons hold on to win the South, the Bucs can earn a wild-card playoff berth if they win out and the Washington Commanders lose twice. Mayfield, who has resurrected his career since being released by Carolina two years ago, summed up the attitude in a resilient locker room. The Bucs have won four of five games following a four-game losing streak threatened their playoff hopes. “I keep saying it, this team has the mental makeup of a great team. We just have to continue to fight and find ways to win,” the quarterback said. “If we don’t take of business, we won’t be in the playoffs.” Chuba’s revenge Panthers running back Chuba Hubbard cost his team the game four weeks ago against Tampa Bay when he fumbled on the second possession of overtime just after Carolina had reached field goal range. Mayfield responded by leading the Bucs back down the field for the winning field goal. The loss was devastating for Hubbard at the time, but he promised himself when the opportunity arose again he’d make the most of it. He did that this past Sunday, when he carried twice for 49 yards, including a 21-yard touchdown run in which he broke two tackles, in overtime to lift the Panthers to a 36-30 win over Arizona, knocking the Cardinals out of the playoff hunt. “I’d let it go, but it’s definitely been in the back of my head a little bit,” Hubbard said. “Like I said, when the next opportunity came, I told myself I’m going to get it back for them. To be able to have them trust me in that opportunity again, and to have it in that way is a blessing from God.” Young’s development Bryce Young has shown solid progress in his decision making, particularly when the pocket begins to break down. Last week, the second-year QB ran for a career-best 68 yards, including a 24-yard touchdown. Young was benched after two games this season, but since returning to the lineup has played better, restoring some faith that perhaps the No. 1 overall pick in 2023 can be the team’s quarterback of the future. “Just time in the system and time as a team for us to come together,” Young said of why he has improved. “For me, being able to get reps, and get time with everyone. It’s just all of us being able to feed off of each other, and it’s been able to allow us to turn in the right direction.” Awful vs. the run The Panthers have been abysmal against the run, allowing nearly 200 yards per game on the ground over the last seven games. In the last meeting with Tampa Bay, Bucky Irving ran for a career-high 152 yards and a touchdown, so Carolina’s defense has a good idea of what’s coming Sunday. Close calls Mayfield has beaten Carolina three times since joining the Bucs in 2023. All of the meetings have been close, though, with the Panthers losing twice by three points and Tampa Bay settling for three field goals in a 9-0 regular season-ending victory that clinched its third straight NFC South championship last January. “We know them well. They know us well,” Mayfield said. ___ AP Sports Writer Steve Reed in Charlotte, North Carolina, contributed to this report. ___ NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/nfl

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. prosecutors are accusing two senior Syrian officials of overseeing a notorious torture center that abused peaceful protesters, including a 26-year-old American woman who was later believed to have been executed. The indictment was released Monday, two days after a shock rebel offensive overthrew Syrian President Bashar Assad. The U.S., U.N. and others accuse him of widespread human rights abuses in a 13-year battle to crush opposition forces seeking his removal from power. The war, which began as a largely nonviolent popular uprising in 2011, has killed half a million people. The indictment, filed Nov. 18 in federal court in Chicago, is believed to be the U.S. government’s first against what officials say were networks of Assad intelligence services and military branches that detained, tortured and killed thousands of perceived enemies. It names Jamil Hassan, director of the Syrian air force’s intelligence branch, who prosecutors say oversaw a prison and torture center at the Mezzeh air force base in the capital, Damascus, and Abdul Salam Mahmoud, who prosecutors say ran the prison. Victims included Syrians, Americans and dual citizens, the indictment said. The U.S.-based Syrian Emergency Task Force has long pushed federal prosecutors for action on one case, that of 26-year-old American aid worker Layla Shweikani. Arrives a few hours prior to puck drop. The group presented witnesses who testified of Shweikani’s 2016 torture at the prison. Syrian rights groups believe she was later executed at the Saydnaya military prison in the Damascus suburbs. The whereabouts of the two Syrian officials were not immediately known, and the prospects of bringing them to trial were unclear. Assad’s toppling by the rebels over the weekend has scattered his government and left citizens searching prison torture centers around the country for survivors and evidence. Google’s quantum computing lab just achieved a major milestone. On Monday, that its new quantum computing chip, Willow, is capable of performing a computing challenge in less than five minutes — a process Google says would take one of the world’s fastest supercomputers 10 septillion years, or longer than the age of the universe. That’s a big jump from 2019 when Google announced its a mathematical equation in three minutes, as opposed to 10,000 years on a supercomputer. IBM at the time. Along with more powerful performance, researchers also found a way to reduce errors, something Google calls “one of the greatest challenges in quantum computing.” Instead of bits, which represent either 1 or 0, quantum computing uses qubits, at the same time, such as 1, 0, and anything in between. As noted by Google, qubits are prone to errors because they “have a tendency to rapidly exchange information with their environment.” However, Google’s researchers discovered a way to reduce errors by introducing more qubits to a system and were able to correct them in real time. Their findings were . “This historic accomplishment is known in the field as ‘below threshold’ — being able to drive errors down while scaling up the number of qubits,” Google Quantum AI founder Hartmut Neven writes on Google’s blog. “You must demonstrate being below threshold to show real progress on error correction, and this has been an outstanding challenge since was introduced by Peter Shor in 1995.” Introducing Willow, our new state-of-the-art quantum computing chip with a breakthrough that can reduce errors exponentially as we scale up using more qubits, cracking a 30-year challenge in the field. In benchmark tests, Willow solved a standard computation in

Owning a car means different things to different people. It can be a source of pride or a source of frustration for some while others see it as a necessary evil. Furthermore, preferences vary wildly from one to another, although many drive what is both practical and affordable with the hope it is relatively trouble-free. And while that sort of vehicle works for most, there is a certain segment of the population with a preference for driving machines of a bygone era, classic cars. It might be helpful to define a classic and collectible car, and there is a huge swath of gray area here. Hagerty , which insures antique, vintage, and classic automobiles, says a classic car is generally more than 20 years old with a 40-year limit — beyond that it is vintage. However, in common vernacular, a classic car can be considered anything from prior decades. But not all classic cars are collectible. A 1984 Buick Century may be a classic '80s sedan, but few would argue it is collectible. Jay Leno says, "The vehicle should be of technical or historical interest, it should be fun to drive, and it should be pleasant to look at." The Century fails on all accounts. The problem is that many collectible classics are expensive to own and difficult to maintain, but not all of them. For ideas of cars you could own that won't break your bank or your back, check out these collectible classics. One could argue the most famous classic car worldwide is the Volkswagen Type 1, otherwise known as the Beetle. With decades of production ending in 2003 — American sales ceased in 1978 — Beetles that were once ubiquitous on the roadways are still plentiful on the used market, and there are many reasons a Beetle is worth buying . One of the Beetle's primary selling points, and even part of its original design, is easy maintenance and repair. The engine is air-cooled, requiring no water pump, cooling fan, hoses, or radiator, eliminating a common point of failure. The rear-engine design puts the engine and transaxle together and makes the carburetor and ignition easily accessible. Furthermore, they are held in by just four bolts, and an experienced shop can complete removal in just 20 minutes. Everything about the car is basic and simple, and fixing or maintaining everything is low effort. The other part of the Beetle's original design is to be affordable. Factory production ended years ago, but a robust parts supply still exists with countless aftermarket parts available. Additionally, Beetles are popular for custom builds, and suppliers keep a vast supply of modified parts and accessories available. Furthermore, Volkswagen Classic Parts offers OEM parts for a wide range of its air-cooled classics. Since the 1964.5 debut model, the Ford Mustang has been an automotive juggernaut continuing through today. Its popularity has waned little, if any, and it remains appreciated by nearly anyone to encounter one. It is also the most popular classic American car export – more than 20,000 left U.S. ports from 2011 to 2021. But style should not be the sole reason for choosing a classic car. The cost to own it matters, too. Fortunately for classic Mustang lovers, they are easy to maintain and costs won't kill you either. Built before emissions controls, the engines are straightforward and uncluttered. Even back in the '80s, according to a 1984 article from the New York Times , mechanics thought cars of the early 1960s were the easiest for maintenance and repair. They probably think our modern cars are a nightmare. However, with a lack of electronics and digital controls, maintenance schedules are heavier and require several adjustments to components such as points, valves, and carburetors. It's easy maintenance, there's just more of it. One issue in owning one of these Mustangs is that dirt cheap examples probably no longer exist. To buy one in good drivable condition without being pristine can still cost $20,000. But once you make that investment, owning it is cheap. Reproduction and aftermarket parts are abundant and available from dozens of companies. Few, if any, parts are unavailable — complete body shells are in production right now — and continued demand keeps prices reasonable. Although Dodge used the Dart name beginning in 1959, not until 1963 did it affix the badge to a compact and low-cost model built for volume sales to buyers on a budget. This turned out to be a good strategy as it continued to sell until the name was first retired in 1976 (the name was revived for the Alfa Romeo-based Dart in 2013). The debut model only offered the long-lived and robust Slant-6 engine but added a V8 option the next year. Because of this, the Dart has since become more than just an old economy car. With a V8 engine, the Dart becomes a lightweight muscle car, and its clean and uncluttered design has made it a popular choice for racing and hot rods. Dodge also sold a lot of these, and finding one today in decent condition is not difficult, although a '68 Hemi Dart can go for upwards of $300,000. Otherwise, a few thousand can get you something to work on and drive. Plus, whether you pick up a Slant-6 or V8 car, maintenance is a breeze thanks to the uncomplicated engines and uncluttered engine bays. Like other popular classic American cars, the Dart is supported by many suppliers of affordable parts. For example, Andy Bernbaum Auto Parts specializes in Mopar and offers an array of parts, including an impressive supply of new old stock (NOS) parts in their original 50-year-old-packaging. A NOS distributor breaker plate with new points is only $35. The original Camaro introduced in 1967 was and is a great pony car and remains a Chevrolet icon. However, they are highly coveted today and can be extraordinarily expensive, which makes second generation models, built from 1970 to 1981, a more attractive alternative for a classic Camaro. Driving a second-gen Camaro can be a thrilling experience. They can be made incredibly fast, although the handling falls far short compared to a modern Camaro. Regardless, they are relatively comfortable — except for passengers in the rear — and have a decent ride when everything is in working order. Best of all, these cars look inarguably cool. While the later models are hampered by emissions controls, principally the low compression, they can be made to have power and burn clean today. Furthermore, Chevrolet offers a range of licensed restoration parts through authorized distributors, and the Camaro remains as popular as ever, meaning robust parts availability. Being powered by the small-block Chevy V8, maintenance is simple and dirt cheap, and you can even get a powerful crate engine for about $2,000. It matters not whether you are talking about the original Datsun 240Z, its 260Z successor, or the 280Z and 280ZX that closed out the Datsun model line, they're all cool cars. Although it was based on the existing Datsun 510, the new 240Z was built to emulate the Jaguar E-Type while competing against a Porsche or Alfa Romeo. It then became a car with a style and cachet all to itself. 240Z cars came with a stout 2.4-liter straight six fed by a pair of Hitachi carburetors, growing to 2.8-liters and equipped with fuel injection by 1975. They sold very well thanks to their driver-focused interior design and tight handling. Early Z-cars have gained a lot of value, but later models, like the 280ZX, can still be found at reasonable prices. Maintenance on a Z-car should be typical of its contemporary Japanese cars. You may need some specialized knowledge to deal with fuel injected models, but they are generally reliable to begin with. A loyal fanbase ensures parts and accessories abound. Regardless, Z Car Depot is but one company offering a comprehensive catalog of parts for prices similar to any late model car, and companies such as Skillard produce custom accessories, although they can be pricey. Lastly, the catalog from Advance Auto Parts lists most common replacement parts with many in stock. One potential issue, according to some Reddit users, is that some specific parts like molding or trim, either interior or exterior, can be essentially unobtainable. Anyone with a passing fancy about cars and mechanics should recoil in horror at the suggestion that a Jaguar is either cheap or easy to maintain, much less both. On YouTube, the Car Wizard claims the Jaguar V12 to be among the most difficult to repair while Regular Car Reviews says of a 1987 XJ6 that forums recommended only taking them to a Jaguar specialist. So how could a classic Jag be cheap and easy to maintain? It's possible with a small-block Chevy. Jaguar XJ styling is elegant and sporty, a beautiful car designed to offer an engaging driving experience without compromising on comfort. However, the engines could be complex and full of sketchy Lucas electricals. Today, if you want a Jaguar that won't break you, get one with one of the greatest V8 engines ever made, the small-block Chevy . The small-block conversion is moderately cheap and easy to do, and it gains tons of potential power output with legendary Chevy reliability. Jaguar used GM automatic transmission until 1993, so it should also be good to go. Older swaps used Chevy 350 or 327 engines, but a modern LS will work. The best way to cut cost and effort is to buy one already converted. You could find a swapped 1983 XJS Tuned Port 350 in Washington for just $4900 or the pristine 1972 XJ6 LS1 that Bring a Trailer sold for $16,000 with a little luck. The Triumph Spitfire 1500 is the quintessential British sports car. Named for the WWII fighter plane, the Spitfire is a plucky and attractive little roadster built solely to put a smile on your face. Production commenced in 1962, and the final Spitfire 1500 was made from 1974 to 1980. With a 1.5-liter 4-cylinder engine, it was not necessarily fast, but its handling was superb thanks to its go-kart-like dimensions. Spitfires are collectible and still in the affordable range, although prices have been climbing. Engine work is a breeze as the fenders and hood are one piece that flips forward to reveal the entire engine bay. I learned how to repair cars with my 1978 Spitfire by sitting on the exposed tire with full access to the engine, and few jobs could not be done from that position. In my experience, maintenance is no more difficult than other cars, but you will do it way more often. The electrical system is highly problematic, and various seals may go — I used to have to bleed my clutch while seated in the car before I could drive. Websites like British Parts Northwest make sourcing parts so much easier than it was back in 1992, and prices are about the same as late-model cars, such as a new alternator for $119.99. If you have the time and patience to tolerate its quirks, I can say from experience that the sheer joy of driving a Spitfire is worth it. While it is not technically a car, the Chevrolet C/K full-size pickup, aka Square Body, built from 1973 to 1987 – heavy duty versions continued to be offered until 1990 — is both collectible and classic. Built at a time when utility took precedence over style for trucks, they have become sought after partially for the rectangular design. When it debuted, it introduced several improvements to the ride, stability, cabin space, and more. Square Bodies are undeniably collectible. Hemmings reported early in 2024 that rising values have led to certain examples selling for as much as $64,995 with a floor of $7,000. This will make it tough to find the deal for a thousand bucks that was once common. Regardless, should you already own a square body, the most expensive part of it is done. The work of maintaining a Square Body should be among the easiest of any vehicle you own. The engine bay is cavernous, providing enough room to literally climb inside to swap a gasket or pull the distributor. Later models will have the GM HEI distributor, which is extremely reliable, and fuel injection was not introduced until 1987. Otherwise, the Rochester carburetors are well-built. Furthermore, Hemmings says their popularity has kept a better supply of affordable parts than ever, and there are plenty of places to find parts for a classic Chevrolet . One word of advice though is to avoid trucks with the infamous 5.7-liter Oldsmobile diesel V8, if any still exist . When AMC released the Jeep Cherokee, it was a sensation that broke the mold and at least partially started today's domination of the "crossover" SUV. This is because it was built on a monocoque chassis that kept total weight low while remaining strong enough for off-road use and increased ground clearance. It was smaller than similar vehicles of the day and featured computer-aided-design heavily in its development. Most consequentially, its sporty design attracted a wide array of customers who otherwise would not likely buy any Jeep product. With nearly 20 years of production ending in 2003, it is not only barely considered a classic but also extraordinarily long lived, especially with essentially no design changes. The immensely popular 4.0-liter inline-6 AMC engine provided excellent torque and legendary durability. And with the engine design being based on much older AMC architecture, it was no frills and dead simple. Cherokees came with a problematic Renix fuel injection from parent company Renault, but Chrysler's system improved things after it bought the brand . This means for owners of newer Cherokees, pretty much everything is tested technology that works reliably. Furthermore, they are not too far removed from modern vehicles and offer a similar level of refinement and comfort. No matter what year you choose, off-roaders ensure the parts and especially accessories availability is endless. Sites like Quadratec provide seemingly every part you might ever need and then some. There's no doubt that the C8 Corvette is one of the coolest Chevrolets ever . It's also an expensive car that is too technologically complex for a home mechanic, and maintenance is pricey. Edmunds long-term test Corvette cost them $9,500 in its first 25,000 miles. While it is nowhere near as powerful and fast, a much more affordable option that is still cool, can be serviced at home, and won't cost much more than an ordinary sedan is a C3 Corvette, produced from 1968 to 1982. You should know that specific early models can cost you more than $1 million. However, later models can be picked up for less than $10,000 in good drivable condition. These cars started off with a bang as big block models delivered up to 390 horsepower while the fiberglass body kept everything very light. Sadly, after a few years, power took a sharp nosedive that continued to the end in 1982. Regardless of output, these exotically-styled cars are still Chevys with the venerable small-block V8, except for a handful of now-very-expensive big-block cars. They all use familiar Chevrolet components and most service is no different from a pickup. One exception is the 1982 model, which received crossfire injection, a fuel system with too many design limitations. Otherwise, the rest of the bunch makes for easily tuned power with ample aftermarket parts support from dedicated suppliers like Corvette Central . Perhaps it's time to get a Vette and find new roads .None

online casino with free bonus here is no doubt that the dirty war that arises from politics knows no limits and transcends and permeates the spheres that allow it, and one of the most susceptible and obvious are social networks, the personal profiles of the 'protagonists' of certain stories that have their origin in issues beyond their control. These are the characteristics of a case that has scandalized the whole of Colombia, although the matter has many edges A content creator named Aida Victoria Merlano is the protagonist of a delirious story after her mother, congresswoman Aida Merlano, was accused and detained on charges of criminal association, electoral offenses and possession of weapons The mother's political background Merlano made world news when she escaped from El Buen Pastor prison in Bogota in 2019 while attending a dental appointment, and four months later she was recaptured in Maracaibo, Venezuela. She was then prosecuted on charges of false identity, use of false documents and criminal association, and was deported to her country on March 10, 2023. Merlano's case is noteworthy because, since her imprisonment, she claims to have information implicating powerful people in Colombian politics in corruption scandals and crimes, and because her own daughter is accused of having helped her escape. The plot against the influencer And now, the batteries of an alleged plot that would seek to sink the Merlano family are focused on the daughter, Aida Victoria, influencer and content creator well known in the country and with a considerable fan base. Aida Victoria had a romance for a while with another influencer, named Luis Villa, better known as Westcol, whose followers today leaked some alleged photographs in which a woman - who they claim is Aida Victoria - appears holding bestiality with a horse, which would be a gift from her current partner, whose phone number was leaked, as well as that of the influencer. Of course, Merlano came out to deny these images: "Of course it's not me. Look, I love my number, I'm not going to change it, I don't have a problem. They wanted to put me in jail, my mom flew out of a jail, they parked motorcycles in front of me, they put guns on my back, I mean, those things don't scare me." However, the damage is done and this smear campaign has found an echo in different social networks and of course in media around the world.

Use of cash is growing – amid concerns businesses are refusing to accept notes and coinsTitle: Retired Elderly Spends Millions on Over a Dozen Insurance Policies, Family Financial Crisis Sparks AttentionThe administration of Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has come under heavy criticism over its handling of the flood crisis in the four southern border provinces of Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat and Songkhla. Comparisons have been drawn between the delayed response and insufficient support for flood victims in the South and the quicker and more effective management of flooding in the northern provinces in August. The Bangkok Post spoke with political observers about the flood relief efforts and asked if there is a double standard in the government's flood response between the North and South. They were asked to explain whether the government's handling of floods was due to politics, as the ruling Pheu Thai Party is known to have limited support in the South. Sathit Wongnongtoey, a former Democrat MP from Trang, said resentment towards the ruling party among some southern residents is deep-rooted due to the Thaksin Shinawatra administration and his infamous remarks about prioritising provinces that supported his party. Moreover, the Pheu Thai-led government's lack of attention to the southern region has been observed, and the prime minister's apparent lack of urgency in taking action has led some residents to believe the region is being neglected, he said. Asked about the premier's remark that she had assigned her deputies to oversee flood management in the South, Mr Sathit criticised the prime minister and said she should be aware of public expectations and be ready to equally serve all citizens. The former MP said the coalition government should take responsibility for the state of the country because it has not done enough to give people hope. Mr Sathit said the government's popularity will be affected as it has been unable to deliver on its economic promises. Sathit: Deliver economic promises Nipit Intarasombat, a former Democrat MP from Phatthalung, said flood relief efforts are being carried out by state agencies involved, although the prime minister has yet to make a trip to the four southernmost border provinces to inspect the floods. This has left the impression the government is not giving sufficient attention and care to the situation, he said, adding that even if the entire cabinet were to visit, they would not have the same morale-boosting effects as the prime minister's presence. Due to the geography of the region, much of the floodwater in affected areas will have already subsided by the time the prime minister makes a visit and she will not be able to witness the full severity of the flooding, he said. When asked if Ms Paetongtarn has no incentive to visit because Pheu Thai has limited support in the South, he said it is hard to believe the country's leader would neglect the South simply because it is not her party's political stronghold. "I don't want to assume that she is neglecting the South simply for that reason. But the delay has cost her significant political goodwill," he said. Mr Nipit also said he believes Ms Paetongtarn cares about the well-being of the southern people, but she and her close aides lack political experience, which may have led them to miscalculate the situation. Asked if the Pheu Thai Party still has a chance to establish a stronghold in the South, Mr Nipit said it is unlikely to gain significant ground in the three southern border provinces of Pattani, Narathiwat and Yala due to several factors, including the recent flooding and the Tak Bai case in Narathiwat. Nipit: PM cares about people During last year's general election, the Pheu Thai Party did not capture a single seat in Yala, Pattani, Narathiwat and Songkhla. Its coalition partner, the Prachachat Party, then led by Wan Muhamad Noor Matha, won all three seats in Yala. In Pattani, where five seats were available, the Prachachat Party won three seats in Constituency 1, 3 and 5, while the Palang Pracharath Party (PPRP) and the Democrat Party won each in Constituency 2 and Constituency 4, respectively. The five seats in Narathiwat were shared among the PPRP (Constituency 2 and 3), United Thai Nation (UTN) Party (Constituency 1), Bhumjaithai (Constituency 4) and Prachachat Party (Constituency 5). The Democrat Party won the largest share of seats, six out nine, in Songkhla (Constituency 1, 3, 5, 6, 8 and 9) with the UTN winning in Constituency 2, the PPRP in Constituency 4 and the Bhumjaithai Party in Constituency 7. Defending the government, Pheu Thai list-MP Chanin Rungthanakiat said the mobile cabinet meeting in Chiang Mai, which coincided when the South was hit by severe flooding, had been planned weeks in advance and could not be cancelled. The prime minister, he said, decided not to inspect the flooding during its worst phase to avoid adding a burden to local officials who were focusing on relief operations. Even so, several cabinet ministers were assigned to oversee the flood relief efforts, he noted. Mr Chanin stressed the Pheu Thai Party is doing its best to refute the claim the party does not prioritise the southern region. Under the Srettha Thavisin administration, several projects in the South were given support, he said. Chanin: Let local officials work Meanwhile, academics criticise the government for its lack of preparedness in terms of evacuation shelters and failure to decentralise power to enable local authorities to more effectively manage the flood crisis. As a result, the public perceives that only the prime minister's visit and intervention can solve the issue, even if the prime minister's visit to the flood-ravaged area is more of a symbolic gesture rather than a direct solution to the problem. Srisompob Jitpiromsri, a political scientist at Prince of Songkla University, Pattani campus, said that given the size of financial aid and recovery efforts by the Interior Ministry, the government's response in both the North and South is not much different. The cabinet previously approved a change in the criteria for flood compensation payouts. Now, all affected households stand to receive a one-time payment of 9,000 baht. Under the old criteria, households flooded for 30 days or less would receive 5,000 baht, while those inundated for more than 30 days but less than 60 received 7,000 baht. Households flooded for more than 60 days were the only ones given 9,000 baht. Mr Srisompob said provincial authorities, the military, the private sector and various charity and rescue foundations have mobilised their resources to assist flood victims. Media coverage has shown the struggles and plight of the flood-ravaged communities. This has led to comparisons with the role of the government, particularly the prime minister whose visit would have eased tension and provided reassurance to those severely affected by the flooding, he said. "Ms Paetongtarn's comments about her husband being a native of the southern region have not been particularly helpful. "She shouldn't have said it at all under this situation. She should have talked about policies. When her comments are seen as out of place, the issue is dramatised," he said. Early this month, the prime minister defended herself against social media criticism about allegedly neglecting flood-hit southern provinces while touring the northern region, emphasising that providing aid takes priority over making public appearances. She responded that her family had connections to the South through her husband. "How could I neglect the South when my husband and his family are Southerners?" Srisompob: Comments aren't helpful Mr Srisompob said the issue of evacuation shelters has been a pain point for the southern region for a decade and despite having the resources, the government has yet to invest in permanent shelters for disaster relief. "The government needs to rethink its approach to disaster management, especially in the southern region where flooding is exacerbated by rising sea tides," he said. Nuttakorn Vititanon, a political scientist at Chiang Mai University, said the government needs to revamp its disaster warning and emergency response systems to ensure residents are fully informed about risks and adequately cared for. "The flood came at night and no one evacuated in the dark. Moreover, there were no shelters for them. Telling people to evacuate... but to where? So, they stayed home," he said. He was referring to recent flood situations in Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai in August. Mr Nuttakorn said the government appears to be avoiding confronting local communities and resorts that block water drainage and is instead trying to build flood barriers, which is not a sustainable solution. He said the prime minister does not need to visit any flood-hit areas to make instructions if local authorities have the full power to manage the situation. "But the governor doesn't and he can't instruct other agencies like the Department of Royal Irrigation. Remember when a floodgate was broken and the governor was blamed for not coordinating? "The problem was solved after the prime minister's visit. As a result, people have become accustomed to the idea that if they want something fixed, the prime minister must intervene," Mr Nuttakorn said. Nuttakorn: 'No shelters for them'

Reed began by acknowledging the intensity of the match, stating, "It was a tough game against a top-quality team like Arsenal. We knew it was going to be a challenge, but we were prepared for it." Some users have reported sudden price hikes without prior notice, while others have experienced difficulties canceling their memberships or obtaining refunds for unused subscriptions. He shared that they often joke with each other, and one day, they playfully suggested that if Pep ever felt bored or restless in his coaching career, he could come and coach SD Huesca, a small club in the Spanish La Liga.

NoneThe Chicago Blackhawks, current owners of the worst record in the NHL, have fired head coach Luke Richardson. The team , also naming AHL affiliate Rockford IceHogs head coach Anders Sorensen as interim head coach. Blackhawks assistant general manager Mark Eaton will in turn become the interim head coach in Rockford. Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson's explanation of the move: “Today I made the difficult decision to move on from Luke as our head coach. We thank him for his efforts and contributions to the organization and our community,” Davidson said. “As we have begun to take steps forward in our rebuilding process, we felt that the results did not match our expectations for a higher level of execution this season and ultimately came to the decision that a change was necessary. We wish Luke and his family all the best moving forward.” Richardson is the third head coach in the area to be fired during a season this year, joining Matt Eberflus of the Chicago Bears and Pedro Grifol of the Chicago White Sox. He assumed head coaching duties in 2022 after assistant stints with the Ottawa Senators, New York Islanders and Montreal Canadiens. His Blackhawks tenure began with a 26-49-7 record in his first season. A weak roster was easy enough to blame for that performance, but the problem was the team got no better over the next two seasons as it began the Connor Bedard era. The former No. 1 overall pick is still only 19 years old, and Chicago apparently decided it needed a new coach to shepherd what many see as a generational talent. The new coach Sorensen has plenty of experience coaching young players in the AHL and has been part of the Chicago organization since 2018. He was in his fourth season of coaching Rockford, but will now get 56 games to try his hand in the NHL.With A-shares hitting the top trending charts, the super track is set for a rush of limit-up momentum! Just swish a capful for a minute and gargle for 30 seconds after you're done brushing your teeth in the morning and night. Promising review: "I'm actually a dentist who often has bad breath, which is not a good combination. My oral hygiene is great (tongue scraping, brushing, flossing, etc.), but I have allergies and constantly have a bit of post-nasal drip, which contributes to the bad breath. While this stuff isn't perfect, and my breath doesn't stay fresh all day, it is definitely the longest-lasting product I have tried so far. It is the first thing I have tried that still gives me that minty feeling when I breathe deep 4–6 hours after using it. I've found that gargling and using the TheraBreath throat spray in addition to rinsing with this have greatly improved my breath. Will definitely be buying again." — Alex Get a two-pack from Amazon for $14.57 (also available in mild mint ). The kit includes the washer bottle and three disposable tips. Using it is simple: Fill the bottle with your preferred ear cleaning solution, attach the disposable tip, and then spray the cleaner into your ear. This will loosen up wax and cause it to basically just fall right out of your ear! Promising review: "This thing is amazing. It is one of those things that look so simple that you don't think it can possibly do any better than all the other things out there. But it does. After going to a hot spring, my right ear was plugged up. I tried various oily ear cleaners; I went to the doctor who tried a syringe and peroxide; I tried using an ear cleaner bulb; I even tried jumping up and down with my head tilted. Nothing worked. Then, I got this little gadget and on the first try with just warm water, my ear was cleared. The sink looked like someone had puked in it, I am not kidding you. I did not think my ear could possibly hold that much junk in it. I can now hear whispers from across the room. I will be getting more tips for this sucker. And I am going to clean out my ears every month from now on! " — Thomas Wong Get it from Amazon for $29.50 . 36. Or an earwax removal kit made with carbamide peroxide so you can draw out stubborn wax. The results may make ya queasy, but you'll think twice about sticking cotton swabs in your ear again! Promising review: "Folks. Buy it. This is like head lice treatment. If you are looking at it and thinking about it, YOU NEED IT. And this stuff. Is. Awesome. Literally chunks of ear wax came out of my ear holes the SIZE OF CORN KERNELS. Where was this coming from? Why is my body making so much wax? Where was it being stored, because I did NOT think ear canals were that spacious, but apparently there are some storage closets in there or something because HOLY MARY MOTHER OF GOD the ear nuggets are real. My ears feel so squeaky clean! And get this, my hair makes sounds. Like I put it up in a hair tie afterward, and I could HEAR MY HAIR MOVING ON MY HEAD. What is that?! Seriously?! If you also did not know that moving hair creates a sound, you need to buy this product ASAP." — Samantha Get it from Amazon for $6.48 . I remain highly confident in our outlook and ability to achieve our objectives in fiscal 2025." Third Quarter Fiscal 2025 Financial Highlights Recent Business Highlights Financial Outlook For the fourth quarter and full year of fiscal 2025, Couchbase expects: Q4 FY2025 Outlook FY2025 Outlook Total Revenue $52.7-53.5 million $207.2-208.0 million Total ARR $236.5-239.5 million $236.5-239.5 million Non-GAAP Operating Loss $5.7-4.7 million $20.0-19.0 million The guidance provided above is based on several assumptions that are subject to change and many of which are outside our control. If actual results vary from these assumptions, our expectations may change. There can be no assurance that we will achieve these results. Couchbase is not able, at this time, to provide GAAP targets for operating loss for the fourth quarter or full year of fiscal 2025 because of the difficulty of estimating certain items excluded from non-GAAP operating loss that cannot be reasonably predicted, such as charges related to stock-based compensation expense. The effect of these excluded items may be significant. Use of Non-GAAP Financial Measures In addition to our financial information presented in accordance with GAAP, we believe certain non-GAAP financial measures are useful to investors in evaluating our operating performance. We use certain non-GAAP financial measures, collectively, to evaluate our ongoing operations and for internal planning and forecasting purposes. We believe that non-GAAP financial measures, when taken together with the corresponding GAAP financial measures, may be helpful to investors because they provide consistency and comparability with past financial performance and meaningful supplemental information regarding our performance by excluding certain items that may not be indicative of our business, results of operations or outlook. Non-GAAP financial measures are presented for supplemental informational purposes only, have limitations as analytical tools and should not be considered in isolation or as a substitute for financial information presented in accordance with GAAP, and may be different from similarly-titled non-GAAP financial measures used by other companies. In addition, other companies, including companies in our industry, may calculate similarly-titled non-GAAP financial measures differently or may use other measures to evaluate their performance, all of which could reduce the usefulness of our non-GAAP financial measures as tools for comparison. Investors are encouraged to review the related GAAP financial measures and the reconciliation of these non-GAAP financial measures to their most directly comparable GAAP financial measures (provided in the financial statement tables included in this press release), and not to rely on any single financial measure to evaluate our business. Non-GAAP gross profit, non-GAAP gross margin, non-GAAP operating loss, non-GAAP operating margin, non-GAAP net loss and non-GAAP net loss per share: We define these non-GAAP financial measures as their respective GAAP measures, excluding expenses related to stock-based compensation expense, employer payroll taxes on employee stock transactions, restructuring charges and impairment of capitalized internal-use software. We use these non-GAAP financial measures in conjunction with GAAP measures to assess our performance, including in the preparation of our annual operating budget and quarterly forecasts, to evaluate the effectiveness of our business strategies and to communicate with our board of directors concerning our financial performance. For the fourth quarter of fiscal 2024, we excluded the impairment of capitalized internal-use software, a non-cash operating expense, from our non-GAAP results as it is not reflective of ongoing operating results. This impairment charge related to certain previously capitalized internal-use software that we determined would no longer be placed into service. Prior period non-GAAP financial measures have not been adjusted to reflect this change as we did not incur impairment of capitalized internal-use software in any prior period presented. Free cash flow: We define free cash flow as cash used in operating activities less additions to property and equipment, which includes capitalized internal-use software costs. We believe free cash flow is a useful indicator of liquidity that provides our management, board of directors and investors with information about our future ability to generate or use cash to enhance the strength of our balance sheet and further invest in our business and pursue potential strategic initiatives. Please see the reconciliation tables at the end of this press release for the reconciliation of GAAP and non-GAAP results. Key Business Metrics We review a number of operating and financial metrics, including ARR, to evaluate our business, measure our performance, identify trends affecting our business, formulate business plans and make strategic decisions. We define ARR as of a given date as the annualized recurring revenue that we would contractually receive from our customers in the month ending 12 months following such date. Based on historical experience with customers, we assume all contracts will be renewed at the same levels unless we receive notification of non-renewal and are no longer in negotiations prior to the measurement date. For Capella products, ARR in a customer's initial year is calculated as the greater of: (i) initial year contract revenue as described above or (ii) annualized prior 90 days of actual consumption; and ARR for subsequent years is calculated with method (ii). ARR excludes services revenue. Prior to fiscal 2025, ARR excluded on-demand revenue and, for Capella products in a customer's initial year, ARR was calculated solely on the basis of initial year contract revenue. The reason for these changes is to better reflect ARR where usage rates or timing of purchases may be uneven and to better align with how ARR is used to measure the performance of the business. ARR for prior periods has not been adjusted to reflect this change as it is not material to any period previously presented. ARR should be viewed independently of revenue, and does not represent our revenue under GAAP on an annualized basis, as it is an operating metric that can be impacted by contract start and end dates and renewal dates. ARR is not intended to be a replacement for forecasts of revenue. Although we seek to increase ARR as part of our strategy of targeting large enterprise customers, this metric may fluctuate from period to period based on our ability to acquire new customers, expand within our existing customers and consumption dynamics. We believe that ARR is an important indicator of the growth and performance of our business. We also attempt to represent the changes in the underlying business operations by eliminating fluctuations caused by changes in foreign currency exchange rates within the current period. We calculate constant currency growth rates by applying the applicable prior period exchange rates to current period results. Restaurant Brands International Inc. stock rises Monday, outperforms marketMIKEL ARTETA says he will send a scan of Bukayo Saka’s injury to anyone claiming the winger was fit for England duty. Three Lions skipper Harry Kane questioned the commitment of some players after Saka and eight others withdrew from the latest squad. Saka scored for Arsenal on Saturday after recovering from his thigh injury. Boss Arteta said: “We can send them the MRI scan, it’s very simple.” Saka scored one and made one in the 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest. Arteta added: “The communication was very clear between the medical staff of Arsenal and the national team. “He needed time to heal. He has done one training session.” Saka and club-mate Declan Rice were named in Lee Carsley’s original 26-man squad for the Nations League games against Greece and the Republic of Ireland. Both had come off in the 1-1 draw at Chelsea. Arsenal sent Saka for a scan and the results were shared with England’s medical team who said the player should remain with the Gunners for treatment. FOOTBALL FREE BETS AND SIGN UP DEALS Rice pulled out as he was playing with a broken toe. Cole Palmer and Levi Colwill also withdrew, as did Manchester City’s Jack Grealish and Phil Foden, plus Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite — those five all played for their clubs yesterday. Southampton’s Aaron Ramsdale (finger) and Trent Alexander-Arnold (thigh) of Liverpool also called off Three Lions duty. Kane, who was himself carrying a knock, did not hide his disappointment. He had said: “England comes before anything. It comes before club.” Palmer, 22, played 90 minutes before and after the international break. But his Blues boss Enzo Maresca denies Chelsea are pressuring him to put club before country. He snapped: “Absolutely not. I’m not thinking about Harry Kane, or what he’s saying.”

Guwahati: The Assam bypolls have dealt a severe blow to the Congress, which failed to secure a single seat, even losing ground in its traditional bastion of Samaguri in Nagaon district, a Muslim-dominated constituency. The ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the state swept the bypolls, securing victories in all five seats. BJP’s Diplu Ranjan Sarmah defeated Congress candidate and Dhubri MP Rakibul Hussain’s son Tanzil Hussain by over 24,000 votes, ensuring that the seat does not go to the third generation of the Hussain family. Rakibul Hussain had been an MLA from Samaguri for five consecutive terms while his father Nurul Hussain represented it twice. Making a special mention of Samaguri—which saw unprecedented poll-related violence leading to a man’s death—Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said in a social media post that a “constituency with a 65 percent minority population, held by Congress for 25 years”, has now been won by the BJP. He termed it a testament of people’s support to “good governance and development”. We bow in gratitude to the people of Assam 🙏🏽 The NDA’s 5/5 victory in the current by-elections is a resounding testament to Assam’s unwavering support for Adarniya @narendramodi Ji’s vision of good governance and development. A special mention for Samaguri, a constituency with... pic.twitter.com/a7cqaVwvQT — Himanta Biswa Sarma (@himantabiswa) November 23, 2024 Earlier in the day, the BJP took early leads in two constituencies—Dholai and Behali. BJP candidate Diganta Ghatowal won the Behali assembly seat, defeating Congress candidate Jayanta Bora by a margin of 9,051 votes while Nihar Ranjan Das emerged victorious in Dholai, defeating Congress rival Dhrubajyoti Purkayastha, by nearly 9,098 votes. BJP’s regional ally Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) won the Bongaigaon seat with Diptimoyee Choudhury, wife of former eight-time Bongaigaon MLA Phani Bhushan Choudhury defeating Congressman Brajenjit Singha by almost 37,016 votes. The Sidli seat was bagged by another ally of the BJP, the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL), whose candidate Nirmal Kumar Brahma defeated Suddho Basumatary of the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF). The outcome has raised questions on the Congress’s position in the Assam political landscape, even as party leaders maintained they were confident of putting up a good show in the 2026 assembly elections. The NDA’s victory has spelled misery for the Congress which was hoping to retain the Samaguri seat and unseat the BJP from Behali. Political analysts blamed the Congress’s performance on strategic missteps, its failure to prioritise alliances and maintain an inclusive approach, and the “arrogance” of senior Congress leaders. Ahead of the bypolls, the Asom Sonmilito Morcha (ASOM), the 16-party opposition alliance in the state, disintegrated after Congress decided to field its own candidate in Behali, breaking an agreement to allot the seat to CPI(ML). Also Read: Amid spat with Himanta over big-ticket projects, Priyank Kharge asks: ‘Is batting for own state anti-Assam?’ The Behali constituency saw a four-cornered contest, with Lakhikanta Kurmi of the CPI(ML) and Ananta Gogoi of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) both failing to save their deposits. The seat was previously held by Ranjit Dutta, who was elected to the Lok Sabha from the Sonitour parliamentary constituency. However, even as the Congress failed to win any seat, it managed to reduce the BJP’s victory margin in Behali, faintly signalling that the Opposition is still capable of mounting some resistance. Addressing media persons in Guwahati, Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi said if they had more time for campaigning, the results could have been better. “We performed well in Dholai and Behali, and tried holding fort in Samaguri. We had no representatives at Dholai and Behali earlier, but we put up a good fight. I view the Behali outcome as a draw between the Congress and BJP. Every election, we would face defeat in Behali by around 24-25,000 votes, but this time we have brought it down to about 9,000 votes,” added Gogoi. Asked if there was any arrogance on the part of senior Congress leaders as alleged by other parties, Mayur Bora, author and social commentator said that besides strategic missteps, it (arrogance of senior party members) too must have proved annoying for other leaders after a certain point. “He (Gaurav Gogoi) is the only one who is not under any cloud for covert connection with the ruling party. But he has an arrogant streak, which may be difficult to take others along,” said Bora. Raijor Dal leader and Sivsagar legislator Akhil Gogoi told reporters that it was the arrogance of some party leaders that cost the Congress dearly, adding that chances look bleak for opposition parties to unite for 2026 unless Congress provides an explanation for its dismissive attitude towards regional alliances. “Congress should forget its arrogance. After performing well in Lok Sabha elections, they thought they were undisputed and no longer need anyone. Gaurav Gogoi should sacrifice his arrogance. Congress president Bhupen Borah should answer why he had invited us to meetings at a hotel when his colleague (Gaurav Gogoi) dismissed them as futile endeavours. We will not talk to the Congress unless Borah explains,” said Akhil Gogoi. Congress leader Dilip Baruah, who was refused a ticket from Behali, told a local channel that the division of votes between opposition parties, including CPI(M) and AAP, contributed to the defeat. “We will prepare for 2026. If we had been united — CPI(ML) that won 5,000 votes and AAP with 1,100 — we could have stayed ahead. We will now contemplate if there’s a need for all opposition parties to get back together for 2026,” said Baruah. He added: “I wanted to contest in 2011, but did not get a ticket. Congress leader Pallab Lochan Das, who is now with BJP, had won that time. If I was nominated instead of Jayanta Bora this time, I would have secured more votes. It’s the people who decide, not your money or power.” Baruah however said that Gaurav Gogoi, who was put in charge of Behali, took them all together to oversee preparations in the constituency. The elections were held in the five assembly constituencies on 13 November as these seats fell vacant following the election of the MLAs to the Lok Sabha earlier this year. The BJP contested three seats of Behali, Samaguri, and Dholai, while its alliance partners AGP and UPPL contested Bongaigaon and Sidli (ST) respectively. The Congress contested all the five constituencies. Meanwhile, after Tanzil Hussain’s defeat in Samaguri constituency, MP Rakibul Hussain said his son has “lost to Himanta Biswa Sarma”. He further alleged that the BJP resorted to rigging of votes to win. “The way they rigged over 22,000 votes, we knew winning in Samaguri was impossible. Those from the minority population who are working in other states like Kerala have been shown to vote. The BJP had resorted to threatening people and using muscle power. But we accept this verdict and congratulate the winning candidate,” Rakibul told media persons in Nagaon. He also attributed the defeat to delimitation and redrawing of boundaries for the Nagaon parliamentary constituency that changed the political dynamics for Samaguri. “Delimitation has affected us — those in Koliabor and Berhampur — might no longer consider themselves part of Samaguri anymore to cast their votes. But we still managed to take a lead. It was Himanta Biswa Sarma who said that he didn’t need Miya votes. We want to be with everyone.” A BJP worker in Nagaon however alleged that earlier, people in Samaguri had voted under threat from Rakibul Hussain. Social commentator Mayur Bora said that BJP’s victory in Samaguri was not a fluke, and not even surprising as the party had tried very hard and astutely to win from the constituency. “Psychology of minority voters is critical. They tend to vote as a group,” he said. Referring to Lok Sabha elections in Dhubri where Rakibul Hussain had won 14.71 lakh votes, defeating All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) chief and former MP Badruddin Ajmal, Bora outlined the unpredictability of representing a minority-dominated constituency and how people possibly chose to vote against family-centric politics this time. “Look what happened in Dhubri in June — Rakibul Hussain was the beneficiary then. Now his son is the loser.” Predicting chances for a united opposition in next year’s Assam assembly elections, Bora said: “It is not insurmountable. If people genuinely bury their differences, egos and more importantly, vested interests.” Gaurav Gogoi expressed hope for the Congress in the future while analysing the poll outcome in Behali. “There is momentum for the party to grow further in North Assam, and that will continue to be my focus...,” he wrote on X. I take full responsibility for the defeat of the Congress party in Behali. Despite having no MLAs or ground support in the region, we have significantly increased the Congress vote share in a traditional BJP seat. We have reduced the difference between BJP and Congress by more... — Gaurav Gogoi (@GauravGogoiAsm) November 23, 2024 (Edited by Gitanjali Das) Also Read: 9 booked in Assam’s Nagaon for pelting stones at a tigress, may have caused damage to one eye Save my name, email, and website in this browser for the next time I comment. SIOUX FALLS — As the Gayville -Volin Raiders fought toward the program’s first-ever state tournament victory, a 25-19, 25-23, 20-25, 25-16 victory over Kadoka in the seventh place match of the South Dakota State Volleyball Tournament on Saturday in Sioux Falls, Raider head coach Allison Jones made sure her team took time to celebrate what they had accomplished so far. Jones used two of her allotted time-outs to celebrate career milestones, the 1,000 th career assist for senior Britton Scheetz and the 1,0 00 th career dig for sophomore Jolie Westrum , both reached during Saturday’s match. In both time-outs, Jones gathered her team on the edge of the floor for a photo before resuming the normal time-out activities. “It’s just how we’ve always done it,” Jones said of the in-match celebrations, noting they did the same for other players during the season. “It gives them a special moment for themselves.” Maia Achen finished with 18 kills, 26 digs and four assisted blocks for Gayville -Volin, which finished with a 30-6 record. Paisley Dimmer had 11 kills. Kayden Bye posted nine kills and eight blocks (one solo). Bye, a 5-8 junior middle blocker, had success against a taller Kadoka front row. “Their defense liked to go back, so I was using over the block tips a lot. Sometimes the corners would s coot up, so the deep corners were open,” she said. “ So, we were able to pick at those. Once they corrected, there were other things open.” Also for the Raiders, Scheetz finished with 37 assists and 10 digs. Taylor Hoxeng had 35 digs. Jolie Westrum posted 26 digs. Ayla Dimmer added 10 digs in the victory. Bella Williams led Kadoka (31-6) with 18 kills and 15 digs. Kassidee Williams posted 36 assists and 11 digs. Madisyn Nemecek posted nine kills and 20 digs. Makaylan Bonenberger had 15 digs and Shaylee Porch added 11 digs for the K ougars . The Raiders, coming off back-to-back tough losses to start the tournament, needed to “come together” before their final match of the season. “We just needed to bond, and I needed to reconnect with my hitters," Scheetz said. “We needed to make sure everyone was in a positive mood.” The Raiders got off to a strong start, scoring the first four points of the match and not allowing Kadoka to score more than two straight points in the opening stanza. The Kougars built an early lead and led 15-12 before the Raiders ran off six straight points. Achen had two kills in the 6-0 run, then added three more kills — along with two from Paisley Dimmer — as the Raiders claimed a two-set lead. Gayville -Volin led 7-4 in the third set before a 4-0 Kougar run pulled Kadoka off the mat. With the third set tied at 20-20, Kadoka ran off five straight points to claim the set. Bella Williams had the final two kills to keep the Kougars alive. Kadoka jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the fourth set, but a 12-2 Raider run put the set — and the match — out of reach. “We found our fight,” Scheetz said. The match marked the final high school match for Scheetz, defensive specialist Ayla Dimmer and right side/middle hitter Teres a Stockman. “It’s bittersweet,” Scheetz said. “I love these girls, playing with them. I love the fight that they all have, and I’ll miss it. “But it was a good year.” Of the eight players who saw the floor for the Raiders Saturday, six will return next season. “It feels really good,” Bye said. “Last year we got here. This year we did, and we got a win. Hopefully we can keep this up and get back again next year.” Follow @ JCimburek on Threads and BlueSky.NMSU_Early 30 interception return (Montano kick), 12:46. Glasgow southside cafe hits the market just six months after openingConor McGregor’s name and likeness are being dropped from Proper No. Twelve Irish Whiskey amid calls for boycotts of the Irish sports star after a jury found last week that he assaulted Nikita Hand in Dublin in 2018 . Proximo Spirits, the company that now owns Proper No. Twelve Irish Whiskey, said on Tuesday that McGregor's name and likeness will no longer be associated with the brand. McGregor launched the Irish whiskey brand in 2018, but sold his majority stake in it to Proximo in 2021 for a reported $600 million. “Since 2021, Proximo Spirits has been the 100 percent owner of Proper No. Twelve Irish Whiskey,” the company said in a statement on Tuesday. “Going forward, we do not plan to use Mr. McGregor’s name and likeness in the marketing of the brand.” Sign up to IrishCentral's newsletter to stay up-to-date with everything Irish! As of Tuesday evening, McGregor's name or likeness is not mentioned on Proximo's landing page for its brand Proper No. Twelve’s Triple Distilled Irish Whiskey. "Conor McGregor, Audie Attar, Ken Austin, and Proximo Spirits launched Proper No. Twelve in September 2018. The brand experienced one of the most successful launches in the wine & spirits category, selling 200,000 cases in its first six months on the market." Authorities in the United States have reviewed airport security footage as they continue to investigate how a woman sneaked on board a Delta Air Lines flight from New York to Paris without a ticket last Tuesday –– one of the busiest travel days of the year. Inspectors from the Transportation Security Administration are preparing a civil case against the stowaway after reviewing airport security video from inside John F. Kennedy International Airport, agency spokesperson Alexa Lopez told CNN. The stowaway initially slipped past facial recognition ID scanners at the TSA checkpoint undetected, the TSA said, though she did go through baggage screening where officers found two bottles of water. “The TSA will open civil cases against passengers when there’s evidence that procedures may have been violated,” Lopez said. The TSA cannot bring criminal charges, though it can refer them to the Justice Department. A Paris airport official identified the female stowaway as a 57-year-old Russian national. The passenger – whom French officials are trying to return to the US – remains in custody in France. She was scheduled to take a return flight to the United States Saturday afternoon but French authorities had to remove her from the aircraft after she started screaming, according to the Paris airport official. “The pilot refused to take her because she was too unruly,” the official told CNN Monday. French border police brought the passenger back to a waiting zone at Charles de Gaulle Airport for people awaiting deportation. She can be held in the zone, known as ZAPI, for up to 20 days. French authorities want her to return to the United States of her own volition. But failing that, they will force her to go back with an escort, in formal custody. Since arriving in Paris, she has been evaluated by a doctor. Inspectors from the TSA are planning to meet the stowaway at JFK when she returns to the States, Lopez said. The TSA says the incident shows why the agency is seeking funding for electronic gates that use facial recognition and open and allow access to baggage screening only once a passenger passes the identification screening. What remains a mystery is how the person was able to slip past Delta gate agents at JFK. A source familiar with the incident said the stowaway was able to evade detection by the flight crew on the plane because the flight was not full, though passengers told CNN the woman was able to hide by moving between bathrooms. Delta has not said how she was able to make it onto the plane once she made it past the TSA checkpoint. The airline says it “is conducting an exhaustive investigation of what may have occurred,” but declined further comment. Incidents like these do happen, but not frequently, according to former Department of Homeland Security official Keith Jeffries, who was federal security director when he left DHS in 2022. In about 20 years working with DHS and the TSA, Jeffries estimated, he saw similar situations play out about 30 times. Airlines are adding more technology to their boarding process to prevent these lapses, said Jeffries, now vice president of K2 Security Screening Group, an aviation security firm. But things still happen, especially during peak travel periods. The public can also help keep the skies safe during the busy travel season, he said. “As simplistic as it sounds, if you see something, say something,” Jeffries said. “One of the most important layers of the entire security process is the public themselves.” CNN’s Mark Morales and Holmes Lybrand contributed to this report.Middle East latest: Israel bombs 100s of sites in Syria as army pushes into border zone

Indian Register of Shipping and Cochin Shipyard Collaborate on Indigenous Autonomous Vessel Project ‘SWAYAT’Paul Keating has emerged as a significant winner from the sale of Boost Mobile, with the former prime minister set to pocket at least $40 million from the telco tie-up. Telstra on Monday announced it would acquire Boost Mobile in a deal understood to be worth just under $140 million in cash, a move that will enable Telstra to spruik low-cost prepaid plans amid an ongoing cost-of-living crunch. Former prime minister Paul Keating was the initial funder of Boost Mobile. Credit: Louie Douvis Keating holds a 29 per cent stake in Boost Mobile and remains one of the company’s largest shareholders. He was the sole investor when he co-founded the business in 2000 with entrepreneur Peter Adderton, who retains a 32 per cent stake. Other shareholders include skateboarder Peter Hill and his brother Stephen Hill, as well as former Boost Mobile chief executive Paul O’Neile. The acquisition, expected to be completed this month, will see Boost Mobile employees integrated into Telstra and no changes for Boost’s thousands of prepaid customers. The companies had been partnered for 13 years, with Telstra responsible for most of the operational parts of Boost’s business, including network access and customer service, while Boost was responsible for branding and marketing. “Boost Mobile has been a fantastic partner of Telstra, this acquisition cements just how much we value the Boost brand,” Telstra executive Brad Whitcomb said. Boost Mobile chairman Peter Adderton owns about a third of the company he founded with Keating in 2000. “We know Boost branded products are a fantastic option for those seeking more affordable mobile connectivity, and we are committed to providing that choice in the market.” Boost Mobile chairman Peter Adderton, who owned about a third of the company he founded in 2000, said the acquisition was a natural evolution for his brand. “I am excited to see how the brand will continue to grow under Telstra’s ownership,” he said. “The team at Boost are the best in the business and I wish them all well on the next part of Boost Mobile’s journey.” More to come The Business Briefing newsletter delivers major stories, exclusive coverage and expert opinion. An unreleased $6.2-million transportation study obtained by the Star reveals more Torontonians cycle than Premier Doug Ford has claimed in his crusade to restrict . The Transportation Tomorrow Survey found 3.1 per cent of Toronto residents commute to work by bicycle each morning, triple the “one per cent” Ford often cites. That number jumps to 3.6 per cent of those who reported using their bikes “all day” in a city of where 164,806 daily cycling trips were made. While that’s have argued in opposing Ford’s removal of bike lanes on Yonge Street, and University Avenue, bicycle use has been steadily climbing since the 2006 survey. Testifying , Jacquelyn Hayward, director of transportation planning, design and management at the City of Toronto, said the study should be made public to better inform the debate around bike lanes. The decision to install temporary bike lanes during COVID — most became permanent — seemed to Asked at committee by Liberal MPP Mary-Margaret McMahon (Beaches-East York) if it would “be helpful if the government released the Transportation Tomorrow Survey,” the high-ranking municipal bureaucrat nodded. “Yes. We have access to it as a partner in it and we believe that it should be available for public consumption and planning,” said Hayward, who spoke out against the province’s legislation and questioned the use of “very old data” by the government. “The Transportation Tomorrow Survey 2022 is available and it demonstrates numbers that are very different from that,” she said, adding in some parts of the city “closer to 10” per cent cycle. “In wards that are served by the bike lanes in question, the numbers are staggering and higher.” As first reported by the Star, city officials used the data in the provincial study in a to council earlier this month. Under the new law, which Monday, municipalities must seek provincial approval for any that remove vehicular lanes. Intended to reduce traffic gridlock, critics have warned it will make cycling less safe because existing Toronto infrastructure will also be removed. The Progressive Conservatives have used their parliamentary majority to ram through a The — co-ordinated by the Ministry of Transportation in partnership with 24 municipalities and transit agencies, including the City of Toronto, the TTC and Metrolinx — is normally conducted every five years and involves thousands of interviews. Done in fall 2022 and spring 2023, it was supposed to be made public last month, but has remained under wraps as Ford’s Progressive Conservatives pushed through controversial measures designed to ease congestion. “No decision is sought for the release given it is regular ministry business to release the results once the survey is complete,” says the 38-page “preliminary findings draft” PowerPoint deck obtained by the Star. “The deck is to provide awareness of the findings in advance of the release planned for December 13, 2024,” says the internal document dated Nov. 22. It found “an increase in walking and cycling trips was observed, especially in Toronto” since the last survey that was done in 2016. (The scheduled 2021 survey was delayed a year by the COVID-19 pandemic.) Asked about mode of transportation in the “AM Peak,” 3.1 per cent of people in Toronto aged 11 and up commuted by bicycle while 13 per cent walked. Some 46 per cent of Torontonians drove their own cars or trucks in the morning with another 11 per cent being passengers in private vehicles and 25 per cent took public transit. The numbers change slightly when surveyed about “all day” modes of transportation: 3.6 per cent rode bikes, 50 per cent drove, 12 per cent were passengers, 22 per cent took transit, and 10 per cent walked. For the rest of the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area, 66 per cent drove their own vehicles in the morning with another 13 per cent passengers, eight per cent walked, six per cent took transit and one per cent cycled. Asked about “all day” transportation use, 70 per cent drove, 16 per cent were passengers, five per cent walked, five per cent took transit and 0.9 per cent used bicycles. In the rest of the Greater Golden Horseshoe — including Guelph, Niagara Region, Barrie and Peterborough — 72 per cent drove their own vehicles in the morning with another 10 per cent being passengers, seven per cent walked, two per cent took transit and 1.4 per cent cycled. For “all day” trips in the exurban area, 75 per cent drove, 14 per cent were passengers, four per cent walked, two per cent took transit and 1.3 per cent rode bikes. Toronto had by far the most daily cycling trips of any municipality in the survey with 164,806, followed by Waterloo with 20,995, 18,822 in Hamilton, 17,047 in Peel, 14,568 in York, and 11,959 in Halton. That compares to 52,171 daily users in Toronto of paid ride share services like Uber. In Peel, there were 14,426 daily ride share users with York at 6,066, Halton at 4,221, and Durham at 3,595. Under the heading “Key Take Aways for 2022 TTS,” the PowerPoint deck concludes “the automobile remains the dominant mode of transportation.” That on main arteries in a bid to tackle gridlock that the Toronto Region Board of Trade has estimated costs the economy $11 billion annually. “One per cent of the population cannot take up 50 per cent of the roads,” the premier said Monday in Burlington. But the survey found cycling is continuing to grow in popularity — one per cent of Torontonians did their morning commute by bike in 2006, 1.6 per cent in 2011, 2.5 per cent in 2016 and 3.1 per cent in 2022. Similarly, 1.1 per cent of Torontonians reported “all day” riding trips in the 2006 study, 1.9 per cent in 2011, 2.7 per cent in 2016 and 3.6 per cent in 2022. The City of Toronto estimates it will take $48 million to dismantle 22 kilometres of bike lanes that cost $27 million to install, a tally Ford has dismissed as inflated “hogwash.” against any lawsuits if someone is killed or injured where a bike lane has been removed.

Google released its annual “Year in Search” on Tuesday, rounding up the top trending queries entered into its namesake search engine in 2024. The results show terms that saw the highest spike in traffic compared to last year — ranging from key news events, notably global elections, to the most popular songs, athletes and unforgettable pop-culture moments that people looked up worldwide. Sports — particularly soccer and cricket — dominated Google's overall trending searches in 2024. Copa América topped those search trends globally, followed by the UEFA European Championship and ICC Men's T20 World Cup. Meanwhile, the U.S. election led news-specific searches worldwide. Queries about excessive heat and this year's Olympic Games followed. U.S. President-elect Donald Trump topped searches in Google's people category this year — followed by Catherine, Princess of Wales, U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris and Algerian boxer Imane Khelif , who also led athlete-specific searches. Meanwhile, the late Liam Payne, Toby Keith and O.J. Simpson led search trends among notable individuals who died in 2024. In the world of entertainment, Disney and Pixar's “Inside Out 2” was the top trending movie of the year, while Netflix's “Baby Reindeer” led TV show trends. And Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us” dominated song trends. That's just the tip of the iceberg. Queries for the Olympic village's chocolate muffin, made famous by Norwegian swimmer Henrik Christiansen over the summer games, led Google's global recipe trends this year. The New York Times' “Connections” puzzle topped game searches. And in the U.S., country-specific data shows, many people asked Google about online trends like the word “demure” and “ mob wife aesthetic.” You can find more country-specific lists, and trends from years past, through Google’s “Year in Search” data published online.
