Between the earlier this year, as well as the results of the 2024 US presidential election – a large group of people have been choosing to leave X. But, they’re not leaving for Meta’s Threads, the more popular X alternative at the time – they’re going for Bluesky instead. Rise of Bluesky For one reason or another, people are picking Bluesky over Threads. It could be the fact that they prefer the look and feel of Bluesky, or just that they don’t want to support another social media platform owned by Meta and Mark Zuckerberg. Either way, the sudden rise of Bluesky is seemingly scaring Meta. There’s been a number of Twitter alternatives that people have tried using since Elon Musk’s acquisition of Twitter in October 2022, including Mastodon, Pebble (formerly T2), Bluesky, Threads, Hive Social, Post.news, and even Tumblr. Between all of those options, a number of them either completely shut down, or the companies failed to gain popularity – and for a solid while, it was looking like Threads was going to be the only viable alternative. Until now. Threads had grown to over 200 million users since its launch in July 2023, and Meta probably thought they had this whole “Twitter alternative” game in the bag. While Threads was a viable social media platform, the company definitely hadn’t put a lot of effort into actually catering to it’s users. For example, I’ve personally never been a fan of how Threads doesn’t allow you to switch your default feed from For You to Following. Sure, X does the same thing – but Threads also hid the feed switcher by default, requiring users to tap on the Threads logo at the top to present that menu. They really wanted you to use For You. Now, both of those things aren’t the case, with the feed switcher being displayed prominently, and the option to set Following as your default feed. These are all small features that Threads could’ve added at any moment, but chose not to. Now, these features are all here, probably to make the platform more appealing. Copying Bluesky features In recent weeks, Threads has also copied a number of Bluesky features, including custom feeds and starter packs. Custom feeds allow you to create a feed of a specific group of people, allowing you to easily track one topic or community. Starter packs allow you to easily follow a group of people who all have in common. These two features were key to Bluesky’s growth, and made it far easier to curate an engaging feed. Odisha’s Senior BJP Leader Jaynarayan Mishra Accuses Party Of Sidelining HimNational Conference (NC) MP Aga Syed Ruhullah was on Tuesday (December 24, 2024) criticised by his party colleague, Salman Sagar, for joining a protest along with Opposition parties over the current reservation policy in Jammu and Kashmir . The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) , on the other hand, warned against tampering with the policy, which reserves up to 70% seats for different marginalised communities, and only 30% for aspirants in the Open Merit category. A day after Mr. Ruhullah sat outside the Chief Minister’s residence in Srinagar with protesting students, Mr. Sagar said it was “an individual action rather than the party’s policy”. “It (the protest) was not an NC initiative and does not represent the party’s stance. NC’s protests are only organised under the instructions of top leaders like Dr. Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah ,” the MLA from the Hazratbal Assembly constituency said. Mr. Sagar accused Mr. Ruhullah of joining the party’s adversaries and thus “inadvertently strengthening the position of rival political groups like the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)“. “It was a gathering of our enemies and, unfortunately, one of our MPs allowed them a stage to exploit the situation,” Mr. Sagar said. He said the protest outside the Chief Minister’s residence had “only created unnecessary drama”. “We won’t allow political point-scoring on this issue. Such actions could damage the party’s credibility. Ruhullah sahib is a big man with a significant mandate, having been an MLA and MP multiple times, but he is connected to the party and cannot be bigger than the party. No MLA, Minister, or even the Chief Minister is bigger than the party,” Mr. Sagar said. In a veiled retort, Mr. Ruhullah took to social media platform X. Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, on Saturday, alleged a grand plan by his predecessor, Godwin Obaseki, some members of the opposition parties of plotting a media trial to discredit his victory in the 21 September governorship election. This is contained in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua in Benin City. The governor was reacting to the claim by former Aviation Minister Osita Chidoka that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) manipulated the election in favour of the Edo Governor. Okpebholo who expressed dismay with the media for providing the platform for Chidoka to peddle what it described as the latest drama of Osita Chidoka said, “We are aware that former Governor Godwin Obaseki and some PDP leaders in Edo State, and their supporters had a meeting during the week, with online merchants and editors of leading newspapers; where it was decided that media trial should be the pattern of their current engagement to discredit the very credible Edo election of 21st September. “The truth of the matter is that INEC conducted a very free and fair, violence-free election acknowledged by domestic observers in their various reports. The PDP leadership in Edo state in its review and report, also acknowledged that APC won the election. “The latest drama of Osita Chidoka amounts to merely beating about the bush, trying to rake up mud against the election. The PDP should allow the tribunal do its job in line with established procedures.” He accused the media of leading the gang up, saying that, “The idea of deploying the services of editors and senior journalists with a marching order to discredit the administration of Governor Monday Okpebholo by all means possible is outlandish and self-serving. “Their identities are now known, and will be made public in the coming days.
