The 55-year-old Canadian, who guided Boston to an NHL record for wins and points in a season but never got past the second round of the playoffs, replaced Drew Bannister, who was fired after a 9-12-1 start by the Blues this season. An 8-9-3 start this season by the Bruins led to Montgomery's firing, but he signed a five-year contract with the Blues. "This was more an opportunity to get someone of Jim's caliber more than anything else," Blues president of hockey operations Doug Armstrong said. "We've had to deal with our situations off the ice with injuries and everyone deals with that, but this decision was based 100% on having someone of Jim's caliber becoming available when I didn't know that was going to happen." Montgomery is 180-84-33 as an NHL coach, having guided Dallas for two seasons and Boston for just over two campaigns, going 120-41-23 with the Bruins. In the 2022-23 season, the Bruins won an NHL record 65 games and compiled a record 135 points under Montgomery, who was named the NHL's Coach of the Year, but were upset by Florida in the first round of the playoffs. Boston also lost to the eventual 2024 Stanley Cup champions in last year's playoffs. Montgomery was dropped by the Bruins last Tuesday and replaced by Joe Sacco. "He certainly has a very positive demeanour, works well with the top players in the organizations that he's been with," Armstrong said. "He has a wealth of experience and he's at the prime of his coaching career." The Blues, who won the 2019 Stanley Cup, have missed the playoffs the past two seasons. ANDERSON TOWNSHIP, Ohio -- Bengals quarterback 's home was broken into during Monday night's game against the Cowboys in the latest home burglary of a pro athlete in the U.S., authorities said Tuesday. No one was injured in the break-in, but the home was ransacked, according to a report provided by the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office. Deputies weren't immediately able to determine what items were stolen. A person who is employed by Burrow arrived at the Anderson Township home Monday night to find a shattered bedroom window and the home in disarray. The person called their mother, and then 911 was contacted, according to the report. Deputies reached out to neighbors in an attempt to piece together surveillance footage. "Our investigators are exploring every avenue," public information officer Kyla Woods said. The homes of Chiefs stars and were broken into in October. In the NBA, Milwaukee Bucks forward Bobby Portis had his home broken into Nov. 2, and Minnesota Timberwolves guard Mike Conley's home was burglarized on Sept. 15 while he was at a game. Portis had offered a $40,000 reward for information. The NFL and NBA issued security alerts to players after those break-ins, urging them to take additional precautions to secure their homes. In league memos previously obtained by The Associated Press, the NFL said homes of professional athletes across multiple sports have become "increasingly targeted for burglaries by organized and skilled groups." The NBA revealed that the FBI has connected some burglaries to "transnational South American Theft Groups" that are "reportedly well-organized, sophisticated rings that incorporate advanced techniques and technologies, including pre-surveillance, drones, and signal jamming devices." Some of the burglary groups have conducted extensive surveillance on targets, including attempted home deliveries and posing as grounds maintenance or joggers in the neighborhood, according to officials.Mangione charged in Pa.

MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay (AP) — Uruguayans on Sunday voted in the second round of the country's presidential election , with the conservative governing party and the left-leaning coalition locked in a close runoff after failing to win an outright majority in last month’s vote . The closing of polls started a countdown to the announcement of official results as independent polling firms were preparing to release so-called quick counts. Depending on how tight the vote turns out to be, electoral officials may not call the race for days — as happened in the contentious 2019 runoff that brought center-right President Luis Lacalle Pou to office and ended 15 years of rule by Uruguay’s left-leaning Broad Front. Uruguay's staid election has turned into a hard-fought race between Álvaro Delgado, the incumbent party’s candidate who won 27% in the first round of voting on Oct. 27, and Yamandú Orsi from the Broad Front, who took 44% of the vote in the first round. But other conservative parties that make up the government coalition — in particular, the Colorado Party — notched 20% of the vote collectively, enough to give Delgado an edge over his challenger. Congress ended up evenly split in the October vote. Most polls have shown a virtual tie between Delgado and Orsi, with nearly 10% of Uruguayan voters undecided even at this late stage. Many said they believed turnout would be low if voting weren't compulsory in the country. “Neither candidate convinced me and I feel that there are many in my same situation," said Vanesa Gelezoglo, 31, in the capital, Montevideo, adding she would make up her mind at “the last minute.” Analysts say the candidates' lackluster campaigns and broad consensus on key issues have generated extraordinary indecision and apathy in an election dominated by discussions about social spending and concerns over income inequality but largely free of the anti-establishment rage that has vaulted populist outsiders to power elsewhere . “The question of whether Frente Amplio (the Broad Front) raises taxes is not an existential question, unlike what we saw in the U.S. with Trump and Kamala framing each other as threats to democracy," said Nicolás Saldías, a Latin America and Caribbean senior analyst for the London-based Economist Intelligence Unit. “That doesn't exist in Uruguay.” Both candidates are also appealing to voter angst over a surge in violent crime that has shaken a nation long regarded as one of the region’s safest, with Delgado promising tough-on-crime policies and Orsi advocating a more community-oriented approach. Delgado, 55, a rural veterinarian with a long career in the National Party, campaigned on a vow to continue the legacy of current President Lacalle Pou — in some ways making the election into a referendum on his leadership. He campaigned under the slogan “re-elect a good government." While a string of corruption scandals rattled Lacalle Pou's government last year, the president — who constitutionally cannot run for a second consecutive term — now enjoys high approval ratings and a strong economy expected to grow 3.2% this year, according to the International Monetary Fund. Inflation has also eased in recent months, boosting his coalition. Delgado served most recently as Secretary of the Presidency for Lacalle Pou and promises to pursue his predecessor's pro-business policies. He would continue pushing for a trade deal with China that has raised hackles in Mercosur, an alliance of South American countries promoting regional commerce. "We have to give the government coalition a chance to consolidate its proposals,” said Ramiro Pérez, a street vendor voting for Delgado on Sunday. Orsi, 57, a former history teacher and two-time mayor from a working-class background, is widely seen as the political heir to iconic former President José “Pepe” Mujica , an ex-Marxist guerilla who raised Uruguay's international profile as one of the region's most socially liberal and environmentally sustainable nations during his 2010-2015 term. His Broad Front coalition oversaw the legalization of abortion, same-sex marriage and the sale of marijuana in the small South American nation of 3.4 million people. “He's my candidate, not only for my sake but also for my children's,” Yeny Varone, a nurse, said of Orsi. “In the future they'll have better working conditions, health and salaries.” Mujica, now 89 and recovering from esophageal cancer , was among the first to cast his ballot after polls opened. “Uruguay is a small country, but it has earned recognition for being stable, for having a citizenry that respects institutional formalities,” he told reporters from his local polling station. “This is no small feat.” While promising to forge a “new left” in Uruguay, Orsi plans no dramatic changes. He proposes tax incentives to lure investment and social security reforms that would lower the retirement age but fall short of a radical overhaul sought by Uruguay's unions. The contentious plebiscite on whether to boost pension payouts failed to pass in October, with Uruguayans rejecting generous pensions in favor of fiscal constraint. Both candidates pledged full cooperation with each other if elected. “I want (Orsi) to know that my idea is to form a government of national unity,” Delgado told reporters after casting his vote in the capital's upscale Pocitos neighborhood. He said that if he won, he and Orsi would chat on Monday over some yerba mate, the traditional herbal drink beloved by Uruguayans. Orsi similarly pledged a smooth and respectful transition of power, describing Sunday's democratic exercise as “an incredible experience" as he voted in Canelones, the sprawling town of beaches and cattle ranches just north of Montevideo where he served as mayor for a decade. “The essence of politics is agreements,” he said. “You never end up completely satisfied.” ___ Associated Press writer Isabel DeBre in Villa Tunari, Bolivia, contributed to this report. CHICAGO — The ancient manuscript rested on the shelves of the Newberry Library for more than a century. Little was known about the bound book from colonial Mexico that had been donated to the library in 1911 by Edward Ayer, a collector and a tycoon who made his fortune supplying ties to railroad companies. It was called “Ayer 1485′′ in the library’s catalog. But then, two years ago, pages of the manuscript were projected onto the big screen at a Nahuatl conference at Harvard University where experts of the Aztec language had gathered, their first conference since the pandemic. It was like a family reunion, one attendee remembered. At the podium was Ben Leeming, an independent scholar who studies Nahuatl writings used to evangelize Native peoples. While Leeming showed images of the manuscript — a collection of sermons by famed Franciscan missionary Bernardino de Sahagún — and discussed the significance of the words on its pages, Barbara Mundy became slightly preoccupied with the pages themselves. “Of course I’m interested in the text, but what really, really drew my attention was the slides of different pages from this manuscript,” said Mundy, a Tulane University art history professor. “And I said, ‘Ben, could we zoom in on that paper?’ Because the manuscript, which was a big manuscript, was clearly done on a paper that was not European.” Prompted by Mundy’s hunch, the Library of Congress analyzed the papers this fall and made an astounding discovery. The manuscript was printed on maguey paper, a type made from pounded agave plants that is so rare that only 10 sheets were known to exist: four at the Library of Congress and six at the National Library of Anthropology and History in Mexico City. The Newberry’s Library’s manuscript is about 49 sheets long. “When the results did come back, it was very exciting,” said Kim Nichols, the library’s director of conservation. “It’s always exciting ... to see for whatever reason, that something ancient survives. There’s so many reasons why it’s lost.” According to the library’s records, Ayer acquired the manuscript in 1886 from a London rare book dealer. Its first known owner was a Mexican collector and bibliophile, and at least two people owned the manuscript between the Mexican collector and the London dealer, records show. The manuscript, titled “A Sequence of Sermons for Sundays and Saints’ Days” and written by Sahagún between 1540 and 1563, was among the roughly 17,000 items related to Native peoples that Ayer, a Newberry trustee, donated to the library. Theories about its pages being made of maguey have existed since at least 2000, when a library staffer speculated it was such in a conservation report from November of that year. In a 2017 report, a staffer placed a question mark in parentheses next to a guess that it was maguey. At first, Mundy believed the manuscript was made of another type of Native paper, amatl paper. Leeming told her he thought the paper was amatl, she said. But he wasn’t sure. He hadn’t seen much Native paper. Few conference attendees had. Only four amatl and no maguey manuscripts that are definitively pre-Hispanic have survived, according to Mundy. The surviving amatl manuscripts are from the Maya region, which is in the eastern half of Mesoamerica. Most manuscripts from the earliest moments of contact between Europe and the Americas — known as colonial-era manuscripts — are made out of European paper. The Florentine Codex — an encyclopedia of Aztec history and belief written by Sahagún, the main source of what is known about the Aztecs — was written on 2,400 pages of paper imported to Mexico from Italy. All surviving maguey manuscripts, including Sahagún’s sermons, are colonial-era manuscripts. Sometime after the arrival of Europeans, maguey papermaking stopped and the technology went extinct, according to an International Council of Museums publication. Amatl paper, which is made from the inner bark of fig trees, was more common than maguey paper, which is made from the same plant as tequila. Amatl paper is still being produced today. There are hundreds of surviving colonial-era amatl manuscripts, but most are a single sheet long. In a Newberry article from 2022, when Mundy thought Sahagún’s sermons were written on amatl, she wrote that 49 sheets, or “196 pages is a lot of amatl paper, perhaps the largest collation of amatl paper to exist today.” After the Nahuatl conference, Mundy returned to Washington, D.C., where she had a fellowship at the Library of Congress. She told Mary Elizabeth Haude, a Library of Congress paper conservator, about what she saw during the conference. During the summer of 2022, the pair visited the Newberry to see Sahagún’s sermons. Haude said that during the visit, she didn’t think the manuscript was made of amatl because of her familiarity with the Huexotzinco Codex — the Library of Congress’ maguey manuscript, which is made of four sheets of maguey and four sheets of amatl. “I have also been to Mexico and looked at their manuscripts on maguey,” Haude said. “As a conservator, I really have an eye for materials. But that being said, I couldn’t definitively say it was one paper or another until we did fiber analysis.” Nichols began working at the library in late 2022, and a bit of time passed before she was up to speed on the inquiry into Sahagún’s sermons. This fall, Nichols got out Sahagún’s sermons and put drops of deionized water on the manuscript in several spots to make the fibers there more malleable. While using a microscope, she extracted some of those fibers with tweezers. “Under the microscope it looks like a chunk, but when you drop it into a little plastic vial with a snap lid, it looked like it just disappeared into the void,” Nichols said. She sent several vials to the Library of Congress and Haude, who removed the fibers from the vials, mounted them on microscope slides and peered at the slides. “Maguey tends to have this stray fiber — spiral thickenings, I think, is what they’re called. And when they become undone, they make this zigzag pattern, and it’s very, very specific,” Haude said. “So we saw that right away.” ‘It wasn’t just that the paper was rare’ Maguey — a Spanish word for agave plants — has been used to make everyday items like baskets in Mesoamerica since prehistoric times, according to the International Council of Museums publication. It has been used in rituals, and Aztec religion included a goddess of maguey. The four Library of Congress maguey sheets and five of the six maguey sheets in Mexico City are pictorial, meaning they’re drawings, according to Haude. Some of the Mexico City sheets are genealogies, while the Library of Congress sheets served as testimony in a legal case. In the Harvard classroom, Mundy was transfixed by Sahagún’s sermons because of the important role of paper in rituals of Native Mesoamerican peoples, she said. It was used to absorb blood and then burnt in honor of the gods. It was used to make deity costumes. Mundy was “astounded” that paper that was “religiously charged” in the eyes of Native people was dragged into the new Christian world, she said. “It was a Christian manuscript on Native paper, which carried all of this pre-Hispanic religious significance,” Mundy said. “That’s what really caught my attention. It wasn’t just that the paper was rare.” Sahagún arrived in Mexico in 1529, about a decade after the Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire led by conquistador Hernán Cortés. Sahagún believed that better understanding of Native peoples’ “beliefs and practices would improve efforts to convert them to Christianity,” according to the Library of Congress. In the Newberry article, Mundy wrote that while Sahagún worked with Native peoples, he was surrounded by Nahuatl-speaking intellectuals who embraced Christianity, taught Sahagún Nahautl and helped translate Christianity for Native audiences. Because every other surviving Sahagún manuscript was made of European paper, it’s likely that using maguey paper for the sermons was a choice of Sahagún’s Native collaborators, Leeming said. “The paper may have not been Sahagún’s election, but that of his Native collaborators, who saw fit to set Christian sermons down on the substrate that they regarded most highly,” Mundy wrote in the Newberry article. Leeming, who recently produced an English translation of the sermons, said the recent revelation about the manuscript can help correct a lopsided narrative concerning the earliest moments of contact between Europe and the Americas. “This discovery helps balance a historical narrative that has long focused on the role of Spanish friars like Sahagún,” Leeming wrote in an email to the Tribune, “and has relegated the Native people who assisted him to the shadows.” "Illinois needs to quickly and dramatically ramp up our efforts to approve and build new housing, and to give more affordable options to working families," Gov. JB Pritzker said during a news conference to announce new housing initiatives on Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2024. I have two young daughters and it doesn’t take long before a combination of drawing, craft and food turns the house into a pigsty. So when Roborock reached out and offered to let me review a couple of their units, I thought I’d try a little experiment. I decided to pit two different types of vacuum cleaners against each other to see which one is the most useful to a young family living in western Sydney. I got my hands on the Qrevo Edge, a new machine that’s being launched in Australia in January. The robotic vacuum cleaner was first revealed at the IFA 2024 industrial exhibition in Berlin I also got ahold of the H5, which was released earlier this year. It’s Roborock’s latest lightweight handheld cordless vacuum. This is the Roborock Qrevo Edge. Picture: Supplied And this is the Roborock H5. Picture: Supplied Qrevo Edge The Qrevo Edge is the company’s high tech new robovac, and was announced alongside the Qrevo Curv. I haven’t seen the Curv but my understanding is that the Edge and Curv have almost identical specs, except for the dock station. There are five major upgrades in the new Qrevo Edge and I put them to the test. Robovac that can climb Firstly, the cleaning robot can lift its entire chassis by 10mm. I found out this is an incredibly handy feature as the unit I live in has an uneven floor. You see there’s a fairly sizeable height gap between the hallway and the bathroom entrance that other robovacs have struggled to climb. This meant that the bathroom floor missed out while other areas were being regularly cleaned. The Qrevo Edge, however, rose to the challenge, literally. The function is called AdaptiLift Chassis, and it kicks in when the robot detects a difference in height. It then automatically lifts, allowing it to overcome thresholds of 30mm and double-layer thresholds of 40mm, reportedly the highest in the industry. This means it can get more effectively overcome obstacles, better clean high pile carpets and crawl over sled-leg tables or chairs. If this tech is a sign of things to come, it probably won’t be long before robovacs are climbing stairs (Roborock hasn’t announced anything like this yet, but it’s nice to dream). The DuoDivide main brush and FlexiArm Arc side brush are part of the anti-tangle system. Picture: Supplied Tangle-free design Then there’s the dual anti-tangle system: the DuoDivide main brush and the FlexiArm Arc side brush. Tangled hair has actually been a pet peeve of my mine when using other models of robovacs as things often get caught in the brush, ends, and side brush. To deal with that, you need to take apart the cleaner and manually remove the knots, sometimes with scissors or a knife. Roborock has addressed this with a smart design solution. While normal robovacs have side brush shaped like a three-clawed propeller, the FlexiArm side brush is arc-shaped with a two-claw design. This has the benefit of producing a centrifugal force that throws off hairs during rotation, and provides less support for the hairs to get caught on. It also has longer bristles which means a better cleaning performance. The DuoDivide main brush, meanwhile, is designed to funnel hairs into the central dustbin. This is due to the two parallel short bristle rollers with spiral blades, meant to send hairs (and other rubbish) hurtling towards their ultimate fate. Although I don’t have pets, there are plenty of hairs in this house, and the robovac managed to stay tangle-free. The Roborock Qrevo Edge gets right into the corners. Picture: Supplied Man does it suck, in a good way Sorry for that pun, I couldn’t help myself. But suction power has definitely been ramped up. The Edge is now equipped with the HyperForce providing 18,500Pa of suction (pascals measure the vacuum’s suction strength). This benchmark is also reportedly an industry-best. That means it’s better at tough tasks like pulling out hair embedded in carpet. My unit has mostly wooden floors, but there are some rugs where hair inevitably seems to gather, and it did a good job of cleaning those. It also picked up the sand which made it way into our place from various sandpits in Parramatta Park. A robovac that actually cleans the corners Another thing that’s very obvious when the robovac is in action is the FlexiArm tech. This allows the robot to extend the arc side brush and right-side mop when cleaning corners. Edges and corners have always been a weak point of robovacs and I found that the extended cleaning makes a big difference. The FlexiArm Arc extends the brush, and the FlexiArm Mop expands the mop coverage, vastly improving the percentage of the total area cleaned. In terms of cleaning, there’s also a dual mop system, which operates at 180RPM, and the mopping intensity can be adjusted with different water flow levels. Hotter water in the dock That last point provides a good segue to talk about the multifunctional dock, where there have been some improvements. The water temperature for mop washing has been increased from 60C to 75C and the dock has a self-cleaning function that uses hot water. The hot water mop washing is better for cleaning stains, and particularly worked well near the kitchen area. As the mop is cleaned, the dock can also detect how dirty the mop is, and determine whether rewashing or re-mopping is required. I should also point out that there are a range of features on the app. You can control suction power, power flow, the route, and customise the floor plan for cleaning. The robovac also responds to voice commands (various languages are available) and connects to the home Wi-Fi. And, it’s smart enough to permanently note down furniture, as well as spot and avoid objects. I still found that it’s best to tidy up the house before running the Edge, just to avoid problems and to ensure the entire floor is cleaned. Pre-orders for the Qrevo Edge are available now until December 31, 2024, with some bonuses for customers who get in early at Roborock’s online store , as well as JB Hi-Fi, Harvey Norman, The Good Guys, Bing Lee. The Roborock H5 can be mounted for easy storage and quick access. Picture: Supplied H5 The Roborock H5 is a handheld cordless vacuum. I found it’s best used for spot cleaning, rather than a whole house top-to-bottom. There are two functions that I liked the best about the H5. Firstly, you can mount it on the wall for easy storage. It’s quite unobtrusive if positioned in a subtle place like a laundry, and looks fairly good while mounted. Secondly, the H5 is versatile as it has various attachments for different uses. There’s the main multi-surface brush for floors and carpets. And it can automatically activate a 50 per cent power increase on carpets. You can also attach two much smaller brushes, the 2-in-1 Crevice Brush and the Motorised Mini Brush. The Roborock H5 with the Crevice Brush attached. Picture: Supplied You can use the Roborock H5 like a small vacuum cleaner with the powerful Motorised Mini Brush. Picture: Supplied I found the Crevice Brush is good for cleaning annoying spots like car seat and behind appliances. The Motorised Mini Brush is best used for firmly embedded hair, mats and extremely dirty surfaces. As for the stats, it has 158 air watts, a calculation of air flow and wattage. This is used because suction power is lost through the vacuum filter and cyclone. I found it to be strong enough to pick up any rubbish in my unit. It’s light at just 1.55kg (1.82kg with the mini brush) and Roborock claims a 99.997% whole-machine filtration rate, mostly for dust and debris, which has been certified. The machine itself is based on a 9-cone, two-level separation system. Essentially the air is forced to spin around in a vortex, which causes heavier particles to be flung outwards due to the centrifugal force. This is done to ensure the air passes through unobstructed. It’s fairly quiet too, peaking around 68.9dB(A), around the level of typical speech. I was quite impressed with the battery life and I never ran into a problem. It’s my understanding it can run up to an hour on a charge. I found emptying the cleaner to be fairly easy too, you just click a button and the bottom opens. There’s a window so you can tell when it needs emptying, although I generally empty after every clean. Most of the parts are washable too, which helps for longevity. The Roborock Qrevo Edge, which can reach into corners, was the clear winner in my book. Picture: Supplied The verdict The Qrevo Edge wins out due to its convenience and overall cleaning power. The suction power, extended mopping reach, and anti-tangle functions made a big difference in keeping my unit sparkling clean. It performed particularly well as an end-of-day cleaner. However, the H5 also has its uses and is particularly good at solving mess problems instantly. When the kids make a spill on the floor (which seems to happen every half an hour or so), it’s easy to grab the H5 and quickly clean it up. And to be fair, it’s like comparing apples with oranges. The Qrevo Edge retails for $2799 (it will be available on January 1) and can clean the house while you sleep. The H5 is selling for $599 and is great for spot-cleaning. They are different models made for different purposes, but overall I found the Qrevo Edge to be the most useful in keeping this messy house under control. See you tomorrow. pic.twitter.com/5WOxkxARvx — Paul Bissonnette (@BizNasty2point0) November 26, 2024 What Happened to Paul Bissonnette? This past weekend, Bissonnette went out for dinner to a local restaurant in Scottsdale, which he said he visits “three [or] four times a week.” “At one point, there was a bit of a ruckus going on in the bar,” Bissonette said in his X (previously known as Twitter) video, which was shared on Monday, November 25. “It was a bunch of drunk golfers. Things obviously continued to escalate. They [asked] one guy to leave, and one guy kept getting in the manager’s face and put his hands on him. And that went on probably for about 30, 45 seconds.” After seeing the group harass the restaurant’s manager, Bissonnette claimed he “just grabbed the guy’s arm,” and told him, “Sir, if you continue to harass and assault the staff, we’re gonna have problems.” At this point, the group of golfers “started chucking,” Biz claimed. “It escalated extremely quickly,” the NHL alum explained, adding that he fought with the men in the restaurant and outside in the parking lot. “Got taken down a couple times. Got boot f**ked to the head three times.” While he didn’t “get knocked out,” Bissonnette had to go to the hospital. So, he wanted to clarify to his followers that he is physically OK and to emphasize that he wanted the attackers to be exposed. “Just bad dudes. Way too drunk, and I don’t know what else they had in their system,” Bissonnette elaborated. “But, yeah, I’m very, very angry about these guys and want their names out there and want them to pay the piper.” Bissonnette sustained minor injuries from the fight, which he showed on camera in his X video. Two scrapes were visible on both sides of his face. His Barstool Sports podcast co-host, Ryan Whitney , reshared the mugshots of the six perpetrators via X . Barstool’s owner, Dave Portnoy , also reshared the mugshots, tweeting that the assailants “picked the wrong guy” to fight. According to Fox10 Phoenix , the names of Bissonnette’s attackers are Danny Bradley, John G. Carroll, William J. Carroll, Sean Daley, Edward Jennings and Henry Mesker. All were arrested; five of the six men are facing misdemeanors, and one of them is facing a felony charge, the outlet reported. Why Was Paul Bissonnette Attacked? Per Biz, the group of drunk golfers assaulted him and harassed the bar’s staff because they “couldn’t get another cocktail,” he claimed in his X video.EDITOR'S NOTE: On Football analyzes the biggest topics in the NFL from week to week. The Philadelphia Eagles have to make sure they don’t beat themselves. A nine-game winning streak helped the Eagles (11-2) clinch their fourth consecutive playoff berth. They’re seeking an NFC East title and still have a chance at catching Detroit (12-1) for the NFC’s No. 1 seed. But an ugly win over Carolina in which Jalen Hurts only threw 21 passes for 108 yards left wide receivers A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith in a bad mood. He made it clear the offense, specifically the passing attack, wasn’t playing up to standard. He’s right. Hurts has thrown for fewer than 200 yards in three straight games. But Saquon Barkley is running at a record-setting pace so the Eagles haven’t had to rely on Hurts throwing to Brown and Smith as much as they have in the past. Brown caught four passes on four targets for 43 yards while Smith had four catches on six targets for 37 yards and one touchdown against the Panthers. That led to Brown bluntly responding “passing” when asked by a reporter after the game what needs improvement. Veteran leader Brandon Graham added fuel to the drama on his radio show Monday night by implying there’s friction between Brown and Hurts. The two were close friends long before they became teammates and Hurts is the godfather for Brown’s daughter. “The person that’s complaining (needs) to be accountable,” Graham said of Brown. “I’m just being honest. ... Like and he (knows) this. I don’t know the whole story, but I know that (Hurts) is trying. And I mean, (Brown) could be a little better with how he responds to things and they were friends before this. It’s like, man, but things have changed, and I understand that because life happens, but we gotta — it’s the business side that we have to make sure that we don’t let the personal get in the way of the business and that’s what we gotta do better at right now because we know it’s the issue. “Everybody is saying some things, but we need to be able to talk things out as men, you know what I’m saying? But, we need to let personal stuff go and let’s get right for this game because man, it’s like most of the time it’s just a conversation that just (needs) to be had, but the person with the problem (has) to want to talk to the person other than others. That’s all I’m saying." Graham, who is sidelined with a triceps injury, clarified his comments later to an ESPN reporter, saying he made the wrong assumption about the relationship between Hurts and Brown and planned to apologize to both players. But the damage was done. Or was it? While social media ran wild with news there’s more trouble in Philadelphia, the Eagles have been here before. They fell apart last year after a 10-1 start, dropping six of their final seven games, including a lopsided loss in the playoffs to Tampa Bay. There were questions about Hurts’ leadership, his relationship to teammates and the team’s locker room dynamic. Plus, coach Nick Sirianni was harshly criticized for the team’s failures. They overcame a tumultuous offseason and are 11-2 and in position to make a Super Bowl run. All they have to do is get along, put the team first and focus on the overall goal of winning a championship instead of pouting about individual statistics. One breakout passing game can change everything. Bill Belichick can’t break Don Shula’s all-time NFL wins record coaching in college. Whether his interest in the vacancy at the University of North Carolina is genuine or not, it doesn’t change the fact that he has to return to the NFL to become the winningest coach in league history. The biggest question is whether he’ll get that opportunity. Belichick only interviewed with Atlanta out of eight coaching vacancies last season. Belichick, who led the New England Patriots to six Super Bowl titles with Tom Brady, needs to win 27 more games to break Shula’s record for most regular-season victories. He’s 15 wins away from passing Shula for all-time victories, including the postseason. The 72-year-old Belichick explained on ESPN’s “The Pat McAfee Show,” how he would approach a college job. “If I was in a college program, the college program would be a pipeline to the NFL for the players that had the ability to play in the NFL,” Belichick said. “It would be a professional program: training, nutrition, scheme, coaching, techniques that would transfer to the NFL. It would be an NFL program at a college level.” Belichick pointed out the NIL and transfer portal have made college football more like pro football. It makes sense for Belichick to explore all of his options and talk to every team that’s interested. North Carolina could end up being his best opportunity to return to coaching, even if he can’t add those wins to his NFL resume. Get local news delivered to your inbox!
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Taylor Swift once raved about the sweet potato casserole served at a New York City restaurant and now that recipe pops up every now and again at Thanksgiving. The holidays encourage many of us to try new recipes. Social media right now is flooded with recipes for appetizers, side dishes and desserts. Anyone making that cornbread casserole from TikTok? While we might not get to share a Thanksgiving feast with Swift — is your name Blake Lively? — or other celebrities beloved by Kansas City, we can eat like them. So here’s the recipe for that casserole Swift loved so much, and favorite family side dish recipes from Donna Kelce and Eric Stonestreet. Enjoy. If we tried to guess how many holiday dinner rolls Travis Kelce and his brother, Jason Kelce, have scarfed over the years, would it be in the hundreds? Thousands? Their mom has spoken often about the batches of holiday crescent rolls she has baked over the years. Based on the recipe that won the 1969 Pillsbury Bake-Off, Pillsbury’s Magic Marshmallow Crescent Puffs , they’re now known as Mama Kelce’s Dinner Rolls. They blend the crescent roll pastry with marshmallows, cinnamon and sugar. Dinner roll or dessert? We bet they didn’t last long enough in front of Travis and Jason for that debate. Ingredients Rolls •1/4 cup granulated sugar •2 tablespoons Pillsbury Best all-purpose flour •1 teaspoon ground cinnamon •2 (8-ounce) cans refrigerated Pillsbury Original Crescent Rolls (8 Count) •16 large marshmallows •1/4 cup butter or margarine, melted Glaze •1/2 cup powdered sugar •1/2 teaspoon vanilla •2-3 teaspoons milk •1/4 cup chopped nuts Directions Make the rolls 1. Preheat oven to 375°F. Spray 16 medium muffin cups with nonstick baking spray. 2. In a small bowl, mix the granulated sugar, flour and cinnamon. 3. Separate the dough into 16 triangles. For each roll, dip 1 marshmallow into melted butter; roll in the sugar mixture. Place marshmallow on the shortest side of a triangle. Roll up, starting at shortest side and rolling to opposite point. Completely cover the marshmallow with the dough; firmly pinch edges to seal. Dip 1 end in remaining butter; place butter side down in muffin cup. 4. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes or until golden brown. 5. When done, remove from the oven and let the puffs cool in the pan for 1 minute. Remove rolls from muffin cups; place on cooling racks set over waxed paper. Make the glaze and assemble In a small bowl, mix the powdered sugar, vanilla and enough milk for desired drizzling consistency. Drizzle glaze over warm rolls. Sprinkle with nuts. Serve warm. Eric Stonestreet attends 'Eric Stonestreet visits The SiriusXM Hollywood Studios in Los Angeles' at SiriusXM Studios on Oct. 8, 2019, in Los Angeles. (Emma McIntyre/Getty Images for SiriusXM/TNS) Thanksgiving is one of the “Modern Family” star’s favorite holidays. Three years ago, as part of a campaign honoring hometown heroes , he shared one of his favorite recipe with McCormick Spices: Roasted Brussels Sprouts with Bacon and Butternut Squash . This recipe serves eight. Ingredients •1 pound Brussels sprouts, trimmed and halved •1 pound butternut squash, peeled and cut into bite-size cubes •1 tablespoon olive oil •1/2 teaspoon garlic powder •1/2 teaspoon thyme leaves •1/2 teaspoon salt •1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper •5 slices bacon, chopped •1 shallot, finely chopped •1/2 cup dried cranberries •1/4 cup balsamic vinegar •1 teaspoon whole grain mustard •1/2 cup chopped pecans, toasted (optional) •1/3 cup crumbled blue cheese, (optional) Directions 1. Preheat oven to 475°F. Spray large shallow baking pan with no stick cooking spray; set aside. Place Brussels sprouts and squash in large bowl. Drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with garlic powder, thyme, salt and pepper; toss to coat evenly. Spread in single layer on prepared pan. 2. Roast 16 to 18 minutes or until tender and lightly browned, stirring halfway through cooking. 3. Meanwhile, cook bacon in medium skillet on medium heat about 6 minutes or until crispy. Remove using slotted spoon and place on paper towels to drain. Add shallot to same skillet; cook and stir 2 minutes until softened and lightly browned. Stir in cranberries, vinegar and mustard until well blended. Transfer mixture to small bowl; set aside. 4. Arrange roasted Brussels sprouts and squash on serving platter. Drizzle with cranberry balsamic glaze and toss gently to coat. Sprinkle with cooked bacon, toasted pecans, and crumbled blue cheese, if desired. Serve immediately. Swift gushed about the sweet potato casserole served at Del Frisco’s Grille in New York City, a dish crowned with a crunchy candied pecan and oatmeal crumble. “I’ve never enjoyed anything with the word casserole in it ever before, but it’s basically sweet potatoes with this brown sugary crust,” she told InStyle. ”Oh my God, it’s amazing.” The media rushed to find the recipe, which Parade has published this Thanksgiving season . “Similar to T. Swift herself, we think this recipe is a mastermind, especially if you’ve been asked to bring the sweet potato side dish to this year’s Thanksgiving feast. It seriously begs the question: who needs pumpkin pie?” the magazine writes. Ingredients •4 lbs sweet potatoes •1⁄3 cup oats •12 oz unsalted butter, divided •1⁄2 cup packed brown sugar •1⁄2 cup toasted pecans •1⁄2 cup granulated sugar •1 tsp kosher salt •2 tsp vanilla extract •4 large eggs, beaten Directions Preheat oven to 375°F. 1. Scrub sweet potatoes. Pierce each several times with a fork and wrap tightly in foil. Place on a sheet pan. Bake 90 minutes or until tender. Set aside until cool enough to handle. 2. Meanwhile, place oats in a food processor; process 1 minute. Add 4 oz butter, brown sugar and pecans; pulse five times to combine. Spread mixture on a baking sheet; bake 10 minutes. Remove from oven, crumble. Bake 5 minutes or until golden brown. 3. Melt remaining 8 oz butter. Remove skin from cooled sweet potatoes. In a large bowl, whisk sweet potatoes, melted butter, granulated sugar and remaining ingredients until slightly lumpy. Transfer to a greased baking dish, smoothing surface evenly. Top with oat mixture. Bake 12 minutes or until heated through. Make-ahead tips •Sweet potato filling can be made up to 2 days in advance.
