ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — What's stoking the Denver Broncos' surprising surge is the growing connection between rookie quarterback Bo Nix and veteran wide receiver Courtland Sutton. Whenever the Broncos (7-5) need a clutch catch, a key flag or a timely touchdown, Sutton is usually the one delivering it like he did Sunday when he caught eight passes on 10 targets for 97 yards and a pair of touchdowns that sparked the Broncos' come-from-behind 29-19 win at Las Vegas. “Courtland played tremendous,” coach Sean Payton said. Google investing nearly $1B this year in Nebraska; total will hit $4.4BA University of British Columbia PhD student has invented a new way to connect patients in rural and remote communities with ultrasounds without patients having to leave their communities. For this invention, David Black was given the Mitacs Innovation Award for Outstanding Innovation at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa on Tuesday. Mitacs is a non-profit national research organization that partners with Canadian post-secondary students, private industry and government to fund research and foster innovation. The award recognizes extraordinary talent from across Canada whose Mitacs-funded research has the potential to achieve larger societal and economic impacts, according to the organization. Mitacs is itself funded by the federal and provincial governments. Remote ultrasounds will allow health-care professionals to better triage patient care and help people living in remote communities avoid unnecessary travel, says Black, a PhD student in the department of electrical and computer engineering under the supervision of UBC professor Tim Salcudean. Currently, people in remote communities pay extortionate amounts to access ultrasounds, which tend to take only a few minutes, Black says. As an example Black points to Bella Bella, a remote community on British Columbia’s central coast. He says community members collectively spend around $500,000 per year to fly to Vancouver for ultrasound appointments. Research done by UBC Centre for Rural Health Research co-founder Jude Kornelsen in 2020 found that rural residents pay an average of $2,234 in out-of-pocket expenses per diagnosis, per individual, accounting for travel, meal, accommodation and lost wage costs. If an ultrasound could be done in a resident’s community, that would save people time and money and reduce carbon emissions, Black says. There’s also the added benefit of being able to access health care no matter the weather and giving the patient the ability to ask for a family member or trusted community member to perform the exam, he says. Black says his invention was tested this summer in Skidegate, on Haida Gwaii, where 10 healthy volunteers had abdominal ultrasounds done at the Skidegate Health Centre. The ultrasounds were led by two expert sonographers 750 kilometres away at UBC’s Vancouver campus and performed by volunteers in Skidegate. Normally people living in Skidegate have to take an eight-hour ferry to Prince Rupert for an ultrasound, which requires a full day of travel each way and a day to be in Prince Rupert, which means taking several days off work or arranging child care to access a single test, Black says. Depending on the season, weather can disrupt ferry sailings and extend travel time. Using Black’s system, sonographers see the ultrasound reading and a video of the patient in real time, connected over Wi-Fi or 5G, and manoeuvre the ultrasound probe using a type of lever that mimics the shape and manoeuvrability of the probe. In Skidegate, a volunteer wore a mixed reality headset and could see both the patient and a hologram image of where and how the expert had placed the ultrasound probe. The ultrasound probe has pressure sensors on it, allowing the volunteer to mimic the placement, angle and pressure that the expert wants. When the expert sees the ultrasound reading in real time, they are able to, for example, use their lever to push a little harder and lean the probe slightly to the right. The volunteer would see the hologram shift slightly to the right and that the colour of the hologram has shifted too. Blue means too little force, green means the right amount and red means too much. The volunteers “resoundingly” said that the system was easy to use and needed minimal time to learn, Black says. Black says the goal is to make tele-ultrasound “more accessible than video calling,” in a way that helps, but does not replace, doctors. Remote scans could help identify both patients who don’t need further medical care, saving them an unnecessary trip, and patients who do need further medical care, he said. “Ultrasound is becoming a main diagnostic tool in trauma calls,” Black said. One day his device could be used by paramedics or search and rescue teams to check patients for internal bleeding while still in the backwoods, he said. Rural barriers to health care Many British Columbians who live in urban settings have a hard time understanding some of the challenges people have accessing health care in more rural and remote settings, says Paul Adams, executive director of the BC Rural Health Network. These challenges started more than 20 years ago when B.C. split the province up into regional health authorities, which centralized health-care services in larger urban centres, Adams says. The last couple of decades have seen public and cross-provincial transportation diminish, adding to access challenges, he adds. “The development of the ultrasound piece from a remote diagnostic perspective is fantastic and we support those types of initiatives,” Adams said. The Rural Coordination Centre of BC is running a similar program called Real-Time Virtual Support, which is working to bring virtual care to Indigenous communities in the north and providing specialty consultations online, Adams says. “The challenge that we still face is that many of these communities still don’t have internet access and you can’t replace people with technology,” he said. “Care provision really is a human skill, and something is lost between you in the screen versus you and the person who is providing care to you.” Indigenous people may have valid reasons for not trusting Canadian medical institutions, and rebuilding those relationships is a really significant step, Adams said. He added, “You can’t necessarily do that remotely. You have to engage people in person in order to create those avenues of trust.” Black says he hopes his device can help build trust, because it would give people in remote communities the opportunity to have the ultrasound performed by someone they know. He says he is hoping to finish his PhD by mid-summer and start a company to continue developing his device and partnering with more communities. Robots can also be used in a similar way to provide remote ultrasounds. Robots are already being used in B.C., for example at a Victoria clinic offering dense-breast ultrasound screening. There are benefits to using robots, as they will do exactly what you tell them and are good at performing repetitive tasks, but they are also expensive and complex and require a lot of maintenance and setup, Black says. A robot may be useful when used in a busy hospital setting but isn’t practical in small communities, he says. Black points to a 2022 study from the University of Saskatchewan that compared the costs of using a robot, a robot and a travelling sonographer, just a sonographer, and having all patients travel to urban settings for ultrasounds, and found the combination of the robot and travelling sonographer was the most affordable option. The cost analysis set the cost of a telerobotic ultrasound system at $154,000 and an ultrasound system at $54,000. Annual equipment maintenance was estimated to be around 10 per cent of the purchase cost. Black’s device is even more affordable than the robot and could make for some big health-care savings, he says. A mixed reality headset costs around $500, and then you just need an ultrasound probe and a volunteer to run his test, he says. “It’s important to invest in innovation in order to build a more prosperous future,” Mitacs CEO Stephen Lucas told The Tyee in an emailed statement. “That’s why Mitacs is committed to bringing together researchers and enterprises and providing the critical talent needed for innovation.” Mitacs does not have a requirement for any of the projects it invests in to then be made available to the public or government at reduced cost.

Additionally, in the BJP's 48.6% vote share, 12.5 million women voters played a huge role, many of them beneficiaries of the Ladli Behna Yojana. In Maharashtra, the ruling Shinde faction of Shiv Sena took a leaf out of BJP's Madhya Pradesh book and launched the Ladki Bahin Yojana ahead of the assembly polls, providing Rs 1,500 per month to women from families with annual income of less than Rs 2.5 lakh. Chief Minister Shinde later increased this amount to Rs 2,100 and further announced plans to recruit 25,000 women police officers. Despite a narrow 0.4 per cent margin between the ruling Mahayuti and opposition MVA in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP-led coalition secured a historic number of seats at the assembly polls. Many leaders, including CPI(M) leader Ashok Dhawale, attributed the MVA's defeat to initiatives like the Ladki Bahin scheme and construction worker programmes implemented by the Mahayuti government following the Lok Sabha results. Similarly in Jharkhand, the Hemant Soren-headed incumbent government pre-emptively launched the 'Maiya Samman scheme' in August, offering Rs 1,000 monthly to women aged 21-50 years, likely benefiting five million women statewide, which appeared to tilt the eventual outcome in favour of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM). In Jharkhand's Assembly elections, women voters exceeded men across both phases, with higher female turnout in 68 out of 81 constituencies. From 2.61 crore registered voters, including 1.29 crore women, over 1.76 crore voted. As per Election Commission data, women voters numbered 91.16 lakh, surpassing male turnout by 5.52 lakh votes. A similar pattern emerging in Delhi? In the national capital, the ruling AAP has already announced free aid for women. In its 2024-25 budget, the Delhi government had announced this scheme to provide Rs 1,000 per month to all women aged above 18. While there has been some back-and-forth on the matter between the Centre and AAP, Kejriwal recently announced that the amount would be raised to Rs 2,100 if his party returns to power in the assembly elections, slated for February 2025. Going by latest indications, the BJP also hopes to replicate the success of its Madhya Pradesh template in Delhi. The party's Delhi unit has sent urgent feelers to the central leadership to allow it to announce a cash transfer scheme for women and the continuation of free electricity and water plans in the city. BJP's Delhi functionaries believe such promises are crucial to counter AAP, which has already unveiled a cash transfer initiative through the Mahila Samman scheme, ToI reported quoting sources. My trusty spreadsheet compared home-price increases with income growth for 10 large California metropolitan areas using housing indexes by ICE, a mortgage-tech firm, and pay stats from the US Bureau of Economic Analysis. First, consider the estimated median house payment for these California metros. In 2018, payments on the typical $509,400 home purchase ran $2,020 monthly with an average 4.3% mortgage rate, assuming a 20% downpayment. That was 22% of a typical house hunter’s $109,100 income, including two earners. Then, contemplate the payment on today’s $759,500 median-priced home. The payment doubled to $4,000 monthly with 6.9% rates. The mortgage now gobbles up 32% of the $148,500 income that risen 36% in six years. So, what would it take to return this payment burden to pre-coronavirus levels? Rates would have to fall to 3.5%. Incomes would need to surge 50%.Or prices would need to drop 33%. Or some combination of the three. This lack of affordability is why one-third fewer California homes will be sold this year than in 2018. How did we get here? Remember that the housing market was upended by several things during the pandemic: a demand for more living space, mortgage rates under 3% and stimulus checks boosting incomes. Now let’s look at how six years of home appreciation through October contrasts with rising per-capita incomes during the six years ending in 2023. In eight of these 10 California metros, home-price gains outpaced incomes. Here’s how they ranked by the gap ... Bakersfield: 63% gains in home values compared with 29% income growth. Inland Empire: 65% home gain vs. 37% income growth. San Diego: 66% home gain vs. 39% income growth. Fresno: 60% home gain vs. 33% income growth. Ventura County: 51% home gain vs. 36% income growth. LA-OC: 50% home gain vs. 39% income growth. Sacramento: 46% home gain vs. 35% income growth. Stockton: 50% home gain vs. 45% income growth. And in two California metros, incomes beat home prices ... San Jose: 34% home gains topped by 54% income growth. San Francisco: 26% home gains topped by 46% income growth. Sliver of hope For homebuyers, a little bit of good news: appreciation is cooling. Price gains in the 12 months ending in October were significantly smaller than the previous five-year appreciation pace in all but one of the 10 metros. San Diego saw the biggest chill, with prices rising 3.2% in the past year – down from annual average gains of 9.9% between 2018 and 2023. That is a 6.7-percentage-point cooldown. San Jose was the lone spot without a dip in appreciation. Its 5.1% year’s gain was a smidgen above the 5% yearly increases of 2018-23. Here’s how the nine other metros fared by ICE math, ranked by appreciation chill ... Inland Empire: 3.5% year’s gain vs. averaging 9.8% annual increases in 2018-23 – 6.3 points cooler. Sacramento: 1.7% year’s gain vs. 7.5% annually in 2018-23 – 5.8 points cooler. Bakersfield: 4.1% year’s gain vs. up 9.4% annually in 2018-23 – 5.3 points cooler. Stockton: 2.9% year’s gain vs. up 7.9% annually in 2018-23 – 5 points cooler. Ventura County: 3.3% year’s gain vs. up 7.9% yearly in 2018-23 – 4.7 points cooler. Fresno: 4.2% year’s gain vs. up 8.9% annually in 2018-23 – 4.7 points cooler. Los Angeles-Orange County: 3.9% year’s gain vs. up 7.7% annually in 2018-23 – 3.7 points cooler. San Francisco: 1.3% year’s gain vs. up 4.4% annually in 2018-23 – 3.1 points cooler. But smaller home price gains are by no means a cure, because “affordability” really means lowering prices.
