Cachar pays tribute to legendREYKJAVIK, Iceland (AP) — Icelanders voted to elect a new parliament Saturday after disagreements over immigration, energy policy and the economy forced Prime Minister Bjarni Benediktsson to pull the plug on his coalition government and call an early election. This is Iceland’s sixth general election since the 2008 financial crisis devastated the economy of the North Atlantic island nation and ushered in a new era of political instability.

The Los Angeles Chargers placed running back J.K. Dobbins (knee) and safety Alohi Gilman (hamstring) on injured reserve Saturday ahead of their Week 13 game at the Atlanta Falcons . Dobbins and Gilman, two starters, were both injured in Monday night’s loss to the Baltimore Ravens . Dobbins was tackled awkwardly with about five minutes remaining in the second quarter. He did not return. Advertisement Dobbins was having a resurgent 2024, making a case for NFL Comeback Player of the Year after missing most of the past three seasons with two significant lower-extremity injuries. Dobbins leads the Chargers in rushing yards (766) and touchdowns (eight). He had emerged very clearly as the Chargers’ best back. Now Jim Harbaugh will have to move further down the depth chart at running back. Gus Edwards is next in line. But this could be a big opportunity for rookie Kimani Vidal , who has only been active for four games this season. Vidal got his debut regular season NFL action in Week 6 when he caught a touchdown pass on his first career touch. Edwards is a physical back. Vidal could provide an ideal change of pace with Dobbins out. Gilman suffered his hamstring injury in the second half while trying to make a tackle on Baltimore running back Justice Hill . Gilman missed the tackle, and Hill scored a 51-yard touchdown that put the game away. Gilman’s absence will have a substantial impact on the defense. With Gilman and Elijah Molden at safety, the Chargers and defensive coordinator Jesse Minter could move Derwin James Jr. around frequently, most notably to the nickel position. Now James will be forced to play more at safety. The Chargers lost their fourth safety, AJ Finley , earlier this week when they waived him and he was claimed by the Seattle Seahawks . They claimed Marcus Maye off waivers from the Miami Dolphins on Wednesday. The Chargers also signed veteran safety Tony Jefferson to the active roster as part of Saturday’s moves. They are thin at this position heading into an important game in Atlanta. (Photo of J.K. Dobbins: Ronald Martinez / Getty Images) Required readingThe Cowboys made a flurry of roster moves on Saturday, including the activation of rookie defensive end Marshawn Kneeland and veteran offensive tackle Chuma Edoga from injured reserve, per a team announcement. Kneeland, the 56th overall pick in April’s draft, was designated for return on Wednesday after recovering from surgery on a partially torn lateral meniscus . Edoga has been ramping up in practice for a few weeks after a preseason toe injury sidelined him for the Cowboys’ first 10 games. Neither player is expected to start for the Cowboys on Sunday, but they will provide depth on the edge of the trenches on either side of the ball. Kneeland is still hunting for his first career sack at defensive end, while Edoga is likely to serve as a swing tackle behind Tyler Guyton and Terence Steele . To make room on their 53-man roster, the Cowboys placed safety Markquese Bell on injured reserve and waived defensive end K.J. Henry . Bell had to undergo shoulder surgery after a Week 11 injury, while Henry became surplus to requirements with Kneeland’s return. The Cowboys also ruled out All-Pro guard Zack Martin with 2023 undrafted free agent T.J. Bass likely starting in his place. Dallas is also swapping out one All-Pro cornerback for another with Trevon Diggs ruled out and DaRon Bland expected to make his season debut after recovering from a setback from his foot surgery . Bland has played just two games with Diggs over the last two seasons, per The Athletic’s Jon Machota , and he will be the sixth different starting outside cornerback for Dallas this year, according to Calvin Watkins of The Dallas Morning News . Injuries have been a constant issue for the Cowboys this season. On Sunday, the team’s top-five 2024 salary cap hits – totaling more than $100M – will all be sidelined, per ESPN’s Todd Archer . That list includes Martin and Diggs, along with Dak Prescott , DeMarcus Lawrence , and Brandin Cooks , who all remain on injured reserve. Prescott is out for the season , while Lawrence is still rehabbing from a Lisfranc injury . Dallas declined to activate Cooks from injured reserve after he was designated for return earlier this week and progressing towards a return to the field. Labour admits opening more asylum hotels than it has closed - 'breaking another promise'United Nations: The arrest of a Hindu leader in Dhaka has been “misconstrued” and he was arrested on specific charges, Bangladesh has told a UN forum on minority issues, claiming that there has been no systematic attack on minorities in the country. Hindu priest Chinmoy Krishna Das, a former member of International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), was arrested from Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Monday. He was denied bail and sent to jail by the Chattogram’s Sixth Metropolitan Magistrate court in a sedition case on Tuesday. “With utter dismay, we note that the arrest of Chinmoy Das has been misconstrued by some speakers, although he was actually arrested on specific charges. The matter is being dealt with by our court of law,” Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the UN Offices and other international organisations in Geneva Tareq Md Ariful Islam said. Islam made the statement during the 17th session of the Forum on Minorities Issues that took place in Geneva on November 28-29. After Das, the leader of the Hindu group Sammilita Sanatani Jote, was sent to prison, it triggered protests by Hindus in various locations, including the capital Dhaka and the port city of Chattogram. India has noted the developments with deep concern even as a diplomatic row has erupted between the two South Asian neighbours. During the session, some Bangladeshi NGOs and individuals spoke about the situation in the country. A representative of the International Forum for Secular Bangladesh (IFSB) said that the situation right now in the country is “very alarming” and a “very burning issue.” Referring to Das’ arrest, the representative said that ISKCON is a very popular and peaceful organisation but the former ISKCON leader has been arrested with “nothing accused against him. He was arrested three days before in Dhaka and now Bangladesh every day .... the police, army ... every day, they are torturing the minority.” Islam said that Bangladesh reaffirms that every Bangladeshi, regardless of religious identity, has the right to practice their respective religion or express views freely. “Ensuring safety and security of every citizen, including from the minority community, remains the cornerstone of the interim government of Bangladesh,” Islam said. “This has been repeatedly reassured to minority religious leaders by our top leadership, and proved time and again in the first 100 days” of the interim government led by the Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus, he added. The post August 5 violence in Bangladesh was rooted in political and personal factors, not sectarian, he noted. “The violence affected people, mostly with partisan political affiliations, almost all of them being Muslims, and only a few from other religious minority groups.” Deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina fled to India on August 5 following widespread protests against her Awami League-led government over a controversial job quota system. Three days later, Yunus, a Nobel laureate, took over as the Chief Adviser of the interim government. Ariful Islam said that “there was no systematic attack on minorities” and following the mass uprising in July, the world witnessed “how the entire society of Bangladesh came forward to protect its minorities.” He added that “unfortunately” there have been “a fiery of exaggerated, unfounded and fake reports and deliberate spread of misinformation and disinformation by vested quarters regarding minority persecution. Sadly, we saw it happening at this forum too.” He said the Bangladeshi government “remains vigilant and will continue to act promptly to maintain religious harmony at any cost and thwart any attempt to undermine rights of minorities.” Following this week’s anti-Hindu incidents — including Das’ arrest and attacks on Hindu temples and community members — India on Friday said the interim government in Bangladesh must live up to its responsibility of protecting all minorities as it expressed serious concern over the “surge” of extremist rhetoric and increasing incidents of violence against Hindus as well as attacks on temples. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar told Parliament that India has taken serious note of incidents of violence against minorities in Bangladesh and that it is the primary responsibility of Dhaka to protect the life and liberty of all the citizens, including minorities. On the other hand, Bangladesh on Friday expressed deep concern over the violent protest at the Deputy High Commission in Kolkata and urged New Delhi to ensure the safety of all its diplomatic missions in India.
A Sydney family have had a terrifying close call when a red-bellied black snake slithered into their daughter’s bedroom. The highly venomous snake had made its way into the family’s home in Picton, in Sydney’s southwest , on Sunday afternoon, snake catcher Cory Kerewaro from Reptile Relocation Sydney said. “We got the call after the family’s cavoodle had actually found the snake slithering through their house and his commotion alerted the family,” he told 7NEWS.com.au. Know the news with the 7NEWS app: Download today “It had slid into the toy room and curled up amongst the toys, before the family shut the door on it and placed a towel under the door so it couldn’t get out.” Kerewaro said capturing the snake was a pretty “straightforward” call out. “It’s pretty routine stuff for us, we pick them up by the tail and put them straight in a bag,” he said. “But then the daughter... she was petrified to go back in, so we spoke to her for a while and reassured her and gave her advice.” As we enter the warmer months, Kerewaro warns snakes may begin slithering into more garages and onto patios seeking shelter. “I do this all day every day ... but we generally see calls start to pick up in September and that lasts till about April ... that’s what we would typically call the snake season,” he said. “But during the warmer months in December, for example, we find them on patios and garages and going into houses because they can’t self-regulate their temperature ... they seek shelter to cool off, and so we start to find them in different places.” Kerewaro shared an incredible image of the terrifying close call to social media, showing the snake hiding amid a pile of soft toys. “PS no squishmallows were hurt during this relocation,” he joked. The Picton family, “absolutely” did the right thing after finding the deadly snake, Kerewaro added. “They got their dog to safety ... and contained the snake to the room, then they called us, and kept an eye on the door to make sure it didn’t get out,” he said. If you come across a snake in your home, remove all children and pets from the area, then if it safe to do so, isolate the snake to the room by closing the doors and putting towels along the bottom of the doors. The closing of polls started a countdown to the announcement of official results as independent polling firms were preparing to release so-called quick counts. Depending on how tight the vote turns out to be, electoral officials may not call the race for days — as happened in the contentious 2019 runoff that brought center-right President Luis Lacalle Pou to office and ended 15 years of rule by Uruguay’s left-leaning Broad Front. Uruguay’s staid election has turned into a hard-fought race between Álvaro Delgado, the incumbent party’s candidate who won 27% in the first round of voting on Oct. 27, and Yamandú Orsi from the Broad Front, who took 44% of the vote in the first round. But other conservative parties that make up the government coalition — in particular, the Colorado Party — notched 20% of the vote collectively, enough to give Delgado an edge over his challenger. Congress ended up evenly split in the October vote. Most polls have shown a virtual tie between Delgado and Orsi, with nearly 10% of Uruguayan voters undecided even at this late stage. Many said they believed turnout would be low if voting weren’t compulsory in the country. “Neither candidate convinced me and I feel that there are many in my same situation,” said Vanesa Gelezoglo, 31, in the capital, Montevideo, adding she would make up her mind at “the last minute.” Analysts say the candidates’ lackluster campaigns and broad consensus on key issues have generated extraordinary indecision and apathy in an election dominated by discussions about social spending and concerns over income inequality but largely free of the anti-establishment rage that has vaulted populist outsiders to power elsewhere. “The question of whether Frente Amplio (the Broad Front) raises taxes is not an existential question, unlike what we saw in the U.S. with Trump and Kamala framing each other as threats to democracy,” said Nicolás Saldías, a Latin America and Caribbean senior analyst for the London-based Economist Intelligence Unit. “That doesn’t exist in Uruguay.” Both candidates are also appealing to voter angst over a surge in violent crime that has shaken a nation long regarded as one of the region’s safest, with Delgado promising tough-on-crime policies and Orsi advocating a more community-oriented approach. Delgado, 55, a rural veterinarian with a long career in the National Party, campaigned on a vow to continue the legacy of current President Lacalle Pou — in some ways making the election into a referendum on his leadership. He campaigned under the slogan “re-elect a good government.” While a string of corruption scandals rattled Lacalle Pou’s government last year, the president — who constitutionally cannot run for a second consecutive term — now enjoys high approval ratings and a strong economy expected to grow 3.2% this year, according to the International Monetary Fund. Inflation has also eased in recent months, boosting his coalition. Delgado served most recently as Secretary of the Presidency for Lacalle Pou and promises to pursue his predecessor’s pro-business policies. He would continue pushing for a trade deal with China that has raised hackles in Mercosur, an alliance of South American countries promoting regional commerce. “We have to give the government coalition a chance to consolidate its proposals,” said Ramiro Pérez, a street vendor voting for Delgado on Sunday. Orsi, 57, a former history teacher and two-time mayor from a working-class background, is widely seen as the political heir to iconic former President José “Pepe” Mujica, an ex-Marxist guerilla who raised Uruguay’s international profile as one of the region’s most socially liberal and environmentally sustainable nations during his 2010-2015 term. His Broad Front coalition oversaw the legalization of abortion, same-sex marriage and the sale of marijuana in the small South American nation of 3.4 million people. “He’s my candidate, not only for my sake but also for my children’s,” Yeny Varone, a nurse, said of Orsi. “In the future they’ll have better working conditions, health and salaries.” Mujica, now 89 and recovering from esophageal cancer, was among the first to cast his ballot after polls opened. “Uruguay is a small country, but it has earned recognition for being stable, for having a citizenry that respects institutional formalities,” he told reporters from his local polling station. “This is no small feat.” While promising to forge a “new left” in Uruguay, Orsi plans no dramatic changes. He proposes tax incentives to lure investment and social security reforms that would lower the retirement age but fall short of a radical overhaul sought by Uruguay’s unions. The contentious plebiscite on whether to boost pension payouts failed to pass in October, with Uruguayans rejecting generous pensions in favor of fiscal constraint. Both candidates pledged full cooperation with each other if elected. “I want (Orsi) to know that my idea is to form a government of national unity,” Delgado told reporters after casting his vote in the capital’s upscale Pocitos neighborhood. He said that if he won, he and Orsi would chat on Monday over some yerba mate, the traditional herbal drink beloved by Uruguayans. Orsi similarly pledged a smooth and respectful transition of power, describing Sunday’s democratic exercise as “an incredible experience” as he voted in Canelones, the sprawling town of beaches and cattle ranches just north of Montevideo where he served as mayor for a decade. “The essence of politics is agreements,” he said. “You never end up completely satisfied.” Associated Press writer Isabel DeBre in Villa Tunari, Bolivia, contributed to this report.

Yankee Hill Townhomes LLC to Lancaster Development LLC , 6343 S 7th Pl, $211,185.(The Center Square) – President Donald Trump has promised to reduce government waste and employed wealthy businessmen Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy to lead the charge. So far, spending on federal Diversity, Equity and Inclusion policies are prime targets for Musk and Ramaswamy, and a recent report shows just how widespread federal DEI spending has become. The report from Do No Harm shows 500 ways the Biden-Harris administration “infused DEI into the federal government.” Those examples include federal agencies starting dozens of equity training programs, doling out federal contracts and jobs based on race and gender, and teaching Americans more about their country’s racism, both past and present. The DEI explosion took off after Biden issued executive orders on his first day in office as well as another in June of 2021. The first executive order “established that affirmatively advancing equity, civil rights, racial justice, and equal opportunity is the responsibility of the whole of our Government.” The second order established “that it is the policy of my Administration to cultivate a workforce that draws from the full diversity of the Nation.” Biden also issued other executive orders, including around gender and sexuality, to the same effect his first year in office. Those orders gave federal bureaucrats not only permission but actually direct orders to embrace DEI policies across the board. And Do No Harm’s report shows they did, full-throttle, citing 80 “Equity Action Plans” submitted by agencies that promised over 500 taxpayer-funded actions. Some of the actions are seemingly mild, such as the U.S. Social Security Administration tracking more racial data. Other examples of DEI policies, though, made the federal government the nation’s teacher. For example, a blog for the U.S. Treasury Department lectures Americans on racial inequality. More directly, the federal government began implementing training programs for many federal employees that fully embrace racial ideology labeled “woke” by its opponents. For instance, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission invested in training for employees to consider equity more in its regulatory decisions. More from this section “Training will address how equity and environmental justice involves removing barriers underserved communities may face in the context of the Commission’s practices, processes, and policies,” FERC said in its Equity Action Plan. “Training also will address how, consistent with FERC’s mission and statutory duties, the Commission considers the impact of its actions on such communities. More specific trainings geared toward the responsibilities of different program offices and issue areas also may be identified or developed and offered.” Other actions seem to favor some groups over others. Changing the “percentage” of benefits received necessarily requires giving contracts, grants, or other federal resources to certain groups, almost always at the expense of white Americans, even more often white men. For example, the American Battle Monuments Commissions in its Equity Action Plan called for “expanding the percentage of U.S.-based contracted goods and services awarded to minority-owned, women-owned, and service disabled veteran-owned enterprises.” In fact, the ABMC pledged to pay a worker for this sole purpose. In another instance, the Smithsonian Institute pledged to recruit more Black and indigenous interns. “One of the simplest ways to ensure equity and accessibility in internships is to provide a livable stipend and advertise it clearly in promotion materials,” the federal group said in its Equity Action Plan. “Many units include a statement directly in their internship description about their commitment to equity. They also are intentional about making the application process simple and transparent, offering access services for interviews and allowing for multiple formats in place of a required essay.” The Smithsonian Institution , the federal steward of America’s past, also promised to begin promoting a historical framework that emphasizes American racism in the past and today. The federal group pledged to “Address the historical roots and contemporary impacts of race and racism in the United States and globally through interdisciplinary scholarship, creative partnerships, dialogue, education, and engagement.” The Center Square has reported on other examples of DEI policies and grants becoming the norm in recent years as well, though much of this kind of spending began before the Biden-Harris administration took power. Those include: $2.6 million in taxpayer dollars to train students to promote critical race theory. Millions to train school teachers in DEI ideology around race and gender. A portion of New York's $9 billion in federal COVID funding was spent training staff in ‘privilege’ and to recognize ‘equity warriors,’" among other related themes. $1.2 million for research find evidence that racism is the culprit for minorities struggling to sleep at night.
Charlotte Hornets forward Grant Williams will miss the rest of the 2024-25 NBA season due to a torn ACL on his right knee, the team confirmed on Sunday. The injury occurred on Saturday, in the fourth period of the Hornets’ 125-119 loss against the Milwaukee Bucks . Williams drove to the basket during the final period and was defended by center Brook Lopez . His right knee gave out as he stopped, causing him to fall and fumble the basketball. The veteran forward had to limp as he made his way to the team’s bench and was assisted to the locker room. Williams finished the night with eight points, seven rebounds, a steal and a block in 31 minutes. On X (formerly Twitter), the 6-foot-6 forward appreciated the support he received following his injury. After his torn ACL was confirmed, he thanked his fans and followers on Sunday. “Appreciate all the love and support from those who have reached out. Time to goto work it’s all we can do ,” Williams posted on X. Appreciate all the love and support from those who have reached out. Time to goto work it’s all we can do — Grant Williams (@Grant2Will) November 24, 2024 Williams played 10 games for Charlotte this season, averaging 10.4 points, 5.1 rebounds and 2.3 assists. The former Boston Celtics player shot 43.9% from the field and 36.5% from beyond the arc. In the middle of the 2023-24 season, Williams was traded by the Dallas Mavericks after he was acquired by the team via a sign-and-trade over the summer. He played for 47 games for the Mavs, averaging 8.1 points and 3.6 rebounds. 3 players who could replace Grant Williams for the Hornets The Hornets have found themselves in a tricky situation following the injury of Grant Williams. With another player down, their injury-riddled frontcourt needs to be addressed. Mark Williams, Nick Richards, and Miles Bridges are all anticipated to be out until November 27. These three forwards could join Charlotte and contribute to the team. Robert Covington Robert Covington is an experienced forward who could contribute on both ends of the floor. In his career, Covington is a 36% shooter from deep and his 6-foot-9 frame helps him guard any position on the floor. Although not a double-digit scorer as he once was, he still brings value offensively and defensively. Jae Crowder Like Grant Williams, Jae Crowder is a 6-foot-6 versatile forward. Crowder is a defensive asset who can match his opponent’s physicality, so he can fill in for Williams while he’s out. His 34% efficiency from three also comes in handy on the offensive end. Chimezie Metu Chimezie Metu is a younger 26-year-old forward who could match the energy the young Hornets team brings. At 6-foot-9, Metu is a hardworking rim runner.
