NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his visit to Kuwait on Saturday, highlighted India's readiness to support the development of a 'New Kuwait' with its vast pool of manpower, expertise, and cutting-edge technology. He praised the Indian diaspora for enriching the nation with their skills and contributions. PM Modi, visiting at the invitation of Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, became the first Indian Prime Minister to visit Kuwait in over four decades. Addressing the Indian diaspora, he said, "After 43 years, more than four decades, an Indian Prime Minister has come to Kuwait. It takes four hours to reach Kuwait from India but it took four decades for the Prime Minister,” PM Modi commended the strong cultural and commercial ties between India and Kuwait, noting that their partnership is scaling new heights. “In the past, the relationship that was built by culture and commerce is scaling new heights today. Today, Kuwait is an important energy and trade partner of India. For the Kuwaiti companies too, India is a huge investment destination. His Highness Crown Prince of Kuwait, during our meeting in New York, said, 'When you are in need, India is your destination.' The citizens of India and Kuwait have always helped each other in times of distress,” he added. Highlighting shared aspirations, the Prime Minister said, “In the decades to come, we will become partners in our prosperity. Our goals aren't different! The people of Kuwait are building New Kuwait. The people of Bharat are working to build India into a developed nation by 2047.” During his visit, PM Modi toured the Gulf Spic Labour Camp, where over 90% of the residents are Indians, and engaged with the expatriate community, which numbers around one million in Kuwait. He expressed admiration for their contributions, saying, “Their energy, love, and unwavering connection to India are truly inspiring. Proud of their role in strengthening ties between our nations.” PM Modi also met 101-year-old former IFS officer Mangal Sain Handa, publisher Abdul Lateef Al-Nesef, and translator Abdullah Al-Baroun, who brought Indian epics like the Ramayana and Mahabharata to Arabic-speaking audiences. On his arrival, PM Modi was received by Sheikh Fahad Yousef Saud Al-Sabah, Kuwait’s first deputy prime minister and minister of defence and interior, along with foreign minister Abdullah Ali Al-Yahya and other dignitaries. He described the warm welcome as a testament to the enduring friendship between the two nations. Stay updated with the latest news on Times of India . North Korea vows 'toughest' anti-US policy weeks before Trump enters White House
By ROB GILLIES TORONTO (AP) — Canada is already examining possible retaliatory tariffs on certain items from the United States should President-elect Donald Trump follow through on his threat to impose sweeping tariffs on Canadian products, a senior official said Wednesday. Trump has threatened to impose tariffs on products from Canada and Mexico if the countries don’t stop what he called the flow of drugs and migrants across southern and northern borders. He said he would impose a 25% tax on all products entering the U.S. from Canada and Mexico as one of his first executive orders. A Canadian government official said Canada is preparing for every eventuality and has started thinking about what items to target with tariffs in retaliation. The official stressed no decision has been made. The person spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to speak publicly. When Trump imposed higher tariffs during his first term in office, other countries responded with retaliatory tariffs of their own. Canada, for instance, announced billions of new duties in 2018 against the U.S. in a tit-for-tat response to new taxes on Canadian steel and aluminum. Many of the U.S. products were chosen for their political rather than economic impact. For example, Canada imports $3 million worth of yogurt from the U.S. annually and most comes from one plant in Wisconsin, home state of then-House Speaker Paul Ryan. That product was hit with a 10% duty. Another product on the list was whiskey, which comes from Tennessee and Kentucky, the latter of which is the home state of then-Republican Senate leader Mitch McConnell. Trump made the threat Monday while railing against an influx of illegal migrants, even though the numbers at Canadian border pale in comparison to the southern border. The U.S. Border Patrol made 56,530 arrests at the Mexican border in October alone — and 23,721 arrests at the Canadian one between October 2023 and September 2024. Canadian officials say lumping Canada in with Mexico is unfair but say they are happy to work with the Trump administration to lower the numbers from Canada. The Canadians are also worried about a influx north of migrants if Trump follows through with his plan for mass deportations. Trump also railed about fentanyl from Mexico and Canada, even though seizures from the Canadian border pale in comparison to the Mexican border. U.S. customs agents seized 43 pounds of fentanyl at the Canadian border last fiscal year, compared with 21,100 pounds at the Mexican border. Canada is the top export destination for 36 U.S. states. Nearly $3.6 billion Canadian (US$2.7 billion) worth of goods and services cross the border each day. About 60% of U.S. crude oil imports are from Canada, and 85% of U.S. electricity imports are from Canada. Canada is also the largest foreign supplier of steel, aluminum and uranium to the U.S. and has 34 critical minerals and metals that the Pentagon is eager for and investing in for national security. “Canada is essential to the United States’ domestic energy supply,” Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland said. Trump has pledged to cut American energy bills in half within 18 months, something that could be made harder if a 25% premium is added to Canadian oil imports. In 2023, Canadian oil accounted for almost two-thirds of total U.S. oil imports and about one-fifth of the U.S. oil supply. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is holding a emergency virtual meeting on Wednesday with the leaders of Canada’s provinces, who want Trudeau to negotiate a bilateral trade deal with the United States that excludes Mexico. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said Wednesday that her administration is already working up a list of possible retaliatory tariffs “if the situation comes to that.”Texans trying to get 'locked in' with Jags up next

The little girl’s unique approach to Kashmir and Pakistan politics has the internet craving for more. Her adorable voice has Indians rooting for her and requesting that she be given a visa to come to India. The 1-minute video starts with an interviewer interviewing the girl, believed to be in her teenage. The interview begins with the interviewer asking her about one thing she would ask from India. In reply, the girl begins, “Meri ek request hai India se, woh hume Kashmir dede. Kyunki, hamare pass ek hai Azad Kashmir, but woh bahut chota hai. Ab Jammu Kashmir jo hai, woh bahut bada hai. Aur India pehle se bahut bada hai. Isliye main bolungi ki woh log hume Jammu Kashmir dede.” “Lekin Pakistan ke jo halat hai na, mujhe lagta hai ki woh Azad Kashmir le bhi lenge. Hamare Army strong tha, bas gaya ab Army wale bhi politics main agaye. Jung shuru hoga toh Pakistan tabah ho jayega,” the girl quips. Her hilarious interview has caught the attention of Indians who adored her for her honest remarks. “Most probably the feeling of all POK residents...this girl has expressed it, a user commented. Likewise, another user shared, “In such an young age to have gained a clear perception of her own country, unobstructed by impractical notions of honour, valour or sacrifice by the Pakistani army. No mocking, she is only speaking the truth.” “At such a young age, she has a good understanding of the current situation (Pak Army in Politics),” shared another user.Kuwait first in region to offer children RSV, pneumonia vaccinesMIAMI — Jonnu Smith had been so involved in the Miami Dolphins’ offense in recent weeks. But over the first 60 minutes of Sunday’s game against the New York Jets at Hard Rock Stadium, Smith appeared to be missing. No catches. One target. It all changed in overtime though. Smith made all three of his catches in the extra period including a 10-yard touchdown reception in traffic from Tua Tagovailoa to lift the Dolphins to a much-needed 32-26 comeback victory. “I lost my voice out there going crazy,” Smith said. “It’s my faith that has me prepared for any moment. I didn’t blame the first, second, third quarter. Individually, it wasn’t the game I’ve been having the past couple of weeks but I didn’t blink at all. I’m just excited about continuing to have offensive success going forward and when my time comes, I just have to be there to make the play that counts.” The Dolphins (6-7), who basically cannot afford another loss this season if they are to somehow sneak into the playoffs, are now tied with the Indianapolis Colts (6-7) and two games behind the Denver Broncos (8-5) for the final wild-card spot in the AFC. The loss eliminated the Jets (3-10) from postseason contention for the 14th consecutive season. It was the Dolphins’ first overtime game in the three seasons since Mike McDaniel became head coach and Miami’s first overtime win since Dec. 22, 2019 at home against the Cincinnati Bengals. It took Miami erasing two fourth quarter deficits to make it happen. And it took some Tagovailoa-to-Tyreek Hill magic to make that happen. With the Dolphins winning the coin toss and gaining the first and would-be lone possession of overtime, Smith first caught a short pass from Tagovailoa and turned it into a 20-yard gain to the 50. Miami followed with basically the same play on which Smith picked up another 14 yards. Four more plays put the Dolphins at the Jets’ 10, setting up Tagovailoa’s well-timed throw into Smith’s hands for the game-winning score. “I think Jonnu came up and said something to Mike or had to have to get more included and that’s what happened,” Tagovailoa said. “He didn’t say anything during the game. Not seeing the ball can be discouraging. He never blinked and just took advantage of his opportunities.” The Dolphins trailed 23-15 entering the fourth quarter and later 26-23 near the end of regulation. Jason Sanders booted a 52-yard field goal to tie the game with seven seconds remaining to force overtime. Sanders also made a 57-yard field goal earlier in the game and missed an extra point, but went 4 for 4 on field goals for the game. It was the eighth time Tagovailoa has led a fourth quarter comeback in his career and second this season, having also brought Miami back in its season-opening win over the Jacksonville Jaguars. It was also his 10th game-winning drive overall. Tagovailoa completed 33 of 47 passes for 331 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. “Tua has been playing lights out,” Hill said. “I don’t think he gets enough credit for the things that he does outside of making plays whether it’s getting us lined up right correctly. Me and him had a moment whenever I ran the wrong way he came to tell me exactly how I needed to run it. He’s a great leader for this team. We just gotta follow him and follow his standard.” Reestablishing the Tagovailoa-to-Hill combination late in the game saved Miami’s season. Facing a third-and-10 from their own 40, Tagovailoa found Hill open in a crease in the Jets’ secondary where he made a leaping catch for a first down to New York’s 42. After Miami’s red zone issues seemed to cost them another score, the Dolphins went for it on fourth and goal from the 4. Tagovailoa found Hill just inside the goal line for a touchdown with 9:04 to go. He then connected with Jaylen Waddle for a 2-point conversion to knot the game at 23. “Nobody batted an eye, nobody flinched. We just kept going to work,” Calais Campbell said. “Good team win. Perseverance. Playing together and found a way to win.” Aaron Rodgers nearly derailed the Dolphins’ comeback, however, as he directed an 11-play, 63-yard drive capped by a 42-yard field goal by Anders Carlson. Rodgers completed 27 of 39 passes and finished with a season-best 339 yards passing, one touchdown and no interceptions. Garrett Wilson (114 yards on seven catches) and Davante Adams (109 yards and a touchdown on nine catches) also both finished with 100 or more yards in a game for the first time this season. Just over a week after he had a costly muffed punt in a loss at Green Bay, Malik Washington’s kickoff return to the Dolphins’ 46-yard line set Miami’s game-tying drive at the end of regulation in motion. And so, the Dolphins held serve again, winning one of the games they needed to win against a sub-.500 — albeit AFC East division rival. The win was crucial in that regard with Miami facing likely its toughest opponent remaining on its schedule next Sunday when they travel to Houston to face the 8-5 Texans, who were idle this week. “The players chose to not give up in this game and when you do that and survive adversity, the thing on the other side, that’s the best stuff,” McDaniel said. “In life, easy is way overrated and not usually worth it.” ©2024 Miami Herald. OWINGS MILLS — The biggest question facing the Baltimore Ravens right now has little to do with Lamar Jackson or even a defense that started the season poorly. It’s about a kicking conundrum that has turned into a crisis. Can the Ravens make it to the Super Bowl with Justin Tucker? One of the more surprising subplots of this NFL season has been Tucker’s decline from one of the greatest of all time to a week-in, week-out liability. Sunday’s loss to Philadelphia might have been the nadir — he missed two field goals and an extra point in a game the Ravens ultimately lost 24-19 . “Points were at a premium in the game. They have been in a few of these games. Sometimes we haven’t made the most of our opportunity to score points,” coach John Harbaugh said Monday. “We’re racking our brains, talking to Justin, looking at what we’re doing. I’m very confident that it’s going to get fixed. I believe it will. It has to. “And he’s the guy to get it fixed.” Harbaugh has given every indication that he’s standing by Tucker, who is in his 13th season and is under contract through 2027. When he’s at his best, he’s the type of kicker that gives his team a clear advantage in close games, but this season he has missed eight field goals. Sunday showed that against a good defensive team, the Ravens (8-5) can’t simply assume their excellent offense will pile up points. There almost certainly will be close games in the weeks to come. Tucker’s ability to come through will be tested again, and it’s hard for Baltimore to feel too confident at the moment. “When he was hitting, three or four years ago, hitting bombs, we were going 57, 58, 56 pretty regularly,” Harbaugh said. “That’s tightened up a little bit.” What’s working The Ravens continue to do a good job stopping the run. Although Saquon Barkley did eventually surpass the 100-yard mark late in the game, Baltimore held the Eagles to 140 yards on the ground, well below their usual output. What needs help Even beyond Tucker’s problems, Sunday wasn’t a great showing by Baltimore’s special teams. Tylan Wallace was shaky returning punts, and the Ravens had to start four drives inside their own 20 and two inside their own 10. “They had great bounces, and they downed right down in there,” Wallace said. “I’m pretty sure we’ll come back and talk about those and see what we can do to avoid those.” Stock up The Ravens’ defense continued to show signs of improvement, holding Philadelphia to 252 total yards. “I think we’ve just locked in on some things, and we’re playing our deep coverages better, bottom line,” Harbaugh said. “You watch the coverage, you watch the guys’ spacing, positioning, eyes, the communication, the checks that get made, and you just keep chasing doing the right things. It’s not (that we) changed the defense. We’re just playing it a lot better.” Stock down Harbaugh was vague on receiver Diontae Johnson’s situation. He was active Sunday but didn’t play, and he has only one catch in four games since the Ravens acquired him in a trade from Carolina. “I’m going to have to wait just to clarify it,” Harbaugh said. “There’s some moving parts there that we’re going to have to figure out and explore and just see where we’re at. I know that’s not the answer you want, but that’s the best I can do in fairness to everybody right now.” Injuries The Ravens were missing pass-rushing ace Kyle Van Noy (hamstring/neck) on Sunday, and WR Rashod Bateman was dealing with knee soreness. Key stats Through his first 12 seasons, Tucker made field goals at a 90% clip. That’s dropped to 70% this season. He had a 95% success rate from under 50 yards, and that’s dipped to 83%. Next steps The Ravens have this week off before a Dec. 15 road game against the New York Giants. Then comes a home matchup with Pittsburgh that may determine whether Baltimore has any shot to win the AFC North. New Delhi, Dec 30 (PTI) Speedy implementation of labour codes, providing social security to informal workers, especially gig and platform, and bringing transformative policies would be the government's priority in 2025 to empower all and boost the economy. All 36 states and UTs are expected to complete harmonization and pre-publication of draft rules under the four labour codes by 31st March 2025, according to the labour ministry. In 2024, "we achieved significant milestones in enhancing the IT systems of EPFO (Employees' Provident Fund Organisation) and ESIC (Employees' State Insurance Corporation), enabling the prompt and efficient resolution of grievances for millions of beneficiaries". Recognizing the growing importance of gig and platform workers, he stated that the government has taken proactive steps to address their social security concerns' – a journey that is ongoing and central to the agenda. "Looking ahead, we are determined to accelerate the implementation of labour codes and introduce transformative policies that empower every citizen to contribute meaningfully to the nation's growth story," he said. The four labour codes on social security, industrial relations, wages, and Occupational Safety Health & Working Conditions (OSH) were passed by Parliament. These can be implemented across the country only when the Centre and states notify the respective rules simultaneously as labour is a concurrent subject. According to the labour ministry, as of December 3, 2024, three states viz Meghalaya, Nagaland and West Bengal and a union territory of Lakshadweep, have not yet pre-published the Rules on the Code on Wages, 2019. Two states viz. Meghalaya and West Bengal and two union territories (UTs) viz. Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Lakshadweep and NCT of Delhi have not pre-published the Rules on the Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code, 2020. Similarly three states viz. Meghalaya, Nagaland, West Bengal and two UTs viz. Lakshadweep and NCT of Delhi have not prepublished the Rules on the Industrial Relations Code, 2020. Likewise three states viz. Meghalaya, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal and two UT viz. Lakshadweep and NCT of Delhi have not pre-published the Rules on the Code on Social Security, 2020. Among others, the codes provide for a uniform definition of 'wages' that will help in reducing multiple interpretations of the labour law and related litigations. Under the codes, the gig and platform workers have been defined for the purpose of formulating schemes to provide social security benefits. Also, the central government may also extend benefits to unorganised workers, gig workers and platform workers and the members of their families through Employees' State Insurance Corporation or Employees' Provident Fund Organization (EPFO). While provisions of the codes aim to enhance job security and enable workers to claim statutory benefits such as minimum wage and social security, labour unions are up in arms against these new rules. AITUC General Secretary Amarjeet Kaur said trade unions will intensify their struggle against the present form of labour codes and its notification and demand the Indian Labour Conference to be held to consider the view point of trade unions on these codes. The unions would fight to defend public sector and public services in the interest of common people and the nation as such. "We consider the four labour codes as negation of the labour rights won over after struggle of 150 years from British Raj onwards. “These codes negate our right to strike, make union registration problematic, de-recognition of unions easy, the process of conciliation and adjudication cumbersome, winding up labour courts and introducing tribunal for workers, overriding power to registrars to de-register unions," he said. The trade unions have common cause with the farmers movement supporting each other and would intensify this unity and enhance agitations on the new year. They would resort to massive mobilisations nationwide and also plan for general strike, he added. In addition to labour codes rules, the government took measures to ease processes for EPFO members and pensioners and expand social security benefits by creating database of various workers. The Central Board of Trustees (CBT) of EPFO approved a proposal for a Centralized Pension Payment System (CPPS) enabling EPS Pensioners to get pension from any bank, any branch, anywhere in India from January 2025. The CBT also recommended EPFO Amnesty Scheme 2024 which has been designed to encourage employers to voluntarily disclose and rectify past non-compliance or under-compliance without facing penalties or legal repercussions. EPFO enhanced the limit for Auto claim settlement of partial withdrawals from Rs 50,000 to Rs 1,00,000. The Facility has been extended for housing, education and marriage in addition to illness. EPFO is also working on an integrated, centralized data-base, bringing efficiency in the process. The IT upgradation involving hardware and software upgrade, is targeted to be completed by January 2025. ESIC gave in-principle approval for the establishment of 10 New ESIC Medical Colleges. Besides, the government announced the Employment Linked Incentive Scheme, in the Union Budget 2024-25, for boosting employment. An MIS portal for building and construction workers was launched in August for compilation and analysis of the data obtained from BoCW welfare boards of the states. The National Career Service portal announced partnerships with leading employers to drive employment. From 1st January 2024 to 15th December 2024, 1,89,33,219 vacancies were mobilized on the NCS portal, taking the total vacancies mobilized since inception to 3.89 crores. Registrations on e-shram crossed 30 crores this year showcasing its rapid and widespread adoption among the unorganised workers. As those in the northern hemisphere brace themselves for colder temperatures during the winter months, cases for cold and flu are, as expected, rising. Click Pharmacy has been reviewing cold and flu cases across England, revealing more than two thirds of adults (aged under 65 years) eligible for their flu jab have not taken up the offer. Jana Abelovska, Superintendent Pharmacist at Click Pharmacy , tells Digital Journal that ‘real flu’ (as opposed to the common cold) is unpleasant and sometimes dangerous. Abelovska states: “While for most people seasonal flu is an unpleasant condition that can be treated at home, for some people it can be very dangerous. It can make conditions like asthma and heart disease worse. Flu can also put vulnerable people at risk of developing complications like pneumonia, or inflammatory conditions like myocarditis and encephalitis.” In the UK vaccines against influenza are commonly available, yet the take-up in 2024 is relatively low. Abelovska observes: “T he NHS Seasonal Vaccination Programme makes the flu vaccine available for free to these people who are at additional risk – it was concerning to see that as of 4 November, fewer than a third of adults under 65, pregnant women and toddlers aged 2-3 had been in to get their free vaccine yet. While flu cases look quite low at present according to government and NHS data, we might see cases rise higher in the winter – we would urge everyone who is eligible for a flu jab to make that appointment.” Flu cases In terms of prevalence, 3.3 percent of flu tests have been declared positive on 10 November 2024. On the same date a year ago, only 1.3 percent tests came out positive. This suggests an increase in cases. Click Pharmacy has compared positive flu tests by age group over the past four months. Once again using the 10th as the date, the age group showing the highest likelihood of testing positive in November was children aged 5-14, 9.5 percent of whose tests were positive – over twice as high as the month before. The group second most likely to test positive was teenagers and young people aged 15-24, at 6.3 percent. In third place, 5.4 percent of people aged 25-44 tested positive. The research also looked at the number of people hospitalised with the flu in November using information from the Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI) surveillance scheme. In the week ending 4 November 2024, the number of people hospitalised per 100,000 trust catchment population was 1.23. London had the highest number of hospital admissions at 1.8 per 100,000. The region with the lowest number of hospital admissions for flu is the South of England at 0.8 per 100,000.The North of England and the Midlands and East of England have very similar numbers at 1.1 and 1.2 per 100,000 respectively. Flu vaccines The region that has received the highest number of flu vaccines through the NHS Seasonal Vaccination Programme is the Midlands, where 2,733,620 people have been vaccinated. The South East had received the second highest number of flu vaccines at 2,460,425, and the North East and Yorkshire was in third place, at 2,311,060. The data also compared the numbers of people who had received a free vaccine in the following three categories. Those aged over 65 had received the highest number of flu vaccines at 7,764,619, followed by children aged 2-3 at 4,31,892. School aged children from reception to Year 11 received 2,094,967 vaccinations. The research also found that as of 4 November, 66.6 percent of those aged 65 and over had received their flu vaccine. However, in other eligible groups the uptake was lower, with 28.7 percent of pregnant women, 31.5 percent of eligible adults under 65 and 25.4 percent of toddlers aged 2-3 attending an appointment to receive their free vaccine. The flu vaccine is available for free to people who belong to certain categories, including the age groups and categories mentioned above; frontline health and social care workers; and people with conditions including diabetes, asthma, kidney disease, or a lowered immune system. However, many high street pharmacies also make the vaccine available for everyone else too, as a paid for service. Greece to Face Higher Costs if It Rejects Russian Gas – Russian AmbassadorThe Minnesota Vikings did what they needed to do to set up a winner-take-all Week 18 showdown with the Detroit Lions. By dispatching the Green Bay Packers on Sunday, the Vikings climbed to 14-2 and are poised to face the Lions next week with the NFC North title and, more importantly, the conference’s top seed on the line. The winner gets the coveted first-round bye, while the loser will have to go on the road for a wild-card playoff game. Advertisement Meanwhile, in the AFC, there isn’t much intrigue left — at least not at the top. The Kansas City Chiefs locked up the No. 1 seed with a win over the Steelers on Christmas, while the Buffalo Bills secured the No. 2 seed by trouncing the New York Jets on Sunday. The Baltimore Ravens and Steelers are still battling for the AFC North crown and the No. 3 seed, while the AFC South champion Houston Texans are locked into the No. 4 position. As for the wild-card race, the Denver Broncos can clinch the final spot with a win next week over a Chiefs team that will likely be resting its starters. However, if they lose, the Cincinnati Bengals or Miami Dolphins could still sneak in. Here’s a closer look at where things stand with only the Monday night matchup (Detroit at San Francisco) remaining in Week 17. Listed odds to make the playoffs, secure the No. 1 seed and win the Super Bowl are all via The Athletic’ s NFL Projection Model , created by Austin Mock. x — Clinched playoff berth | z — Clinched division title | * — Clinched No. 1 seed Kansas City Chiefs The Chiefs secured the No. 1 seed for the fourth time in the Patrick Mahomes era (2018, 2020, 2022, 2024), but they’ve only won the Super Bowl in one of those previous occasions (2022). They rested their starters in the 2020 regular-season finale, which was the only prior instance when the top seed had been locked up early. There’s an obvious merit to doing so with Mahomes recovering from a high ankle sprain. With the Bills securing the No. 2 seed, it’s worth noting the Chiefs were 7-0 against the Texans, Steelers, Ravens, Chargers, Broncos and Bengals this season — six potential divisional-round opponents. They could also see the Dolphins. Mahomes is 3-0 in his career against them, including a playoff victory last season. There’s a possible added benefit to that strategy for the Patriots, who just took control of the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. If they get it, they could put it up for auction to a QB-desperate team. If the Ravens take care of business, it’s fitting they’re on a collision course with the Bills in the divisional round. MVP favorites Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen met once before in the postseason, with the Bills winning 17-3 four years ago. There are some MVP stakes on the line next week, too, with the Ravens likely needing to start Jackson and the Bills hypothetically resting Allen. Remaining schedule: vs. Browns Odds: To make playoffs: 100% | To earn bye: 0% | To win Super Bowl: 8.3% Houston Texans The Texans have lost two in a row and are coming off a low point with an embarrassing 31-2 home defeat to the Ravens. They’re leaking with losses in five of eight, and there’s going to be a mad dash for the No. 5 seed to draw the Texans in the playoff opener. But maybe there’s hope in Houston, as the Texans have only gone one-and-done in two of their seven playoff appearances. Remaining schedule: at Titans Odds: To make playoffs: 100% | To earn bye: 0% | To win Super Bowl: 2% Pittsburgh Steelers The Steelers’ three-game losing streak is the longest among teams currently in the playoff field, and things have crumbled on both sides of the ball. They’ve been outscored 90-40 over that stretch. Sure, they’ve played some of the best teams in the league (Eagles, Ravens, Chiefs) during the skid, but that’s more ominous about their chances in January than an excuse for a slump in December. With a dangerous Bengals team on tap next week, the Steelers’ freefall is in danger of continuing. Here’s a dream scenario for coach Jim Harbaugh’s squad: If they beat the Raiders Week 18, and the Steelers fall to the Bengals, the Chargers will set up a trip to Houston with a chance to get a third crack at the Chiefs in the divisional round. The Chargers were swept by Kansas City this season, but they only lost both games by a combined nine points and would be entering Arrowhead on a four-game winning streak with the Chiefs not having played a meaningful game in three weeks. Should Cowboys keep McCarthy? Philadelphia Eagles The Eagles locked up the NFC East title and the No. 2 seed Sunday by blowing out the Cowboys without even needing quarterback Jalen Hurts, who was out with a concussion. Now the focus is on running back Saquon Barkley , as he’ll enter Week 18 with 2,005 rushing yards — 101 short of breaking Eric Dickerson’s single-season record — and he can do it against his former team. The RB eclipsed that mark 11 times this season, including 176 yards earlier this season against the Giants. It’d be a huge honor for Barkley and that offensive line, but there’s a mountain of risk that comes with that pursuit. If Barkley goes down in a meaningless game, Eagles fans won’t ever forgive coach Nick Sirianni. Advertisement Remaining schedule: vs. Giants Odds: To make playoffs: 100% | To earn bye: 0% | To win Super Bowl: 9.3% Los Angeles Rams After quarterback Matthew Stafford’s high-level play rescued the Rams from a 1-4 start, it was the defense that’s vaulted them to the NFC West title. The Rams have won their last three games by a combined score of 44-24. If they beat the Seahawks next week, the Rams will lock up the No. 3 seed, which would be an impressive accomplishment after failing to win a playoff game in the two seasons since winning the Super Bowl. Remaining schedule: vs. Seahawks Odds: To make playoffs: 100% | To earn bye: 0% | To win Super Bowl: 4.7% Tampa Bay Buccaneers The Bucs will lock up the NFC South with a win against the Saints or a Falcons loss to the Panthers. Tampa Bay offensive coordinator Liam Coen should be sending a holiday card to Commanders running back Chris Rodriguez, who starred for him when he was the OC at Kentucky. Rodriguez scored the Commanders’ final touchdown of the fourth quarter and made a key 12-yard catch in overtime in their 30-24 victory Sunday against the Falcons, who would have kept their NFC South lead with a win. Remaining schedule: vs. Saints Odds: To make playoffs: 87.8% | To earn bye: 0% | To win Super Bowl: 2.6% Detroit Lions The Lions have a meaningless NFC Championship Game rematch Monday night against the 49ers. Regardless of the result, the Lions and Vikings will square off next week with the No. 1 seed on the line. Consider the stakes, as there’s a real scenario where the team with the third-best record in the NFL has to open the playoffs on the road as the NFC’s No. 5 seed. They’ve won four consecutive games after that disconcerting three-game losing streak, and the Commanders will be aiming for their first playoff victory in 19 years. The Commanders will take the No. 6 seed with a win or a Packers loss. The loss may come back to bite the Packers, too, if they can’t reclaim the No. 6 seed because there’s now a strong chance they’ll open the postseason against the Eagles, who beat the Packers in Week 1. Scottie Barnes, wearing protective goggles with red frames, returned to the Raptors (4-12) lineup for the first time since he fractured his right orbital bone on Oct. 28. Barnes finished with 17 points, six assists, and three rebounds in 27 minutes of play. Jakob Poeltl had a double-double with 15 points and 12 boards and Montreal’s Chris Boucher came off the bench for 22 points. Anthony Edwards scored 26 points, including 11 in the third quarter, to keep Minnesota (8-7) in the game. Julius Randle had 23 points and nine rebounds, while Jaden McDaniels scored 22 points and also pulled down seven boards. Barnes was injured in the fourth quarter of Toronto’s 127-125 overtime loss to the Nuggets when he caught an errant elbow from Denver centre Nikola Jokic. Barnes was expected to be out at least three weeks with the injury but came back slightly ahead of schedule. Rookie combo guard Ja’kobe Walter (sprained right shoulder) was also made available for the Raptors. He did not play in the game, however. Toronto wore its new City Edition jerseys for the first time. The black jerseys feature a bright red Raptor in the midst of a between-the-legs jam, like Vince Carter’s iconic move from the 2000 NBA Slam Dunk Contest. Takeaways Minnesota: Edwards got off to an uncharacteristically slow start to the game, scoring only five points in the first half and quickly getting up to four personal fouls. Despite being so close to foulling out of the game, Edwards became more aggressive and helped the Timberwolves take a lead in the third quarter. Toronto: Although Barnes is unquestionably the best player on the Raptors, his re-integration into the lineup wasn’t seamless with Toronto’s offence looking disjointed for long stretches with 17 turnovers. Poeltl’s usage dropped significantly with Barnes once again becoming the focal point of the offence. Key moment Boucher’s dunk with 6:38 left in the game sparked a 17-4 Raptors run that erased a two-point deficit and gave Toronto a 105-96 lead with 2:31 on the clock. Gradey Dick’s defensive rebound and lob to Barrett for a crowd-pleasing dunk put an exclamation mark on that run, with the 19,296 fans at Scotiabank Arena rising to their feet as Barrett flexed and shouted. Minnesota called a timeout to try and kill Toronto’s momentum after the highlight-reel play. Key stat Toronto shot an excellent 51.4 per cent on field goals, but didn’t get up as many attempts as the Timberwolves, who outscored the Raptors despite shooting 41.3 per cent from the floor. Up next The Raptors travel to Cleveland to take on the NBA-best Cavaliers. Minnesota continues its Eastern Conference road trip with a stop in Boston against the NBA champion Celtics. TEHRAN - The Israeli regime makes the most of the instability in Syria to expand its expansionist project. As insecurity and a power vacuum emerged in the Arab state after armed groups took control of state institutions, the Israelis seized on the crisis. Israeli tanks were seen crossing into the outskirts of the southeastern Syrian province of Quneitra on Sunday, with shelling heard in the area. The Israeli occupation forces also dispatched infantry to a buffer zone in the occupied Syrian Golan Heights, the regime’s military confirmed on Sunday. The occupation army said it would remain in Syrian territory for “as long as necessary” Hebrew media reported that Unit 5101, more commonly known as Shaldag, has reached the summit of Syria’s Mount Hermon in the Golan Heights. Analysts have said the land grab signals new Israeli ambitions to occupy and annex large parts of Syria after the fall of its government. It is the first time Israeli forces have taken up positions beyond the buffer zone since it was established in 1974. The regime further exploited the crisis in Syria with airstrikes on key sites. Israel’s air raids on the Mazzeh district of the capital, Damascus, with explosions heard in the vicinity. Separately, regional intelligence sources told news agencies that Israeli fighter jets targeted the Syrian air base of Khalkhala in southern Syria. By Sunday evening, Israeli warplanes bombarded more Syrian army sites in Damascus. The lightening developments in Syria have sparked widespread comment across Israeli politics. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hailed the fall of President Assad as a “historic day.” “This of course creates new, very important opportunities for Israel,” he said. Opposition leader Yair Lapid said they showed why “it is more important than ever to create a strong regional coalition, with Saudi Arabia and the countries of the Abraham Accords, to work together”. “The Iranian axis has weakened significantly, and Israel needs to strive for an overall political achievement,” he added. Other Israeli politicians called on the government in Tel Aviv to take control of the entire Golan Heights. Government minister Amichai Chikli wrote in a social media post that there must be a new Israeli “defense zone” at the 1974 ceasefire line. A member of the Israeli parliament, the Knesset, Tzvi Succot, echoed those comments, saying this measure would be “immense” during a time when the political and military cost “is likely lower than ever”. Meanwhile, former Israeli military intelligence officer Lieutenant Colonel, Mordechai Kedar, was interviewed on Sunday by Hebrew media, Kan Reshet Bet, where he claimed: “I am in contact with the rebels in Syria and I have passed a detailed list of equipment they requested from Israel to senior officials in the country. The rebels are willing to sign a peace agreement with Israel, only if they control Syria and Lebanon.” The Israeli spy agency, Mossad, was also thrilled with the fall of Homs, a clear sign highlighting how significant this development was to the security of the regime. In a post on social media, a Mossad-affiliated channel wrote: “Homs, the corridor used by Iran to bring weapons to Hezbollah, is no longer active.” The post added: "Amazing". There is no credible evidence that Iran had used the city of Homs to transfer weapons to the Lebanese resistance movement Hezbollah. Experts say militants operating in Syria had previously received medical treatment at field hospitals in the occupied Golan as well as in the Israeli city of Safed. Time will tell what the intentions of this latest mixture of armed groups are. Some have lately vowed to have a more moderate outlook with neighbors in the region and are no longer associated with Daesh and al-Qaeda. Whether this outlook serves Israeli interests is a key factor as most countries in West Asia believe the Israeli regime is the source of instability in the region.
What’s going on at Bucklebury Common?Indonesia’s decision to pursue membership in BRICS – an emerging economy bloc comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa – signals that President Prabowo Subianto is steering foreign policy in a direction contrasting with his predecessors. During Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s two-term administration, then-former Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi led efforts to integrate Indonesia’s economy with Western institutions by working to secure membership with the OECD. Since BRICS is an alternative to Western-dominated organisations , many observers scrutinised and questioned Indonesia’s nonalignment commitment. However, Foreign Minister Sugiono argued that BRICS aligns with Indonesia’s ‘free and active’ foreign policy, allowing Indonesia to collaborate widely without aligning too closely with any single bloc. For Sugiono, joining BRICS means paving the way to advance the new government’s goals of food security, energy independence, poverty alleviation, and human capital development. The bloc offers access to funding, technology, and trade opportunities to tackle key challenges in those sectors. BRICS, with its emphasis on fairness and cooperation, supports Indonesia’s vision for a more inclusive and sustainable future. The shift from Retno’s OECD focus to Sugiono’s BRICS approach reflects at least two visions. First, Indonesia seeks to reassess its strategic position as the leading economy in Southeast Asia. Second, the country seeks to switch from its nonalignment stance to multi-alignment . The later will help navigate partnerships with both developed and emerging economies , balancing traditional alliances with new opportunities. Joining BRICS can amplify Indonesia’s influence in its already strong ties with each of the member countries and unlock opportunities beyond one-on-one partnerships. Fear of missing out Indonesia’s pivot to BRICS reflects both its relationship with major powers, such as China and the US, and regional pressures. Neighbouring countries Malaysia and Thailand have recently expressed interest in BRICS, creating a sense of competition within Southeast Asia. Both countries joining the bloc could erode Indonesia’s leadership and influence in the region, especially in affecting global affairs. Through ASEAN, Indonesia has sought to act as a regional stabiliser and mediator amid rising polarisation between the West and China . As its de facto leader, Indonesia has historically championed initiatives like the South China Sea Code of Conduct and Myanmar’s peace process. Its G20 presidency further underscored its role as a mediator between global powers. This ‘fear of missing out’ has spurred Indonesia’s interest in BRICS. Joining BRICS ahead of its regional peers ensures that Indonesia maintains its leadership position in ASEAN. For Prabowo’s administration, BRICS offers a platform to advance Indonesia’s interests in maritime security, economic growth, and global governance. It is a strategic move beyond an economic decision to amplify its voice on global issues and prevent fellow Southeast Asian countries from overtaking it in shaping the bloc’s agenda. Bold (but not one) direction Indonesia’s BRICS membership announcement highlights the new administration’s foreign policy ambitions, centred on two key shifts: adopting a multi-alignment strategy and strengthening its ‘good neighbour’ policy. Prabowo envisions engaging with all nations, fostering friendly relations while opposing oppression. This approach resonates with Indonesia’s historical commitment to sovereignty and equality in international relations. Indonesia has traditionally adhered to a nonalignment principle . This virtue has aided the country navigating major power blocs without binding itself to any single alliance. However, the current geopolitical climate – marked by intensifying tensions between global powers, regional conflicts, and intricate challenges – demands a more flexible and strategic approach. By joining BRICS, Indonesia avoids taking sides and instead diversifies its partnerships to maximise benefits. This multi-aligned approach enables active participation in BRICS discussions on multilateral reform. Prabowo’s ‘ good neighbour policy ’ further underscores the importance of maintaining positive relations with all countries. It empowers developing nations and advocates for a more equitable global order and economic system. This strategy also facilitates Indonesia’s resilience by fostering partnerships in food and energy security, poverty alleviation, and human capital development . Such collaborations reduce reliance on Western financial systems and enhance Indonesia’s autonomy. Ultimately, these strategic directions position Indonesia as a sovereign and dynamic player capable of balancing global relationships while advancing its own priorities . What about the OECD? This move does not mean the OECD is off the table for Indonesia. Instead, Prabowo’s approach reflects a dual-track strategy that values both alliances for their respective benefits. The OECD remains a long-term objective to enhance Indonesia’s economic governance and regulatory standards. It serves the goal of providing the country with stable relationships within the Western economic framework. Meanwhile, BRICS offers an immediate avenue for Indonesia to deepen ties with equivalent economies and actively shape policies that impact the Global South. Sugiono’s statement in Kazan emphasised Indonesia’s commitment to engaging in other forums, including the G20 and OECD discussions. It highlighted the country’s flexibility in international alliances. This dual-track strategy reinforces Indonesia’s role as a bridge between developed and developing nations, maximising the benefits of both alliances without sacrificing its autonomy. What’s next for Indonesia? Indonesia’s decision to join BRICS marks a significant evolution in its foreign policy. By participating in BRICS, Indonesia positions itself as a critical player in global discussions on economic reform and development, asserting its voice within a multi-polar world order. Indonesia is charting a path that balances traditional alliances with emerging opportunities, reinforcing its role as a dynamic, independent player on the world stage.
