During the launch of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence (GBV) on Monday, November 25, Gilbert Munyemana, NCDA’s Deputy Director General, pointed at the role of positive parenting for GBV-free families, noting that it is essential for nurturing mental health, emotional well-being, and decision-making skills in children. “It lays the foundation for a confident, disciplined, and independent generation. By creating a safe, supportive environment, free from all forms of violence, positive parenting helps children reach their full potential,” he said. Recognising that some parents may, unfortunately, feel inclined to raise their children the way they were raised, he highlighted that parents should make an effort to give their children better treatment so that they have better livelihoods. “Our children have the potential to become even better than we were, provided we offer them opportunities and allow them to grow in safe, supportive, and healthy environments. By doing so, we can break the cycle of violence and create a brighter future for the next generation,” he said. ALSO READ: The pervasive reality of gender- based violence in Rwanda, globally Reverien Interayamahanga, a social researcher, speaking at the same event, said it is crucial to prevent the parents’ separation effect from children, because it can have long-lasting negative effects on the children’s emotional and mental well-being. “Over time, cases of parental separation, whether through court decisions or personal disputes, often result in one parent undermining the other by portraying them in a negative light to the child. This can lead to significant emotional confusion and distress for the child, who may begin to view the other parent in an unfavourable light or even feel abandoned,” he said. “Such circumstances can create deep emotional scars, where children either reject the concept of family altogether or grow up feeling unloved by the parent they are distanced from. The psychological impact can lead to feelings of betrayal, resentment, and insecurity, affecting the child's ability to form healthy relationships in the future,” he added. Regardless of the parents’ relationship status, Interayamahanga said, it is essential to create supportive environments where both parents remain involved in their child's life. “Maintaining a positive co-parenting dynamic, we can help children develop a healthy sense of identity and foster a more inclusive, supportive family structure,” he said. Immacule Uwamariya, the Headmistress of Saint Bernard de Kansi, said children who experience family issues often carry the emotional and psychological burden of those situations into school. “The challenges they face at home, whether it is conflict, neglect, or exposure to violence, can deeply affect their mental state and behaviour. This emotional strain can make it difficult for children to concentrate, engage with their studies, or develop healthy relationships with peers,” she said. “As a result, these children may struggle academically, and their performance may suffer, not because of a lack of potential but because the unresolved issues at home are hindering their ability to thrive in a school environment,” she added. ALSO READ: Addressing technology-facilitated gender-based violence in Rwanda The say’s conversations shed light on the four main parenting styles and their effects on children, calling upon parents to use the most effective one. The styles that were highlighted include authoritative parenting which is characterised by high levels of warmth and responsiveness combined with clear, consistent rules and expectations. “This form of parenting enables children with a higher self-esteem and self-discipline, better social skills and emotional regulation, strong academic performance and problem-solving abilities and a sense of security and trust in relationships because children thrive in an environment where they feel heard and supported, yet understanding the boundaries,” said Munyemana. The authoritarian parenting style involves strict rules and high demands, with little warmth or flexibility. Parents expect obedience and may use punishment rather than discussion to enforce rules. “This, on the other hand, lowers self-esteem and increases fear of failure in children, difficulty in social situations and making independent decisions and higher likelihood of anxiety, depression, or rebellion because lack of warmth and overly strict rules can hinder a child’s emotional development and creativity.” Permissive parenting, also highlighted at the event, is a style where parents are warm and nurturing but set few boundaries or rules. They avoid confrontation and may prioritise being their child’s friend over being a disciplinarian. “This may develop strong self-esteem but lack discipline and responsibility, difficulty respecting authority or dealing with frustration and increased risk of behavioural problems and poor academic performance,” said Munyemana. Under the neglectful parenting style, parents are detached and provide little warmth, guidance, or attention. Basic needs may be met, but emotional engagement is lacking. “This causes low self-esteem and difficulty forming healthy relationships, poor academic performance and emotional regulation and increased risk of substance abuse, mental health issues, and delinquency,” he said. “Children in such environments often feel unsupported, leading to insecurity and low self-worth,” he added. Thousands of protesters marched through Barcelona on Saturday demanding lower rents in Spain's second city. Barcelona, which has already taken action to stop the spread of holiday rental apartments, is the latest Spanish city to see protests for cheaper housing. Backed by left-wing parties and unions, the demonstrators gathered in central Barcelona behind a giant banner declaring "Lower the rents". "Today a new political cycle starts concerning housing," Carme Arcarazo, spokesperson for the Catalan Tenants Union, the main organiser, told reporters. "Investors must not be allowed to come to our cities and play with the apartments like a game of Monopoly," she added. The union would target "profiteers" who are taking "half of our salaries", Arcarazo said. The demonstrators demanded a 50 percent cut in rents, leases with an unlimited term and a ban on "speculative" sales of buildings. They threatened to start a rent strike. An estimated 22,000 people took part in a similar demonstration in Madrid on October 13. Campaigns have been launched in other cities. According to the Idealista specialised website, rental prices per square metre have risen 82 percent across Spain over the past decade. The average salary has gone up by 17 percent in that time, according to the national statistics institute. Facing pressure over a housing crisis, the government in 2023 passed legislation calling for more social housing, greater restrictions on rents in high demand areas and penalties for owners who do not occupy properties. But rents have continued to rise while the government has battled city and regional authorities to get some parts of the law applied. vid-vab/tw/jm

Big Lots said it will be sold to Gordon Brothers Retail Partners, which specializes in distressed companies. Gordon Brothers will then transfer Big Lots’ stores to other retailers. Variety Wholesalers, which owns more than 400 U.S. discount stores, plans to acquire between 200 and 400 Big Lots stores and operate them under the Big Lots brand. Big Lots filed for bankruptcy protection in September, saying inflation and high interest rates had cut back on consumer demand for its furniture and other products. Trump asks Supreme Court to delay TikTok ban so he can weigh in after he takes office President-elect Donald Trump has asked the Supreme Court to pause the potential TikTok ban from going into effect until his administration can pursue a “political resolution” to the issue. Trump's request Friday came as TikTok and the Biden administration filed opposing briefs to the court. Oral arguments are scheduled for Jan. 10 on whether the law, which requires TikTok to divest from its China-based parent company or face a ban, unlawfully restricts speech in violation of the First Amendment. The brief said Trump opposes banning TikTok at this junction and “seeks the ability to resolve the issues at hand through political means once he takes office.” Stock market today: Wall Street slips as the 'Magnificent 7' weighs down the market NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks are closing lower as Wall Street ends a holiday-shortened week on a down note. The S&P 500 fell 1.1% Friday and the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 333 points, or 0.8%. The Nasdaq composite dropped 1.5%. The “Magnificent 7” stocks weighed on the market, led by declines in Nvidia, Tesla and Microsoft. Even with the loss, the S&P 500 had a modest gain for the week and is still headed for its second consecutive annual gain of more than 20%, the first time that has happened since 1997-1998. The yield on the 10-year Treasury rose to 4.62%. 10 tips from experts to help you change your relationship with money in 2025 NEW YORK (AP) — As the calendar changes to 2025, you might be thinking about how to approach your relationship with money in the new year. Janet Yellen tells Congress US could hit debt limit in mid-January WASHINGTON (AP) — Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen says her agency will need to start taking “extraordinary measures,” or special accounting maneuvers intended to prevent the nation from hitting the debt ceiling, as early as January 14th, in a letter sent to congressional leaders Friday afternoon. The department has taken such action in the past. But once those measures run out the government risks defaulting on its debt unless lawmakers and the president agree to lift the limit on the U.S. government’s ability to borrow. An online debate over foreign workers in tech shows tensions in Trump's political coalition WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — An online spat between factions of Donald Trump’s supporters over immigration and the tech industry has thrown internal divisions in the president-elect’s political movement into public display. The argument previews fissures and contradictory views his coalition could bring to the White House. The rift laid bare tensions between the newest flank of Trump’s movement — that is, wealthy members of the tech world who want more highly skilled workers in their industry — and people in Trump’s Make America Great Again base who championed his hardline immigration policies. A 9th telecoms firm has been hit by a massive Chinese espionage campaign, the White House says WASHINGTON (AP) — A top White House official says a ninth U.S. telecoms firm has been confirmed to have been hacked as part of a sprawling Chinese espionage campaign that gave officials in Beijing access to private texts and phone conversations of an unknown number of Americans. Administration officials said this month that at least eight telecommunications companies, as well as dozens of nations, had been affected by the Chinese hacking blitz known as Salt Typhoon. But Anne Neuberger, a deputy national security adviser, said Friday that a ninth victim had been identified after the administration released guidance to companies about how to hunt for Chinese culprits in their networks. Canadian Cabinet ministers meet with Trump's nominee for commerce secretary in bid to avoid tariffs TORONTO (AP) — Two top Canadian Cabinet ministers have met with President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee for commerce secretary at Mar-a-Lago as Canada tries to avoid sweeping tariffs when Trump takes office. New Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc and Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly met with Howard Lutnick, Trump’s nominee for commerce secretary, as well as North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum, Trump’s pick to lead the Interior Department. The meeting was a follow up to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s meeting with Trump at Mar-a-Lago last month. Trump has threatened to impose sweeping tariffs if Canada does not stem what he calls a flow of migrants and fentanyl into the United States. Most Americans blame insurance profits and denials alongside the killer in UHC CEO death, poll finds WASHINGTON (AP) — Most Americans believe health insurance profits and coverage denials share responsibility for the killing of UnitedHealthcare’s CEO — although not as much as the person who pulled the trigger. So says a new poll from NORC at the University of Chicago. It finds that about 8 in 10 Americans say that the person who committed the killing has “a great deal” or “a moderate amount” of responsibility for the Dec. 4 shooting of Brian Thompson. Still, some see suspect Luigi Mangione as a heroic figure. About 7 in 10 adults say coverage denials or health insurance profits also bear at least “a moderate amount” of responsibility for Thompson’s death. Another jackpot surpasses $1 billion. Is this the new normal? Remember this moment because it probably won’t last: A U.S. lottery jackpot has soared above $1 billion, and that’s still a big deal. After three months without anyone winning the top prize, a ticket worth an estimated $1.22 billion was sold in California for the drawing Friday night. The high number has evoked headlines and likely lured more people to convenience stores with dreams of private spacewalks above the Earth. Jonathan Cohen is the author of the book “For a Dollar and a Dream: State Lotteries in Modern America.” He says he expects jackpots to continue to grow in size. Larger payouts attract more media attention, increase ticket sales and bring in new players.

The company that owns Stop & Shop — as well as other major grocers, like Food Lion , Giant Food & Hannaford , Ahold Delhaize USA — says that their brands are open and serving customers, and that e-commerce channels are active. But the cyber attack put a major dent into the logistical side of keeping the store shelves stocked. With the data breach, distribution troubles developed, and some Stop & Shop locations shelves were starting to go bare. The company says several Ahold Delhaize USA brands and services, including some pharmacies and certain e-commerce operations, were affected. Stop & Shop has just announced that, for the most part, the logistics have been figured out, and shelves should be back to normal just in time for Thanksgiving shopping. One glimmer of good news is that frozen items like turkey and ham are sent to stores well in advance of the holidays, as they can keep longer. The major threat to their supply chain would have been other Thanksgiving dinner items, such as produce, stuffing and desserts. Ahold Delhaize USA said that they reported the cyberattack to law enforcement and are complying with them to help get to the bottom of the situation. Isaac Guerendo is only seven games into his NFL career and has registered double-digit carries in just two of them. Still, San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan has seen enough from the fourth-round rookie to be confident he is ready for the opportunity that now awaits him. Guerendo will be the 49ers' lead back after Christian McCaffrey was placed on injured reserve, with Jordan Mason set to follow him because of a high ankle sprain. The former Louisville and Wisconsin back, who wowed at the Scouting Combine with an outstanding workout that included a 40-yard dash of 4.3 seconds, has sporadically displayed his big-play ability in his first season. Guerendo had a 76-yard run against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 6 and went for 85 yards and a touchdown in a win over the Dallas Cowboys two weeks later. Guerendo scored the 49ers' only touchdown in their blowout loss to the Buffalo Bills last Sunday and, speaking ahead of their Week 14 meeting with the Chicago Bears, Shanahan expressed faith in a player for whom San Francisco traded up in this year's draft. "I think he's ready to go," head coach Kyle Shanahan said on Wednesday. "He got off to a late start with injuries in preseason. I thought he finished in those games, especially that [93-yard] kick return he had versus the Raiders, I think. He did some decent things when he started out. Didn't get a lot of carries, had some ups and downs, but got better through everything. "And then, when he got the bulk of the carries—I want to say some more versus Seattle—he only got better, and he's gotten better throughout the year. So I think he's ready for this." Shanahan had specific praise for how Guerendo has developed in terms of his decisiveness hitting the running lanes, adding: "I think it takes guys some time. You start to get a feel for it, if you've got the right stuff, the more you get reps, the more you can adjust to it, how hard you got to hit stuff, how quick those holes close, how, when there is a hole, how you have to hit at full speed and can't hesitate at all or it closes like that. "So we've seen that stuff get better in practice, and we've seen it carry over to games." The 49ers on Tuesday claimed Israel Abanikanda off waivers from the New York Jets to help fill out their backfield, and they made more moves on Wednesday, promoting Patrick Taylor Jr. from the practice squad, to which they signed Ke'Shawn Vaughn. Their running back room looks substantially different than it did when the 49ers initially set about preparing for Week 1 still believing McCaffrey could play. But, with Guerendo leading the way, there's still optimism it can be a productive group over these final five weeks of the season. Starting safety Reed Blankenship (concussion) and starting tight end Dallas Goedert (knee) were among four players who did not practice on Wednesday. Wide receiver Britain Covey (neck) and safety Sydney Brown (knee) were also sidelined. Cornerback Darius Slay (concussion), running back Saquon Saquon (rest), right guard Mekhi Becton (knee/rest), defensive tackle Jalen Carter (rest), outside linebacker Josh Sweat (rest), and wide receiver Johnny Wilson (hamstring) were limited on Wednesday. The good news is that No. 2 wide receiver DeVonta Smith (hamstring) was a full participant after missing the last two games. Eagles Week 14 Injury Report Observations The Eagles are said to be monitoring Jalen Hurts and running back Saquon Barkley's health closely so it will be normal for either or both of them to kick off the week limited moving forward. Reed Blankenship suffered a concussion while Dallas Goedert hurt his knee in the Eagles' Week 13 win over the Baltimore Ravens . With Goedert dealing with an injury, the Eagles signed tight end C.J. Uzomah to the 53-man roster. Per a report from Eagles insider Jeff McLane, Goedert could be sidelined on a "week-to-week" basis. The Eagles also signed wide receiver Parris Campbell back to the practice squad and fullback Khari Blasingame. Sydney Brown was on last week's injury report with the same knee injury. He did end up suiting up against Baltimore. Wide receiver Johnny Wilson was ruled out last Sunday so it's good to see him back at practice. Cornerback Darius Slay has been on and off the injury report this season with a lingering knee issue. He suffered this concussion in Week 12's win over the LA Rams. Pending what happens with Blankenship and Brown this week, the Eagles could lean more on backup Tristan McCollum. Britain Covey 's neck injury isn't anything to be concerned about right now but rookie Cooper DeJean is a solid backup on punt return.
