Call it an unfortunate sign of the times that the Erie County DA’s Office’s White Collar Crimes Bureau is seeing an increase in incidents where senior citizens are preyed upon by professional scammers and are asked to give up money or other vital information such as social security or credit card numbers. The premise is that a grandchild or some other family member has been arrested or is in trouble and needs bail-out money. Sometimes the caller alleges they are from the IRS or a financial institution and looking for immediate payments. It’s not just an Erie County or Western New York thing, it is happening with more frequency around the country. Erie County DA Michael Keane says that information or money transfers should never take place because of a phone call. “They’ll pretend like they’re a grandson and say Grandma I’ve been arrested please help me, that kind of thing,” Keane said. “The thing we try to point out to the senior citizen population is that no legitimate person is ever going to ask for your social security number or bank information over the phone.” Keane said he routinely sends his staff to area senior centers to explain and warn about these types of nefarious calls. The number of these incidents continues to rise as scammers use more complex methods including the use of computers and social media outlets. And, for Keane, he recognizes these incidents aren’t just about money. They can have a lasting psychological impact on the victims. “It goes back to the urgency; they’re basically telling people that if they don’t act now that something bad is going to happen to you for your grandson, that kind of thing puts them in an emotional state and then they panic, and they make a decision that they wouldn’t if they were to just take a minute to talk to someone that they trust,” Keane said. Keane’s advice: Never ever give out any vital information over the phone, no matter how legitimate the caller may sound. Be smart. It comes shortly after his wife Georgia Kousoulou gave fans an update, confirming their baby daughter would be home in time for Christmas . After Georgia’s statement, Tommy took to the social media site to post a picture of himself with children Gigi and Brody, as they smiled with their thumbs up. “Perfection,” he wrote in the caption. Tommy could be seen wearing matching festive pyjamas with his son, while Gigi was wrapped up in a pink blanket embroidered with her birthday. The snap was filled with comments of love from fans, as one wrote: “So glad you are all back together for Christmas now Gigi is on the mend. Xx.” A second penned: “So pleased Gigi’s home.” Last week, Georgia revealed that their three week old baby had been taken to hospital with bronchitis. She revealed that the illness had worsened to the point where Gigi needed oxygen support, making it an incredibly anxious time for the family. Thankfully, after days filled with stress and uncertainty, Gigi was able to return home. Days later, she shared snaps of Gigi with nasogastric tubes, alongside the caption: "Time to get you home for Christmas, baby girl. After a long stressful week in hospital, Gigi is allowed home. Gigi’s bronchitis got worse, and she needed to be on oxygen. What I’ve learnt most is always go with your gut, and if you think your baby isn’t well, always check it out!” The mother of two also praised the hospital, continuing: “Thank you to the nurses & doctors at princess Alexandra hospital in Harlow . They were incredible with GIGI. Kyiv: NATO and Ukraine will hold emergency talks on Tuesday after Russia attacked a central city with an experimental, hypersonic ballistic missile that escalated the nearly 33-month-old war. The conflict is “entering a decisive phase”, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said Friday, and “taking on very dramatic dimensions”. ‘We have this system now’: Russian President Vladimir Putin. In a stark warning to the West, Russian President Vladimir Putin said in a nationally televised speech that the attack with the intermediate-range Oreshnik missile was in retaliation for Kyiv’s use of US and British longer-range missiles capable of striking deeper into Russian territory. Putin said Western air defence systems would be powerless to stop the new missile. Ukrainian military officials said the missile that hit Dnipro had reached a speed of Mach 11 and carried six nonnuclear warheads, each releasing six submunitions. Speaking Friday to military and weapons industries officials, Putin said Russia is launching production of the Oreshnik. “No one in the world has such weapons,” he said with a thin smile. “Sooner or later other leading countries will also get them. We are aware that they are under development.” But, he added, “We have this system now. And this is important.” Testing the missile will continue, Putin said, “including in combat, depending on the situation and the character of security threats created for Russia”. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, widely seen as having the warmest relations with the Kremlin in the European Union, echoed Moscow’s talking points, suggesting the use of US-supplied weapons in Ukraine likely requires direct American involvement. “These are rockets that are fired and then guided to a target via an electronic system, which requires the world’s most advanced technology and satellite communications capability,” Orban said on state radio. “There is a strong assumption ... that these missiles cannot be guided without the assistance of American personnel.” Orban cautioned against underestimating Russia’s responses, emphasising that the country’s recent modifications to its nuclear deployment doctrine should not be dismissed as a “bluff.” “It’s not a trick ... there will be consequences,” he said. Separately in Kyiv, Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavsky called Thursday’s missile strike an “escalatory step and an attempt of the Russian dictator to scare the population of Ukraine and to scare the population of Europe”. At a news conference with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, Lipavsky also expressed his full support for delivering the necessary additional air defence systems to protect Ukrainian civilians from the “heinous attacks”. He underlined that the Czech Republic will impose no limits on the use of its weapons and equipment given to Ukraine. Three lawmakers from Ukraine’s parliament, the Verkhovna Rada, confirmed that Friday’s previously scheduled session was called off due to the ongoing threat of Russian missiles targeting government buildings in central Kyiv. There was also a recommendation to limit the work of all commercial offices and non-governmental organisations “in that perimeter, and local residents were warned of the increased threat,” said lawmaker Mykyta Poturaiev, who added this is not the first time such a threat has been received. President Volodymyr Zelensky’s office continued to work in compliance with standard security measures, a spokesperson said. Ukraine’s Main Intelligence Directorate said the Oreshnik missile, whose name in Russian means “hazelnut tree,” was fired from the Kapustin Yar 4th Missile Test Range in Russia’s Astrakhan region, and flew 15 minutes before striking Dnipro. Test launches of a similar missile were conducted in October 2023 and June 2024, the directorate said. The Pentagon confirmed the missile was a new, experimental type of intermediate-range missile based on its RS-26 Rubezh intercontinental ballistic missile. Thursday’s attack struck the Pivdenmash plant that built ICBMs when Ukraine was part of the Soviet Union. The military facility is located about 61⁄2 kilometres south-west of the centre of Dnipro, a city of about 1 million that is Ukraine’s fourth-largest and a key hub for military supplies and humanitarian aid. It is also home to one of the country’s largest hospitals for treating wounded soldiers from the front before their transfer to Kyiv or abroad. Such a situation with a brotherly Islamic country is not acceptable. War, violence and aggression are not solution to any problem. Pakistan and Afghanistan should put their concerns before each other,” he maintained. Meanwhile, PTI Information Secretary Sheikh Waqas Akram Friday underlined the need for course correction and introspection, as Pakistan and its 240 million people had been bearing the brunt of the state machinery’s wrong and misguided priorities since long. “It is the state’s responsibility to uphold justice and ensure fair play rather than resorting to intimidation, coercion and threat,” he said in reaction to the news conference of the director general ISPR earlier in the day. He emphasized that justice could not be served by making decisions with preconceived notions and biases, as such decisions could not be accepted as just. He contended that the power to punish or reward individuals lay solely with the judicial system, as mandated by the Constitution, warning that allowing defence institutions to establish their own courts would have devastating consequences for the state’s justice system and the constitutional framework as a whole. The PTI spokesman noted that this was precisely why decisions delivered by independent constitutional courts were universally recognized and respected, whereas those made by military courts were not accepted anywhere in the world. Waqas pointed out that the alarming decline in the state’s rational thinking, decision-making and overall governance had been the primary catalyst for the prevailing chaos and conflict plaguing the country. He argued that the state’s narrative, built on deeply flawed, unrealistic and hateful foundations, was the primary driver of escalating tensions and confrontation between the people and state institutions. Waqas warned that the growing trend of labeling critics of the government and its decision-makers as chaotic or anti-state would have disastrous repercussions for Pakistan. He said peaceful protest was a fundamental democratic and constitutional right of every political party; therefore, the government’s decision to block the PTI’s protest by placing shipping containers across the route was utterly incomprehensible and unjustified. He asked why Article 245 was invoked, roads blocked and peaceful and unarmed workers were arbitrarily detained and demonized, turning innocent citizens into perceived troublemakers. Waqas said millions of Pakistanis actively engaged in national discussions on the media and social media platforms, exercising their critical thinking and expressing their opinions based on their consciousness and available information under a modern and automated system. TORONTO — The Winnipeg Jets had payback on their minds and top spot in the National Hockey League in their final game before the holiday break. The Jets made good on both accounts with a 5-2 win against the Toronto Maple Leafs before 18,923 at Scotiabank Arena on Monday. The win avenged a 6-4 home loss to Toronto on Oct. 28, that halted the Jets' eight-game win streak to begin the season. It also pushed the Jets into first overall. "They don't hand out awards at Christmas, but obviously, we're happy," said Jets centre Mark Scheifele, who enjoyed a three-goal, four-point outing. "It's good to get a couple of days off, get recharged and get going for the next half of the season." Surprisingly, the Jets (25-10-1) are only one point ahead of the 36-game pace of 23-9-4 set a year ago. "We've been good from top to bottom and we need everybody in this group," said Kyle O'Connor, who scored the Jets first two goals and helped set up Scheifele for his first of three third-period goals. "I just think our ability to roll over lines and be hungry, and not to be satisfied with anything. We also have taken a day-to-day approach, learning what we can improve on from wins and losses and implementing the adjustments." Besides defeating the Maple Leafs after what transpired in late October, Scheifele had extra motivation after being left off Canada's roster for the 4 Nations Face-Off in February. In the 10 games since Canada's roster was announced, Scheifele has eight goals and 15 points. "You're disappointed, but at the end of the day, you just want to play well for your group of guys," Scheifele said. "There's always a bit of motivation you can draw from in every game. But it's just a matter of playing good for the Winnipeg Jets and controlling what I can control." He also enjoys playing in Toronto, an hour from his hometown of Kitchener. "I love coming to Toronto to have the opportunity to play in front of a lot of friends and family," Scheifele said. "Being so close to home, I get a little extra excited to play here. "I think the biggest thing is we didn't play our best when we played them last. We were excited to get another crack at them and how them the game we can play. All in all, it's a big win for us." MATTHEWS STILL OUT WITH INJURY While the Jets enter the Christmas break with back-to-back wins, the Maple Leafs dropped their second in a row at home without wounded captain Auston Matthews, out with an upper-body injury. "We just have to clean up some things off the rush, the transition part especially against a team that's obviously very good with their top line that takes advantage of time and space," said Maple Leafs centre John Tavares, who scored both Toronto goals. The Maple Leafs have gone 7-4-0 with Matthews on the sidelines this season and 42-23-2 in his career. Toronto was also missing defenceman Chris Tanev, out day-to-day with a lower-body ailment.
