The head of Scotland Yard said the force will be 'scaling back our ability to tackle serious violence and organised crime ' under plans to axe 2,300 officers and 400 staff due to a £450m budget 'black hole'. He warned that if the force doesn't get more funding, officers will have to 'set different thresholds for deployment' of specialist resources, with major cuts planned to a series of departments. Outlining plans for a 'worst case scenario' to tackle the Met's budget deficit, Sir Mark warned an axe could be taken to a series of departments including its famous Flying Squad robbery unit, which dates back to 1919. While the unit currently has a firearms capacity, the police chief warned this could be removed. He also warned of 'significant' cuts to dog units, the mounted branch and units policing London 's roads. Other changes which could come into force as early as January include making cuts to the teams that track down wanted offenders, with the report warning there would be 'less support for the frontline in targeting serious threats and potentially high-risk wanted persons remaining at large for longer'. Reductions in forensics teams managing areas like fingerprints and DNA are also envisaged, alongside axing the specialised teams that currently police the Royal Parks. 'We are going to have to change the service levels, so what we deploy mounted (police) to is going to be less than what we deploy mounted to at the moment. 'For example, work that our intelligence and specialist crime will do dealing with organised crime, gangs, serious violence, some of the top end offenders in violence against women and children, that amount of capacity and capability is going to be reduced. Originally formed in 1919 by Detective Chief Inspector Frederick Wensley, the Flying Squad has become one of the Met's most famous units. A unit of the Serious and Organised Crime Command, the Flying Squad's main role is to investigate robberies, and over the years it has been involved in some of Britain's most famous criminal cases, ranging from the Great Train Robbery to the Brink's-Mat heist. While 'traditional' armed robberies of banks and cash deposit vans are on the decline thanks to technological developments, modern-day officers are charged with countering more modern forms of offending, including muggings by moped gangs and luxury watch thieves dubbed 'Rolex rippers'. He said that there could be a 'reduction of about 200 officers in Essex' due to the budget shortfall, but cautioned: 'I want to be careful because I've not made decisions. 'The discussion is not finished but ultimately I may have to make choices about what services I can deliver. 'I don't want anyone to doubt, certainly the people of Essex, our commitment as a force to carry on reducing crime and anti-social behaviour, protecting victims, bringing people to justice and keeping the county safe. 'But the bottom line is... we've squeezed the lemon and it's pretty dry so there's not many more efficiencies to have around this. 'And ultimately if I've got less people they can work as hard as they can but if there's less of them they can only do less.' He said that around £27million of the £34million budget shortfall was pay, but he added that some officers had already left for higher pay elsewhere - with one officer leaving to become a train driver.
