Chennai: Tambaram Corporation has sanctioned a 19.75 crore road-laying project, but arterial and interior stretches in areas such as Pallavaram, Chromepet, Keelkattalai, and Perungalathur remain riddled with potholes. Residents claim the ongoing work fails to address the immediate problem of potholes, leaving many roads difficult to navigate. Under the Tamil Nadu Urban Road Infrastructure Project (TURIP), the corporation is laying 195 tar roads and 58 cement concrete roads. Officials claim that several roads have been completed, including 12.7 km in Pammal, 2 km in Pallavaram, 4 km in Sembakkam, and 1.5 km in Perungalathur. However, residents say the repairs are uneven and neglect the most problematic areas. In Chromepet, V Srinivasan, a bank employee, spoke of how his car broke down after hitting a water-filled pothole. "It's just 7 km from Selaiyur to Tambaram, but it takes nearly an hour due to numerous potholes and waterlogging," he said. K Rathi of KRS Nagar in West Tambaram says her commute to Keelkattalai is treacherous, especially during rains. "The potholes are invisible on rainy days, making it dangerous for two-wheelers. Complaints to local councillors are met with assurances, but nothing changes." Civic activists and residents are urging Tambaram Corporation to adopt modern equipment such as jet-patcher machines, which have proven effective in repairing potholes quickly and efficiently. Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) last year introduced jet-patcher machines that are capable of fixing around 50 potholes daily. These machines heat bitumen to the ideal temperature, spray it into potholes, and ensure proper adhesion within 10 minutes. By cutting potholes into precise geometric shapes, the process ensures long-lasting repairs without requiring full road relaying. "Jet-patcher machines are widely used globally for their speed and durability. Municipal bodies such as Tambaram Corporation should invest in such sustainable solutions to address the pressing issue of damaged roads," said civic activist Dayanand Krishnan. PALERMO, Calif. (AP) — Two children were wounded in a shooting Wednesday at a small religious K-8 school in Northern California and the shooter died from a suspected self-inflicted gunshot, sheriff’s officials said. The children’s conditions were not immediately known. The shooting occurred Wednesday afternoon at the Feather River School of Seventh-Day Adventists, a private, K-8 school in Palermo, a community of 5,500 people about 65 miles (104 km) north of Sacramento. Butte County Sheriff Kory L. Honea said the 911 calls reported “an individual on campus who had fired shots at students,” and said that the shooter did not appear to have a connection to the school. The motive was not immediately known, he continued. One student was flown to a nearby hospital, Honea said. Authorities rushed students to the Oroville Church of the Nazarene to be reunited with their families, the sheriff’s office said. The school has been open since 1965 and caters to fewer than three dozen children, according to its website.
