The gangsters attacked Tuesday evening in the town of Petite-Riviere in central Haiti, Bertide Horace, a spokeswoman for a community association in the surrounding Artibonite region, told AFP. Two of the fatalities were adolescents and the attackers kidnapped an undisclosed number of people and set fire to houses, Horace said, adding: "We counted nine bodies." Video footage of the bodies circulated on social media, as the attack angered residents of the town. The assault was seen as revenge by gangsters against locals who had helped officers retake control of a police headquarters, she added. Haiti's powerful gangs control most of the capital city Port-au-Prince and commit random acts of kidnapping, rape and other extreme violence despite the deployment of a Kenyan-led force that is trying to help the outgunned local police restore some semblance of order. Over the weekend, nearly 200 people were killed in Port-au-Prince as a gang leader convinced that his son's illness stemmed from a voodoo spell attacked followers of the religion, according to an organization called the Committee for Peace and Development. The United Nations put the death toll at 184, including 127 elderly men and women. Around 5,000 people have died in the country's unrest this year, according to the United Nations. Haiti has suffered from decades of instability, but the situation escalated in February when gangs launched coordinated attacks in the capital to overthrow then-prime minister Ariel Henry. The medical charity Doctors without Borders (MSF) said Wednesday it would partially resume its activities in Port-au-Prince, less than a month after suspending its operations over threats to its staff. The United States meanwhile announced extended restrictions on US flights to Haiti, with the Federal Aviation Administration set to ban planes from operating under 10,000 feet around capital Port-au-Prince. The regulator had previously banned flights to Haiti after gangs shot at planes, but had eased restrictions on November 20. The new regulation goes into effect Thursday. jds/dw/mlm/des/jgcJudge rejects request to sideline SJSU volleyball player

Plans Required to Cover Treatment for SOD1-ALS ARLINGTON, Va. , Dec. 11, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has announced a first-of-its-kind directive requiring Medicare Advantage plans to approve coverage for Qalsody, a treatment for people living with genetic SOD1-ALS. This decision reflects the ALS Association's commitment to ensuring that people living with ALS have access to promising ALS treatments without delay. "This is a victory for the entire ALS community," said Calaneet Balas, president and CEO of the ALS Association. "It's critical that FDA-approved treatments are made accessible rather than being labeled as 'experimental.' We are grateful to everyone in our community who helped make this day happen." Balas added: "We hope this sends a message to the entire rare disease community and pharmaceutical industry that new treatments can be developed and made accessible to those who will benefit from them. We need to ensure more ALS treatments are developed and approved that will help everyone living with ALS." The ALS Association played a key role in the historic CMS directive by participating and advocating for the research, approval, and accessibility of Qalsody for people living with ALS. In 2004, the ALS Association was the first to fund research into ALS-specific antisense oligonucleotide (ASO) technology, investing over $1.3 million in groundbreaking studies that laid the foundation for the development of Qalsody. This early commitment supported preclinical studies, safety trials, and the first-in-human phase 1 trial, which established SOD1 as a viable therapeutic target. In 2023, Qalsody became the first gene-based therapy approved for ALS , thanks in part to the ALS Association's efforts, including a united push from the ALS community for FDA accelerated approval. This new CMS directive provides precedent for state regulators to issue similar actions for other private insurers. According to the Valor study published in 2022 , Qalsody, which was developed specifically to target the RNA produced by mutated SOD1 genes, has demonstrated significant promise in clinical trials and real-world studies. In the phase 3 VALOR trial, Qalsody reduced levels of mutated SOD1 proteins in cerebral spinal fluid by 35% within eight weeks and decreased bloodstream levels of neurofilament light chain (NfL)—a key biomarker of neurodegeneration—by 50% within 12-16 weeks. These biological changes translated into measurable clinical benefits, including slower disease progression, improved respiratory function, and enhanced quality of life after 52 weeks of treatment. Real-world data has since validated these findings, with some patients stabilizing or even experiencing improvements in motor function and quality of life. When insurance companies began denying access to Qalsody, labeling it as "experimental," the ALS Association took decisive action, working directly with CMS to launch an investigation into these unjust denials. By presenting evidence of widespread insurance rejections and demonstrating the critical need for immediate intervention. In addition to working with CMS, the ALS Association actively engaged policymakers, held strategic meetings with state and federal legislators, and served as a staunch advocate for patients, ensuring their voices were heard and their rights to life-changing treatment were upheld. The ALS Association urges anyone previously denied Qalsody by their Medicare Advantage plan to contact their ALS specialist immediately to begin the process of securing access to this critical treatment. For more information on the CMS directive visit als.org About the ALS Association The ALS Association is the largest ALS organization in the world. The ALS Association funds global research collaborations, assists people with ALS and their families through its nationwide network of care and certified clinical care centers, and advocates for better public policies for people with ALS. The ALS Association is working to make ALS a livable disease while urgently searching for new treatments and a cure. For more information about the ALS Association, visit our website at www.als.org . About ALS Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. Over the course of the disease, people lose the ability to move, to speak, and eventually, to breathe. The disease is always fatal, usually within five years of diagnosis. Few treatment options exist, resulting in a high unmet need for new therapies to address functional deficits and disease progression. If a cordless vacuum comes to mind, then you’re in for a wonderful surprise. The Black+Decker PowerSeries+ Cordless Vacuum is marked down to $92, which is its lowest price in history, according to Amazon price tracker camelcamelcamel — meaning this is a bonafide Black Friday deal. It’s also backed by thousands of rave reviews from people who even compare it to more expensive brands. It features auto-sense technology that changes the suction power for you as it navigates between different surfaces. The anti-tangle brush roller digs deep into carpets and rugs to grab hair, dirt, and debris you probably didn’t even know was there. LED lights on the front swivel head also make it easy to spot things that might have been missed otherwise. Related: Amazon is selling a $50 compact space heater for only $30, and shoppers call it a 'game changer' This all-in-one machine converts into a handheld Dustbuster and has a crevice tool attachment, making it easy to clean hard-to-reach areas like stairs, baseboards, furniture, and even car interiors. The filter itself should be washed at least once every three months to ensure it’s working properly. Over 5,000 people have given this vacuum a five-star rating, and several call it the “best” they’ve owned. “I have three dogs and two cats, which are in and out of my house all day long...[and] sweeping just wasn't enough,” one reviewer wrote . “It's been the best purchase so far and I use this every day! I never would have thought how much this vacuum pulls from the floors. The light helps with seeing where all the white fur is and you actually notice the difference where you have vacuumed and not.” Ensure you're prepared for holiday cleaning with an upgraded cordless vacuum that’s able to deliver great results without spending a ton of money. The fact that the Black+Decker PowerSeries+ Vacuum is on sale for $92 during Black Friday is a major steal.
Abang Johari (seated centre) speaks to the media at the press conference at Quadruplex Taman Ceria, Miri. MIRI (Nov 30): Sarawak is set to become the “Battery of Asia” by 2035 after all of its energy resource hub are completed by 2035, said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. He outlined the current development of Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) power plants in Miri and Kuching, each capable of generating 500 MW of energy, with a third one in the pipeline in Bintulu, collectively producing a total of 1,500 MW. “My target, by 2030 we will reach 10 GW (gigawatts overall). We can supply this (excess energy) to other areas including our neighbours (Asia states). For 2035, the target is 15 GW. This is only gas energy, not to mention solar. Solar energy will generate more than that. “That’s why Sarawak will be the ‘Battery of Asia’. If we don’t have it (energy), then they (Asia) will not ‘switch on’,” he said at a press conference today, adding that Sarawak will help Asian countries by supplying and exporting electricity. He added that this will provide income for Sarawak, adding that the energy mix technology is also Sarawak’s vision for the future. “Our energy is sustainable energy, meaning we will not produce carbon. It is a combination of hydrogen and steam, and with this, hydrogen energy can be increased,” he said. Currently, he said, hydrogen production from Sarawak’s energy hub stands at 30 per cent, with the potential to increase to 50–70 per cent in the future. This is possible because the technology used in these energy projects is cutting-edge, developed by Mitsubishi Japan, he added. “Thus, Sarawak is the first in the region to use the technology.” “In our region (Southeast Asia) maybe Sarawak is the first to use this combined circle energy. Indonesia does not have it yet, there is none in Peninsular Malaysia, and the countries up north, namely Laos, Thailand also does not have it yet. We are the first. “So, our electricity will have a low carbon footprint, our energy is sustainable,” he said. Also present at the press conference were Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Prof Dr Sim Hui Kian; Sarawak Transport Minister Dato’ Sri Lee Kim Shin and Petros Non-Executive Chairman Tan Sri Datuk Amar Hamid Bugo as well as state Cabinet ministers. Earlier, Abang Johari made a visit to personally inspect the implementation of Petros community gas infrastructure project in the Quadruplex Taman Ceria housing area in Permyjaya, here.Looking for something to do this summer and love being out in nature? or signup to continue reading Well, right on Bendigo's doorstep is the iconic Lake Eppalock which dozens of families have utilised as their ideal boating and fishing spot this summer holiday. The Company attributed its results and lowered guidance to "demand ... ramp[ing] more slowly than we originally anticipated" as "EV customers revise their launch time lines as the market works though this transition period." Investors and analysts reacted immediately to Wolfspeed's revelation. The price of Wolfspeed's common stock declined dramatically. From a closing market price of $13.71 per share on November 6, 2024, Wolfspeed's stock price fell to $8.33 per share on November 7, 2024, a decline of about 39.24% in the span of just a single day.
