Protected personal information of more than 1 million people — including about 4,700 Social Security numbers — was accessed from Illinois Department of Human Services files in April, the agency confirmed last week. State agencies are required under the Illinois Personal Information Protection Act to notify the news media of certain reportable breaches of security. In a statement, the Illinois Department of Human Services said it experienced a privacy breach on April 25 when a phishing campaign was used to access a number of employee accounts and the files associated with the accounts. Phishing involves sending seemingly legitimate requests for personal or sensitive information such as passwords or account numbers. IDHS said the files that were accessed included Social Security numbers for 4,704 people. In addition, public assistance account information was accessed for more than 1.1 million people. While that information did not include Social Security numbers, it did have names, public assistance account numbers and some combination of addresses, birthdate, Illinois State Board of Education Student Information System identification numbers and cellphone numbers. "Upon learning of the phishing incident, IDHS worked in partnership with the Illinois Department of Innovation and Technology to investigate the extent of the breach and to determine which individuals were included," according to the statement. "This was an in-depth forensic analysis, followed by a manual review of all compromised files to determine the nature of the breach. IDHS continues to train its employees on how to avoid and report phishing attempts." Written notices were sent to those whose Social Security numbers were involved and whose current address was on file. He said they expected to retain two to three seats out of the 12 they had won in the 2020 election on the back of a worldwide “Green wave”. “Undoubtedly it’s a disappointing result for our party today,” Mr O’Gorman told reporters in Ongar, Dublin. “It’s hard for a smaller party in government, that’s long been the tradition, the history in Ireland. We hoped going into the election to buck that but we haven’t been able to buck that today.” Mr O’Gorman, a candidate in Dublin West, is among the outgoing Green Party TDs in a battle to retain their seats. Culture Minister Catherine Martin, who is fighting to remain a Green Party TD for Dublin Rathdown, said it was a “very tight” race in her four-seat constituency. “We go in (to government) not afraid of that because the issue of the climate and biodiversity crisis is (greater) than our survival,” she said on RTE Radio. “I stand over and am proud of our track record of delivery.” Green candidate in Waterford Marc O Cathasaigh said he would not be “in the shake-up” to retain his seat in that constituency, while junior minister Ossian Smyth looks at risk of losing his seat in Dun Laoghaire. Junior minister Joe O’Brien is expected to lose his seat in Dublin Fingal, Neasa Hourigan is at risk in Dublin Central, while Wicklow’s Steven Matthews garnered just 4% of first preferences. Former Green Party leader Eamon Ryan, who announced his retirement from frontline politics in June, said his party had not had a good day. Arriving at the count centre at the RDS in Dublin, the outgoing environment minister told reporters: “If you don’t get elected you accept that, but you come back stronger and you learn lessons, and we’ve done that in the past and we will do that again.” He added: “No matter what the results today there will be a strong Green Party in Ireland, we have deep roots in the community and it’s a very distinct political philosophy and I think there is still space for that in Irish politics, for sure.” Mr Ryan said he did not believe his decision to retire, and the timing of his announcement, had affected the party’s showing. “Unfortunately – and this is just one of those days – we didn’t get the number of votes,” he said. HEBRON, Ky. — Standing just a few hundred feet from the thunderous roar of an airliner touching down are two members of a critical airport team you've likely never heard of. Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport's operations team ensures the facility is safe and ready for everyone from airlines to food vendors to cargo shippers. What falls under the team’s purview is a wide-ranging list, said Casey Kinosz, CVG’s Airport Operations Director. "Our team does everything from ‘Is there something we need to correct out in the airfield immediately?’ to ‘Does the chair look nice that you’re sitting in?’" Kinosz said. In a room beneath travelers in the concourse, members of the operations team are surrounded by screens. "All the aircraft and vehicles that are out on the airfield will show up on that map," Kinosz said, explaining the intricate monitoring system that gives the teams eyes and ears in the windowless room. More than 800 cameras show everything from the taxi lanes to baggage claim. “The team, just by their daily duties, can be watching that camera scroll and see if something irregular pops up,” Kinosz said. But the team’s office goes far beyond one room. Safety is always their top priority. The airfield is inspected at least twice a day, a routine that ensures all signs, lights and pavement markings are in optimal condition. "The signage system can be complex for somebody who's not familiar," said senior manager Brian Barnott. During times of low visibility, members of the airport ops team will escort pilots unfamiliar with CVG. Technology becomes even more instrumental in maintaining flight operations during the winter months. The team deploys a friction tester truck to measure runway slickness and coordinates with a fleet to clear the runway during inclement weather. Plus, small pucks in the pavement help determine surface temperature. Other weather equipment helps determine how far away lightning may be from the airfield. While they remain out of sight for many passengers, the operations team gets busier and busier as the airport grows. CVG is now the sixth largest cargo hub in North America and welcomed 8.7 million passengers in 2023. Those working in airport ops don’t need an aviation background, Barnott said: “If you have a good personality and fit in with the organization, airport operations can come second nature to most folks."
